TITLE: The design of an optical reflecting system for all-round signal lamps PERIODICAL.- Referativnyy zhurnal, Elektrotekhnika i energetika, 7 no.9, 1961, 13, abstract 9V 109. (Svetotekhnika, ,no.2, 1961, 18-22) TEXT: on floating buoys in rivers it is more rational to use signal lamps consisting of a reflecting system with'a high-voltage discharge tube rather than the incandescent lamps with cylindrical lens and light filter which are used at present. The calculations are given for a parabolic-circular reflector with a circular focal line which coincides with the annular tube. The optical system, which is of circular symmetry, concentrates the light flux of the lamp only in a vertical plane. The light distribution curve of the optical system gives identical light output in all directions in the horizontal plane and in the vertical only in the range 15 - 200, which fully meets the Card 1/2 21(8) BOV/20-128-3-16/58 AUTHORS: Batuglov. TITLE: Formation of Mesons by n +-Mesons With 280 Mev Energy on Nuclei in a Fhotoemulsion PERIODICAL: Doklady Akademii nauk SSSRt 19591 Vol 128, Hr 39 PP 491-494 (USSR) ABSTRACT: When a positive pion oollides with a nucleon in a compound nualeusp two +charged is son4 may be foriled,by th~ following reactions; x + p -0 x + n + A (I), n' + n -s- n + %- + p (II). The authors investigated reactions (1) and (II) on the inter- action of fast positive pions with nuclei in the photoemulelono An emulsion chamber composed of ton layers of the emulsion NIKFI of the kind R (thickness 400 pq diameter 80 mm) was irradiated in a beam of positive pions with 307 Mev energy in the synchrocyclotrort of the Laboratoriya yadernykh problem (Laboratory for Nuclear Problems) of the Ob"yedinennyy institut yadernykh iseledovaniy (Joint Institute of Nuclear Research). Considering the slowing-down of mesons in the emulsion, the Card 1/4 results of measurement were referred to an energy of (230+20)Mev SOV/20-128-3-16/58 Formation of Mesons by x -Mesons With 280 Mev Energy on Nuclei In a Pac1o- emulsion of primary mesons. 13 (+ 4 probable) cases with two secondary mesons were recorded in 300 stars which had been found in the emulsion layers. In about 44 of the cases recorded only the track of a secondary particle could be found. When positive 280-Mev pions collide with nuclei of the photoemulsion# these pione in the nucleus are absorbed as often as negativE pions. Disintegrations totalled 92 with slowed-down negative pious, and 106 with positive ones. Further investigation dis- closed that 39 of these 198 disintegrations contained two secondary charged mesons. A diagram illustrates the energy distribution of mesons for the cases in which two secondary mesons were emitted- 7 of 112 investigated mesons possesaed an energy of more than 60 Mev. The spectrum attained its maxi- mum within the range 30-40 Mev. The major part of secondary mesons have an energy of less than 60 Mev, and the mean energy of the latter amounts to 30 Mev. The second diagram shows the spectrum of stopped negative pions. It resembles that mentioned aboveg yet it is distinctly shifted toward lower Card 2/4 energies. The mean energy of negative pione amounts to 16 Mev. +_ BOV/2o-126-3-16/58 Formati,)n of Mesons by n Mesons With 280 MeY.Snergy on Nuclei in a Photo- emulsion The difference in the mean energies of positive and negative pions ( - 14 Mev) in due to the effect of the Coulomb field of the nucleus. The angular distribution of pione within the center-of-mase system is not oisotropic, and attains a wide maximum at angles of - 100 . A table shows the angular distribution of mesons for oases with two mesons. A-distinot correlation in the direction of emission of.the. two secondary mesons Is noticed here. The cross, seotions of meson, formation during the collision of positive pions with nuclei in the photoemulsion were determined by comparing the-number of fornation processes with the number of stare produced by mesons within the same emulsion volume. The-medium range of positive pions for star formation in the emulsion amounts to (32-4..+,.2-3) cm. The cross sections of the formation of charged mesons 14 the processes n- + nucleus -D-n- and x + nucleus -*-a are of the same order of magnitudeo In most cases, the resultant menns are Worbed in the same nucleus. For th4 reactions 7C +n -~o X + R + p and Card 3/4 X + P -00-n + x + n, the cross sections (0, 3 + 0.2) and. Dzhele- poy for his interest in this investigation. There are 4 figuresp 2 tables, and 10 references, 6 of which are Soviet. PRESENTED; May 27p 1959, by L. A.
