ABSTRACT: The Ministry of Non-ferrous Metec, llurgy of the U.S.S.R. is
engaged on an extensivo programme for the development and
introduction of the stage process for the beneficiation of
ores. This process has been appliod in the Ural region to
copper-, lead-, zinc ores. The adoption of tiiis scheme
required the development of new caaditions for grinding and
classification of a method for treating the intermediate pro-
ducts and reaction conditions which, would enable the maximum
b,anefit to be obtained. from the new technolojzZr. The solutions
arrived at have onablod the de-leading and de-coppexing of
zinc concentrates to be achieved on an industrial scale; the
technology for the production of pyritic concentrates has been
developed simultaneously.
The now technology has been successfully applied a-u the
Zolotushinsk Beneficiation Plant, whaiv the extractioa of
metals has increased, compared with that obtained -_'n January
uo April, 1956, as follows: lead into lead conciantrate by

Zinc concentration La iiinc concentrate has increased by 2-3~7'*
These results have been obtained by the extensive application
of fine grinding and the use of hyd.ro-cyclones, the introduction
of inter-staEe flotation of lead wid copper minerals v.-ith stage
depression of zinc.,.a12"&,Js. Hyd:~o-cy clones and flotation
was the basis of the scheme by whi(.1h pyritic concentrates were
successfully obtained from Dlant waste. In view of the
successes obtained vdth the new te--hriology, its application
to other poly-metallic ores is recommended.
Flow sheets for the processes described are given in this

ABSTRACT: The authors describe the staged concentration of complex
copper-lead-zinc ores at the Zolotushinsk Beneficiation Works.
The practice was developod by works rersonnel in C103e co-
operation with the Uralmekhanobr Institute. Primary sulphidee
represent the greater pa:?t of the ore and consist of sphalerite,
ch~alcopyrite and galenit~-; in addit-f-on to secondary sulphides
and oxidised minerals, tne ore contains soluble copper, Zinc
and iron salts, as well ao sr.,:all quantities of other raterials.
The dissemination of the sulphide miaerals is non-uniform; -,.he
main losses of copper ard lead in the zinc concentrates when the
ore is ground to 90% - 74 ii occur as concretions. T-he staged

concentrate with 20-2016 Pb (recovery 60-'/Q%o), 10-14% Cu
(recovery 40-50'A')') and '~--10% Zn (loss under G-% of content in the
ore); this is follovied by a second--s-,-,age in which h~~drocyclones
and spiral clasi3ifiers are used. The characteristicE, of the tto

show 1he flow Sheet of ;he, staged process as used since
May 15, 1956 and tabulate comparaij 've data on thiE and on
the previously used selective-flotation scber.e (Tables 1 and
2). Besides 1-Mering the metal contents of the tailinr~s,
the adoption of the new scheme (with appropriate plant and
organisational chanE;es) is said to bave' led to a 'r%j in-crease
in the weight of ore trnated per unit time witli a 35% decrease
in costs per ton of ore. An editorial note points out, thfit
the higher lead recovery and decreased lead and coppel., losses
in the tailini5s have 'Jaken place on account of the deterior-
ation of the 'Lead con,,,entrate.

ABSTRACT: The structure of Sicily is determined by autochthonous
rigid masses distributed about the periphery of the
island (Miocene-Upper Cretaceous limestones, meta-
morphosed Paleozoics of the Pelor:Ltart Mountains, the
prominences o:',' Mesozoic and Cenozoic limeatones and

The basin is filled with be6s of friable sediments (2D00 m thick),
consisting of normal sedimentary sands and allochthonous chaotic
clay masses with erratic blacks of limestone, sandstone and igneous
rocks, ideposited there by torrents and by landslides. Lome of the
lands des were submarine. Among the clay masses a. distinction is
made between clay breccias and clay tectonites of z;urface origin.
The stratigrarphy of the upper beds filling the basin has been de-
ciphered from drill holes. 1.) Clay breccias occur from the upper
Pliocene down 'to the Triass;.c and contain plastic a.nd rigid erratic
components. 2) The Astiart series is represented by calcareous sand-
stones. 3) Plaisancian rocks are sandy clays. 4) Thero are clay
breccias with leases of white marls containing globigerina of lower
Pliocene age. 5) A gypseout;-sulfurous formation with stony and
potassic layers belongs to the Sarmatian. 6) There are also clay
breccias in the Sarmatian. 7) A unit of clay breceias and clay
tectonites, with marls arid (-,onglomerates, is of Tortonian age. 8)
Another zone of clay breccias is either of Tortonian or pre-

ABSTRACT: New concepts are ia~roduced which characterize shear
xotio n. Thed qUat ions cir inoticn are derived for systems con-
sisting of material points and for a body with a contlau-
ous didtribution of 'matter ThebErms introduced here
for the shear motion show a formal similarity totbe terms
relating to rotary movoment but aret not derived froxu
those. The justificat:.on for introducing the given
new terms was proved dtLrJ-ng the study of she&r oscillations
relative to a plane. The shear oscillations relative to a
-swfaw can be described by theact nev terms only as long as
they occur sufficientlY netu/&B if the shear surface can be
substituted by a plane. There are 1 figure and. I Czech
