Charges in this ratio depend on seasonal factors and geographic positions. The article quotes from N.N. Kalitin who conducted observations at 17 Russian stations, the lo- cations of which are given. TITLE: Direct Radiation at Karadag (Pryamaya radiatsiya v Karadage) PERIODICAL: Trudy Glavnoy geofizicheskoy observatorii 1957, Nr 68, pp. 184-194 (USSR) ABSTRACT: Thils'~s a report on observations conducted during the last 15 years at Karadag on the Black Sea on the amount of direct radiation in that region. A comparison is drawn between data obtained there and data received from other Russian observatories. These data include the intensity of direct *radiation and its daily and monthly amounts. The amount of direct radiation is determined by the duration of solar radiation and a formula is given on how to cal- culate this duration. The conclusion is that the total amount of direct radiation at Karadag is 30' percent less than at Tashkent although it is generally higher than elsewhere in Russia. Volkov, PURPOSE: This book is intended for meteorologists, agronomists, work-ors on collective farms, and the interested layman. COVERAGE: This book provides a climatic description of the Kazakh "Melkosopochnik" (hummocky region). It lists the results of studies Card 1/8 Microclimate of the Northern Part (Cont.) SOV/188U made on the microclimate of the region. Individual chapters deal with the physical phenomena underlying and shaping the jiLicroclimatic features, and the effect the latter have upon the region's agri- culture. The work was prepared by members of the GGO and the KazNIGMI. A map on the recurrence of drought was drawn up by Doctor of Agricultural Sciences A.M. Alpatlyev and scientific worker A.I. Trofimova of the Vsesoyuzny-.y institut rasteniyevodstva. Ye.I. Kuznetsova worked on data dealing with the temperature of the active slopes of Li Pkhill En and the changes in prevailing air currents brought about under the influence of relief. The chart showing the amount of precipitation during the warm period of the year was drawn up by L.P. Kuznetsova under the direction of Doctor of Geo- grahpical Sciences O.A. Drozdov (GGO), There are 89 references of which 81 are Soviet, 6 German, 1 French, and 1 English. TABLE OF CONTE14TS: Foreword 3 Card 2/8 Microclimate of the Northern Part (Cont.) SOV/1886 Ch. I. The measurements were made in the summer of 1962 in Voyeykovo. The fast- response compensation thermoelement used in making the measurements is described in detail. Temperature readings could be taken within an accuracy of 0.10, an 'd inter-;- polation could be used in the case of a linear temperature variation for accuracy to,. 0.010. The method used for calibration of the instrument is described. The resulti, of the measurements are presented In graphic fomr. Theoretical computations of the u-Dwelling radiation were carried out with Shekhter's diagram. The ground temperature was taken as the temperature of the grass- I Surface, which is a little lower in the daytime and a little higher at night than the :temperature of barren soil. The upwelling radiation flux in a cloudless sky in the !troposphere may be expressed by an exponential function, depending upon the tempera-~,____ iture differences.
