maintaining the load voltage at a prescriLed level. It Is (ion, onstrated theoretically that the
classical methods of the stabilization of such devices make It possible to solve the stabilk-ation
problem, but that these methods have oubstantial shortcoriings (an Increase in machine size,
the util ization of additional devices, redu -,eld reliability). The author poses the problem of
finding a new device, incorporated into the machine, whIc'.,i does not increase Its dimensions
and which carries out all the functions he:-etofore carried out by three devices (voltage trans-
former, amplifier, and flexible feedback 'winding). It Is shown that the problem Is solved by
means of one winding. In addition to the physical exposition of the function of the winding, theL

To produce pulses of the magnetomotive force, the amplidyne utilizes
a high sensitivity balancing magnetic system. The soiution of vari-

In tae course of this work, which wits carried out with the reactor of the
RPT (?) the spatial distribution of the density of 1,4 neutrons was measured
by means of an indium detector. These neutrons were produced by slowing down
the fission neutrons emitted by a "punctiform" scurc,3 in uranium water
lattices. The lattices consisted of blocks of natural uranium with a diametez
of 35 mm and aluminium casings, and were housed In a vessel of 140x100x105 CID.
A target convertor of U 235 oxide-protoxide (4,15 g uranium) was used as a scarce
of fission neutrons. As to meaaurir~g methods see L.M.BARKOV et.al, Atomnaja
Energija, 1, No 3, 31 (1956). For the purpose of neutral12ing the thermal neu-
troas the 7Tranium blocks were enclosed In cadmium foil tubes of 0,6 mm thick-
ness, and these tubes were arranged in form of a:,,i equilateral triangulF-r
lattice spaced 401 5,0 and 0,6 cm. The ratio (vDlume of water / volume of
uranium) is variable from 0,4 to 2,0.
Preliminary experiments with a source imitating the spectrum of the fission
neutrons gave the following results: 1.) In a plane pas3ing horizontally
through the source the density q(r) of the slowed down neutrons Is isotropic
with respect to the direction towerds the sourc(!. 2.) The distribution of
q(r) in the h;rizontal plane does not change in tho case of a cadmium tube

tion with a bundle of thermal neutrons). 3.) The boundary effect ie of no
influence up to horizontal or vertical distances of from 5 to 10 cm.
The principal measurements were carried out with a convertor for 3 lattices
with 4,31 5,0 and 6,0 cm spacing (ratio volume of water / uranium volume
0,4; 1,0 and 2,0), and results are shown in a diagram. 7.ithin the lim:A of
measuring errors the distribution (if Q(r) is iso-:ropic, and -t eksp can be
computed by means of the usual forriula. Next, tho~ determination of i is
discussed for systems where there -s no increase by super-cadmium neutrons.
By means of the method described the coefficient -r 0 of a system, in which
not only the increase of thermal but also that of supercadmium, neutrons is
lacking, was estimated. The values of T which were found include the effect
of the slowing down of the neutron:j produced in the blocks by the fissionine,
Of a238 by fast neutrons. The values of -r 1,46 eVI '1 0,025 .. and M2, which
were measured by various authors, do not agree well with one another. Thus,
direct measurements with a method similar to the one described resulted in
considerably higher values of x than those carried out by the author.
