One of these phases, the rich one in S102, producce
the skeleton of the future porcus glass, and the
other, in which B203 and NagO prevailt is soluble
in mineral acids; tEe dissolution rate is about I
(of the thickness) per 8 hours. Glass treated with
acids possesses minute co-inicating pores, dimen-
sions of which are 30 to 50 A; its specific surface
is 200 sq.m per cub.cm. Such a poroui3 glass lets
water through (0.001 ml per sq. cm x hour under 1
atm pressure), its absorption of air moisture is
25% and it can be used for making bacteriological,
monochromatic and catalytic filters. If the porous

resist!vity - a little less than that of fused q7,mrtz,
high acid and alkali resistivity, As far as its Iro-
perties are concerned, "Vycor" glass is but little
inferior to funed SiO2 and its produ..,tion is easier
and cheaper. Prcduction of tubea and little crucibles
with W&118 UP to 3 Em thick of that glass was started
in Czechoslovakia.
