Role of respiratory infections of the nose in rhetim- atic fever in children POL.ARCILAIED.WEWNET. 1954, 24/3a (423-433) infection of the nuse and its sinuses is the most important factor in the actiology of rheumatic fever and its relapses. Tonsillites have their origin'illost frequently In infections of the nose which by the way of bacteraemia lead to dissemination of the causative organisms to the tonsils. The majority of 100 patients showed signs of rhinitis, enlargement of the cervical lymphatic glands und radiological lesions of the accessory sinuses of the nose. In several cases. in which a high sedimedt- ation rate still remained in spite of the treatment, there was a persistent blockade of maxillary sinuses. In one case rheumatic fever appeared as a sequel of tonsil- lectorny. in 4 cases the relapses persisted although the children were submitted before to tonsillectomy. Chronic infection of the nose. which was ascertained in those cases, had undoubtedly existed already before. while after the tonsil- lectomy it was still an aetiological factor of rheumatic fever. In conclusions the authors express the opinion. that the most important factor in the campaign against rheumatic fever is to be found in the prophylaxis against the infections of the nose and in the treatment of the inflammatory state of sinuses. LEK, 1955, 10/28 (02S.928) Graphs 2 Tables 1 Good results were obtained in 8 out of 10 cases. In the remaining 2 cases the administration of ACTII was abandoned; in I case due to the increasing oedema. in the second (nephrotic glomerulonephritis) due to the increase of the urea level, Out of 8 cases. In which a beneficial result of the ACTH treatment has been ob- tained, there was a permanent Improvement lasting I year or longer in 3 childre.% even with absence of pathological symptoms. In the remain,ng cases. however. relapses occur aftstr a longer or a shorter period of time and they pass gradually into chronic glomerulonephritio, A good result may be observed as well In tht to. 1 called 'pure nephrosts' as In the nephrotic glomeruiotiephritio. The daily dolt to ACTH a mg. per kg. for not more than 2 days. If the effect of the ACTH is not observed during this time Its application ought to be abandoned. A negative re f. oponle of one cure does not mean the same for tile following ones. A good result 1,2 obtained by the simultaneous application of the I. v, infusion of plasma or the tr&nsfusion of blood. The observed increase of the filtration rate due to the treat- ment with ACTII indicates the part played by the impaired function of the glonle- rolus. The observation that after some years the symptoms of a chronte glomerulo- pephritle appear leads to the supposition that so-called pure nephrosis iR nothing else than a passing period in the development of chronic glomerulonephritts. A chromatographic method is described. '3-5 .9 pf the substance are disoolved in 15 ml hexene (I) (obtained-by dehydrating hexyl alcohol in*vapor phase over activated Al 0 ) and the solution is transferred to a column 500-600mm 2 3 long and 10-12 mm in diameter and filled with 25~-30 9 of ACII(ASK) silica gel (61-120 mash). The column is eluted with 10 ml f and then with 60-70 ml C2H 5OH. All the HC is contained in the first 20 ml of the eluate. This fraction ot the eluate is transferred to a,calibrated flask and most of the I is distilled off with a dephlegmator at-'a water-bath temperature Card 1/2 S/bBl/62/000/023/027/120 Determinating the eaturated'ses B150180 0 of 75-95 C; On cooling, thdIflask is weighed and the combined weight of HC and residual I determined'. The contents of the*flask are dissolved in 20-30 ml octanef transferred to a 100 ml measuring flask, the solution being made up to the mark with octane# and I is determined bromatometrically (the value of I is checked in.a. control teat). The HC content is calculated from the difference. The determination error is t0.1-0.9% (absolute). [Abstracter's note: Complete tranalhtion .1 IMMII-I'm6ii-w! M. PROTOMKO, H. I,!_! BALUXOTA, A.A. In all cases investigated there was an increase in strength properties\~fter thermo-mechanical treatment and in some cases (mainly in melts with higher carbon contents) , there was also an increase In plasticity. The relative maximum rise in the ultimate strength for given carbon content was measured in melts smelted in the air, while the relative minimum value, was measured on melts smelted in vacuum from highly pure raw meterial. This finding was explained by the so-called dynamic effects of martensite plates.-on the boundaries of austenite grains. It is most likely Card ........... ........ T. P110i-66 ACC NR: AP6008679 0 that in melts smelted from highly pure material (low P and S), a reinforce- ment of the austenite grain boundaries takes place to a certain extent and, evidently, the possibility of defect formation on the boundaries of austenite grains under the impact effect of martensite plates decreasea. In these melts, the probability of relaxation of stresses caused by the dynamic effects of martensite plates on the austenite grain boundaries was increased. Further, it was shown that it is very difficult to clarify the observed phenomena by the action of carbide precipitation or by nucleation of carbides .~n the course of thermo-mechat-iical treatment. The eyelids were ligatured open, and the rest of the body area was shielded. Examinations of the eyes were con- ducted with a -lit lamp before and after irradiation, and lens opacity was photo- praphed. It was found that the surface temperature of the eve tncreased t,v 2-5C, depending upon irradiation duration, The results of Irradiation were photophobir, hvperemia, chemosis of the conjuctiva, dullnei;s of the cornea, and pupil con- traction (2-b vn). One to four davs atter irradiation, signs of hyperemia and chemosis had modified, and the cornea 1,ad become clear. 11hotophobia and hyperemia persisted for 3-30 days. While 9 of the 26 rabbits showed aggravated lens L Card uDc: 617.7-061.22-092.9 AC" Nk opacities due to congenital defects, ne new opacities were induced by microwave irradiation; of these 9 cases, 3 -)rDcesses uf opacity aggravation occurred 5 -7 days after the first irradiation while the remaining 6 aggravations took place after subsequent irradintlons. Thus, the aggravntion of lens opacity occurred only when there were congenital defects. it mot ommonlv took place when pupil contraction was intense, hyperemia and chemosis oczurred, and when the increase in ocular surface temperature was greater than normal. A feature of the 9 ob- served cases of opacity aggravation wa.~ that the process was teversed' 14 -21 daya after the last irradiation. The mechai)Ism of the aggravation of lens opacity is ur.~uiown, hut it is speculated that temForarily disrupted enzVMe activity is responsible.
