Thermally induced luminescence, thermally induced discoloration, photo-induced luminescence, thermally induced electron emission, and photo-induced electron emission were measured using a relaxation "combine" designed by the authors espically for this investigation. The data obtained contribute to an understanding 1/2 L 01927-67 ACC NR, AP6030948 of the thermal degradation of electron color centers. The authors thank Ch. B. S. TITLE: Interpretation of the Evershod Effect SOURCE: Astronomichaskly zhurnals, ve 41, noo 1, 1964, 80-86 TOPIC TAGS: Sun, sunspot, Evershad e!fect, photosphere, Stellcr atmosphere, atmotphere ABSTRACT: The author notes that the investigations of St. Johe ond Evershed have e5tablished that, on the photospher,s ';avois, there Is an outflcm, of matter frcm this Spot, but that an explanation of this tystematic character of these movements on- counters ciansiderable difficulties. j',ttwVts at such an explanaJon require a pre- liminary assignment of a spot model's ithat Is, a definite hypothesis concerning the physical nature of sunspots, and thris latter Is an as yet unsolv4d problem of the physics of the Sun. This statement serves as on Introduction to a discuss3on of the view of R. Michard (R. Michards, Ann.. i1strophys., 16, no. 4. 21-,?, :1953). It Is claimed that the sunspot model propoued Independently by the awthor (V. S.. Berdichevskaya, Astron. zhurnai j5p,:;o. 5, 1958) and W. Mattill (W. Mattig "Olz Astrophys.'"44, 280, 1958) In 135 is ads to the representation of alldens ;Potl, in which the optical thicknosi Jncrowsios more rapidly with depth as conipariml with Card 'ACCESSION NR:-AP4017616 InstItut Imo V*Vi, Kuybyk.sIveve the photosphere. In the previous model, proposed by Michard, thes spoi; Is considered as a very extended, optica.Ily transparent tubeo Tht%author discusses the difficul-. .ties associated with such a representation. On the basis of Matti.;Is model, the Evershed effect Is considered as the oufflow of matter under the Influence of the t horizontal pressure gradient between this sunspot and photosphere. The me an velo- cities of the outflow from the spot *re computed for different depiths. Th" Increas In outflow velocity with depth, which It; 4talned, Is shown to correspond with St. John's scheme repres-enting the distribution of the Evershed outflost velocities as al function of height. A corresponding coinputation -Is made for outflow velocities In the spot region f rom sub-photospheric Niyers. The twdel adopted by the autKDr per- mits an explanation of the "blackness" itind low teWoratures of the sp)t. it Is noted, however, that remaining unexplairied In the suppositions adopted concerning the nature of the Evershed effect Is tht.-, question of the mechanism of the lifting motions and the mechanism governing the formation oil the magnetic I'leld, within which occurs that condensation of matter which Is rimponsible for the great optical thickness in the spot. It Is also obsierved th'at the hypothesis of a spiral struc- ture for the magnetic field, while elUminating many difficulties, requires spocial study. TITLE: Some Derivatives of Mercaptocaffeine and Me.~captotheo- bromine (Hekotcryye proizvodxiyye merkaptokofeina, i morkaptoteobromina) PERIODIC,U: Zhurnal Obshchey Khimii,. 1956, Vol. 26, fir pp. 689-692 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The importance of sulfohydry1compounds in physiological p:rocesses is the object of ccoprehonsive ix;estigations. Therefore the mercapto derivatives of caff-aine and theobromine are of special interest to scientists, B: ?:iLsc'laer (ref. 2) had patented the synthesis of 6--mercaptoca:f'-feine, obtained b:i the reaction of 6-chlorocaffeine with potasaium, hydro- sulfide. On the synthesis of 8-mercaptotheobronine nothing hits been published, that of 8-mercaptotheophyl:Ane was, however, described in a patent (ref. 3). KlIftle,.-ski.y and Eiihman synthetized thiocompounds of theobromino sixilar in structure. The authors carried out the synthesis of Card 1/3 8--mercaptocaffeine (I) 'n omehow changed conditions starting Some Derivatives of Mercaptocaffeine and Mercaptutheobrontre 19-,"a",, -28/61 from 8-bromocaffeine and the sodiumhydros,-lCide diS3C-lved in alcohol. Analogot.sly also the 8-mercaptothe:)bromire (II) was produced. The soetium salts soluble in water (merca.ptides) of the mercaptocaffeine and the mercaptotheobromine can pharm&-,ologically be compared to caffeine and thecbromine and can be used only in place of the soluble preparations of caffeine and theobromine: Of practical interest is the sub- stitution of diuretine by mercaptotheobromine; as the high basicity of the former brings about its carbonization and decreases its solubility in water. As mercaptanes are subject to oxidation the sulfohydrylgro-ap must be protected against ,any reactions in order to increase the reoistivity of the preparations. Some derivatives of mercaptocaffeine and inercaptotheobromine were synthetized by substituting the Aydrogen by the sulfohydrylgroup, this with a view to the fact that sulfides and disulfiles can be converted in the Drganism to compounds with fre-3 sulfohydrylgroups. The Jisulfidea were of little pharmac-ological interest because of their insolubility in water. 8 derivatives of mercaptopurine Card 2/3 'Nore eynthatized, 6 of which wore described for the first time. Some Derivatives of Mercaptocal'feine and Mercaptothoobromine 79-23-7-28/61 Phere are 4 references, 3 of which are Sairiet.
