Abstract :The molecular weight, heterodisper3ion, and the 1.6 to 1.4
glycoside bond ratio were investigated in samples of acid-
hydrolysed dextran, a plasna substitute oJ7 0.16-0.21 vis-
cosity. The following restLlts were obtained: 1) A laboratory
process for dextran fractionation was developed; 2) The
molecular weigbt of split and fractionated dextrans was

its various fractions was found by neans of determining their
diffusion and by ultracentrifuging; it was established that
acid-split, non-fractionatxid dextrans with a 0,16-0.21 true,
viscosity are highly haterodispersed; In order that the
dextrans tie used as plasma substitutes, very low and very
high molecular weight fractions must be e"-iminated by
mans of vingle-stage or mUti-stage fractionation; 4)
It was established that the plycoside bonds of the inves-
t1gated samples are 1.6-t3rpe bonds in 85% of split or
fractionnted dextrans, in '73% of unsplit lextrans, and in 91%
of the hydrolysed dextrans.
