TITLE: A method of measuring nuclear quadrupole resonanco
spectra at low temperatures
PERIODICAL: Pribory i takhnika eksperimenta, no.6, 1962, 138
TEXT: Nuclear quadrupole resonance spectra can be measured in a
metallic cryostat at the temperatures of liquid helium and
hydrogen. The*construction of the cryostat is based on a
previously described model (V.P.Babanko, V.L.Broude,
V.S.Medvedev,
Prikhot*ko, A.F., PTE, no.1, 1959, 115). The coil of the
oscillator circuit.1 is.submerged with the sample directly in
liquid He and fixed to a rigid coaxial line constructed from
German silver tube (30 mm diameter, 0.4 mii thick) 2 and a
central copper conductor (0.91nun diameier) .3 . The oscilla
*tor-
detector 4 is mounted on the upper part of the coaxial line
using a teflon and resin seal, i%nd the teflon.coil holder 5
is attached to the bottom. As the length of the coaxial line in
increased to 58 cm the frequency of 'the oscillator-detector in
lowered and its range reduced. . In order to change a samplo
the coaxial line is removed.from the cryostat when warm, which

the cryostat should enablq the sampl* to be replaced in the
cooled condition. The evaporation rate is:about I litre in 6 to

PERIODICAL: Tsvetnyye Metally, 1958, Nr 6, PP 15 - 25 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: Many processes in non-ferrous metallurgy involve
corrosive
media and the Konstruktorskoye byuro (Design Bureau)
Tsvetmetavtomatika (KB TsMA) have since 1955 been working
on pneumatic control methods, which are especially
suitable for such conditions. Other organisatiorsnamed
by the authors as some of those working in the same
field are: Institut avtomatiki i telemekhaniki Ali SSSR
(Institute of Automation and Telemechanics of the Ac.
Sc.USSR), BIITeplapribor, TsLL of the "Energochermet"
Trust and the "Tizpribor" Works. A wide range (Table 1)
is covered by the pneumatic transducers, pr(-.duced by
the HB TsMA (Figures I and 2) in whien use is mile of a
corrosion-resistant Soviet plastic. A series of corrosion-
resistant valves have also been produced (Table 2),

new Means for Automatic Testing and Control in Pon-ferrous
Metallurgy
(Figure 3). For the continuous analysis of hydro-
metallurgical solutions, the KB TsMA in 195? developed
(Figure 4) an automatic polarographic concentration-
meter, type KAP-225, with a transducer type DAPK-226:
this device has been successfully used at the *'Blektrotsink"
Works for analysing for cadmium in zinc electrolyte and
is based on alternating-current polarography. The
KB TsMA have developed a series of radioactive mthods,
particularly for level indication over a wide (type URP)
U-igure 5) and a relatively na row (type URPR) (Figure 6)
range. A radioactive density-meter, type PR-150,
independent of the mineralogical and size composition of
pulp over a wide range has been success-f-.'Ily tested at the
Zolotushitiskbqa oboptitellnaya fabrika: Iotushinsk a
Beneficiation *orks) (ranges 1.5-2.5 and~L-J2 kg/litrej.
Work is proceeding on other radioactive meters including
a moistur meter, for concentrates and similar materials.

RB TsMk; they have also developed an analyser (type
GAKh-239) for chlorine which is accurate to + 3% and these
two instruments are to be used in an integrafed automation
system being devised for the magnesium industry. The
KB TaMA have developed an automatic installation for
(Figures 7 and 8) controlling a single pump in relation to
the liquid level. Another recent activity of this organ-
isation has been the development of the type ATV-229 over-
heating protective device (Figure 9) and a twelve-point
temperature signalling device (Figure 10). The ATV-229
device is to be produced by the Tsvetmetpribor Works. In
collaboration with the Institut gigiyeny truda i profzabo-
levaniy ANN SSSR (Institute of Work Hygiene and Occupational
Diseases of the AMS USSR), the KB TsMA have developed a
device (Figure 11) for continuous measurement and recording
of mercury-vapgur concentration in air in the range
0-1 - 0-6 m9/R2 . This instrument (IMW-445) (Figure 11)
also givee an alarm signal if the concentration becomes
excessive and its range is being extended in both

ABSTRACT: Acute radiation sickness was induced in an experimental
group of 37 adult dogs with a single 350 r dose (RUM-3 unit, 180
kvp
10 map focal length 120 em). Seven days later the sciatic nerve was
out and sown together in animals of the control and experimental
groups, Materials were taken from the central and peripheral
sections
of the nerve for histological investigations at regular intervals
from the*5th to 90th days after the operation. The materials were
fixated in 12% neutral formalin and the sections were stained. In

nerve proceeds more slotily in the group of animals with radiation
sielmess. In later periods, regeneration in both groups proceeds in
a more similar manner. With the initial delay in nerve fiber
regeneration in irradiated animals, a sizeable neuroma often forms
in
the connective sear tissue by the 15th day. By the 30th day nerve
fibers are well developed in the peripheral nerve section of
control
animalss but are fewer in number and less well developed in
experimen-
tal animals. In the 30 to 60 day period the number of nerve fibers
increases but is stlill lower than in control animals. In the 60 to
90 day period the nerve fibers of experimental animals often
undergo
secondary degenerative ohangos including hyperimpregnation,
varicose
change, degeneration, and axis cylinder fragmbbtation. The
incomplete
restoration of the sciatic nerve function in the experimental
animals
appears to be related to the effects of ionizing radiation, Orig,
