increasing the
accuracy of tempernture measurements (luring t, cutting

The author cliscusses in this connection tlio principal methods
of fasteninff thermocouples to a body whose teriperature is to
be
neasured. It., is shown that the value of the temperature
measured
depends on the force of pressing at the thermocouple junction,
the type of fl,ermocouple and the. material of the heated body,
i.e. the conventional metbod produces errors which are
difficult
to eliminate. Tho influence of the force of pressing the therm-
ocouple junction to the heated body was investirrated on a de-
vice, shoini in Fig 1. A GNEP pyrometric voltmeter was used for

were used. The results are shown in a table. The author
descri-
bes briefly the spot welding of thermocouples to T15K6 and
T5K10
alloy cutting tips. The spot welding device was suggested by
Candidate of Technical Sciences Pugin, a worker of the
Institut
metallurgii AN SSSR (Institute of Metallurgy of the USSR AS).
Its circuit diagram is shown in Fig 3, while Figs 4 and 5 show
photographs of this device. There are 2 photographs, I circuit

TEXT: The followin-- method of generating current (voltage)
pulses was adopt ed: first, a voltage pulse of given duration 't
is forinod and tlien the required current or voltage pulse is
generated. This is done by using a driver pulse source to
actuate
a circuit for forming the rise time of the pulse; this circuit
produces a pulse with a given rise tiiiie C 5 - 10 ns).
Simultan-
eously, the driver pulse is ap.olied to a delay line and t-hen
to a
circuit which forms the decay edge of the pulse; this circuit
produces a signal of opposite polarity whose position
corresponds
to the duration of the pulse to be generated. The pulses of
op?osite polarities determining the leading and trailing edges
of
the Dulse are added and a pulse of required duration is
obtained.
This is thon applied to a forming circuit which produces an

ABSTRACT: The USSR Scientific Research Institute for Drilling
of Petroleum and Gas Wells has developed a new method
of replacing drill bits without removing the drilling
column from the well. The turbine drill is lowered
and raised along pipes which are let down into the
well. The pipes are of large diameter with a smooth
inner surface. A special overshot is lowered into
the column by cable to draw up the drill. A perfo-

the column to decrease the strain on the cable. A special
two-cone
drill is used in this work. This drill turns hydraulically
from a
vertical (transportation) position to a horizontal
(operating)
position by means of a swivel mechanism. Maximum depth,cut
per
drill bit is 9U m; the maximum rate of drilling is 45 m
hr. About
30 minutes is required to raise and lower the drill from a
depth of
1000 M. A diagram shows the method of getting the drill
bit into
working position. Inadequacies of the tested drill mcdel
are
pointed out and possibilities for its improvement are
noted.
