TITLE:- Pelletising of Iron Ore Concentrates and Fine-Ores
(Poluoheniye okatyshey iz rudnykh konteentratov
i melkikh rud)
PERIODICAL: Stall, 1958, Nr 4, pp 289-294 (USSR)
,ABSTRACT: Methods of production of pellets from fine ores I
namely,
rolling in a drum, on a plate and rolling of-br quettes
made under low pressure in a warm press (extiusion) are
briefly compared. It is claimed that rolling of
preformed briquettes is most advantageous as pellets
produced are of a uniform size and high outputs can be
obtained. Main results of the latest experiments on
pelletising concentrates obtained by magnetic concentration
of Krivoy Rog quartzites are described, Chemical
composition and size distribution of the concentrates
is given. Lime ard limestone (0-3 mm) were used as fluxing
agents and bentanite, sulphite lyle and refractory clay
were used in some experiments as strengtheninG~agents.
Pellets were made by extruding briquettes which were out
Card 1/2 and rolled- in a drum. Firing of green pellets was done

on a sintering pan by oombustion of a gas-air mixture
over the layer of pellets (Fig.2). The. most suitable
firing conditions for a given raw material were
established in separate experiments. Gas permeability
and reducibility of pellets were compared with those of
sinter indicating the superiority of pellets in both
respects. On the basis of a large number of experiments
on firing pellets in a sinter pan it is claimed that2a
throughput of a Dwilight Lloyd sinter strand of 50 m
surface area and an ignition time of 28 =in oan'be
2000 tons/day. The consumption of heat under laboratory
conditions was 329 oal/kg which is smaller than that in
sIntering, can be further decreased by increasing the
be;d height. Blast furnace gas with a small addition of
coke oven gas can be used for the purpose. In the Moscow
Institute of Steel a scheme for industrial production
pellets was developed (Fig.4) and in 1958 8emi-industrial

TEXT% Experiments were made for the purpose of obtaining a material on
the basis of a solid Mg.Si-Mg2Sn solution with good thermoelectric
proper-
ties. Mg sublimed in vacuo, high-purity tin and silicon with a
resistivi-
ty of 10 ohmocm were used as starting material. Samples were melted in
corundum crucibles in an argon atmosphere. The temperature dependence
of
electrical conductivity and thermo-omf was determined by a method des-
cribed by Te. N. Rikitin (ZhTFP XXVIII9 23, 1958). The heat conduction
coefficient and the Q-factor were established by T. C. Harman's method
(J. Appl. Phys.~ 29, no. 9, 1373, 1958) (see Fig.1). Since deviations
from Pisareakols formula were established,. the notion of "optimum
carrier
concentration" had to be introduced. According to these data, the

ABSTRACT:
It is important from the
practical point of view to in-
crease the productivity of filters and
to reduce the humi-
dity of cakes. One of the means to increase the
effective-
ness of the filtration is the introduction in the suapen-
sion of reagents influencing the surface of molecules and
the
structure of cakes. To speed up the concentration and
the filtrationp
inorganic reagent coalgulators, like lime
or alum, are added. These
reagents reduce the electro-
kinetic potential of the molebules in
the suspension, and
under the influence of cohesive force, sets of
molecules
are formed which settle quickly. The authors describe
synthetic hi -molecular flocculents-used for these pur-
g
poses abroad

by Soviet industry
(KODT, KOD and PANG) are also described.

The Action of Surface-Acting Agents on Filtration
Concentrates
The efficiency of these Soviet products is represented
graphically. The authors find that the highly-molecular
flocculents act differently on different concentrates.
Only
the Separa, 2610, proiuced by the American firm Dow
Chemic-
als, speeds up the filtration of all the concentrates;
KODT and XOD increase the filtration productivity of lead,
cupri-pyritic, pyritic and cupri-oxided concentrates and
often reduce the humidity of cakes. PANG increases the
productivity of filtration of oxided lead and copper con-
centratsp.Aut does not work on other concentrates.
There are 5 graphs l"table and 11 references, 2 of which
are Soviet and 9 American.
