V.- V,_ TITLZ: Basic char%3cteristics of the isochronous cyS~ iron ~with variable particle energy SOURCE: intemational Conference on High Energy Acceleratorsi""Dubna, 1963. Trudy. Moscow, Atomizdat, 1964, WF_RT_ TOPIC ThGS: high enerty accelerator, ion beam, cyclotron ABSTRACT: At the Scientific Research Institute of Electrophysical Equipment in. D. V. Yefremov, a 2.4--meter cyclotron is being developed with a magnetic field hav- ing 3--dimensional variation. This cyclotron is intended to accelerate particles with Z/A equal to 0.125-1 in a wide range of energies. The limits of energy varia- tion, in Nev, are: 7.5-100 (protons); 5-60 (deuterons), 10-120 (alpha-partir-les), and 10-145 (nitrogen ions). The device is designed to obtain relatively large ion currents, which will make It possible to realize experiments with beans against in- ternal and remote targets. The principal parameters of the cyclotron include: pole diameter, 2400 ma; magnetic structure, tri-sector and weekly spiral; gaps, 230 an (hill) and-960 mm (valley); magnetic field in center, 4000-17,000 oersteds; Cori 1/3 L 2273-66 ACCESSION NR: AT5007942 total electromagnetic power, 2800 kilowatts; electromagnet's weight, 720 tons; fr*- quencies of resonance system, 5-22 megahertz; accelerating voltage in Dee, 125 kilo- volts; Dee gap 50 mm- high-frequency load, 600 kilowatts; stability, 10 4 (winding currents), 10 ~ (frequ'ency of accelerating voltage), and 10-3 (its amplitude). Af- ter deflection the beam is directed into a commutating magnet by which the beam can be directed against targets set up in three experimental rooms: M high-intensity b-eams, (II) neutron time-of-flight experiments, and (111) nuclear precision spec- troscopy with electromagnetic nonochromator. !on-optical channeling, focusing and commutating of the beam are done by six pairs of quadrupolar lenses, two identical rotary electromagnets, a monochromator electromagnet, and two small electromagnets for correction of the beam in the vertical direction. The resonance system is a quarter-wave coaxial line ending with the 180-degree Dee. Tne resonant frequency is reset by remote displacement of a plate without disrupting the vacuun. The fre- quency is established with an accuracy of 5-18 kc plus or minus. Smooth high-fre- quency regulation is provided by two trimmers, pernitting regulation of frequency to 2-4%. The high-frequency oscillator has a capacitative connection with the reso- nance system. A connecting rod is used, without disruption of the vacuum, to shift the Dee in the vertical and horizontal planes, and also along its own axis. The accelerator chamber consists of two sections: a high-vacuum chamber able to ex- haust , along with the resonant line, the magnetic gap; and a fore-vacuun section Card 2 / 3 L 2273-& ACMSSION KR: ATS007942 installed in the electr-cwmgnet poles. Remotely controlled measuring probes and targets for operating with the internal bean are installed in the chamber. Place- ment of the ion source is also done remotely; moreover, it is possible, without disruption of the vacuum, to shift the cathode and also the source as a whole. The magnetic field was modelled with an electromagnet having a pole diameter of 342 ma, on which several alternative magnetic systems were investigated; and also with an electromagnet having a pole diameter of 685 mm, which was used to investigate in detail modifications in the weakly-spiral structure. On the basis of the elec- tromagnet with poles 685 m in diameter, a star-t has been made at the present time on a cyclotron with three-dimensional variation of the magnetic field, with the magnetic system of a type described in the present report. The current cyclotron will. accelerate protons up to 8 Mev and deuterons up to 4 Mev, which will permit investigations into various alternative systems for yielding beans. Orig. art. has: 6 figures. General equations describing orbital parameters and dy-narnic phenomena In spacial -magnetic -field -variation accelerators are written after H. L. Hagedoorn at al. (Nucl. Instr. and Meth. . 18, 19, 201, 1962), R. S. Livingston at al. (Nucl. Instr. and Math. , 6. 1, 1959, and 6, 105, 221, Z34, 1960), and other sources. Unlike in the above sources, the higher-order terms In these equations are taken into account, which makes mathematical transformations c.,d 1/2 L 00942-66 ACCESSION NR: ATS015935 more complicated but yields more accurate results. The more accurate formulas' are desirable for analyzing medium-energy cyclotrons that use magnetic systems 1 with few periodic elements and deep radially nonuniform azimuthal variation General formulas for the equilibrium orbit, linear radial and axial oscillations, period of particle orbiting, and isochronism condition are derived. These formulas are also given in simplified forms suitable for quick rough estimates. The accuracy of the general formulas was verified by comparison with the results obtained on a computer for an easy-spiral 3-sector cyclotron with magnetic-field parameters defined an analytical functions of its radius. Cr can be introduced by the Verneuil process but not Fe, Ti nor other elements. Nevertheless, natural speci- ments exist with significant quantities of these inpurities. The hydrothermal methogs successfully used in the USSR for growing quartz can also be used for corundum. Specimens made in thiai&y were tested radios ectroscopically and by X-ray methods. It has been shown that Fe V++ ions entered the lattice isomorphously replacing the A.]. +++ ions. This increase will be felt especially in the formerly-neglected Ukraine, Kazakbatan, Uzbekistant Kirghizia and Tadzhikistan. In cities with a population of over 80,000, manually operated telephone ex- changes will be replaced by automatic ones. Present MB systems in stations will be exchanged for TsB or ATS sy- stems. The advantages of automatic systems over manual systems are shown in table 1, while percentages of the au- tomatic systems in the individual Soviet republics are shown on table 2. By now, over 25,000 telephone operators could be shifted to other work on account of increased au- tomation. In 1958, improved ten-step ATS-54 (Figure 1) were introduced with attached, fully automatic testing equipment developed by KITS, in order to test this modern- The Automation of the City Telephone Exchange ASSOCIATION: Card 2/2 SOV/111-59-1-8/35 ized ATS thoroughly.
