TEM. In this paper, which includes the period early April 1952 to
late
February 1954, the author analyzes the relation between a given type
of filament
-in earlier papers called free protuberance-filaments - and the
recurrent geo-
magnetic atoms. The free filaments are those which are not connected
to any.
center of attraction. They appear mainly in the upper heliographic
latitudes and
they extend in the direction of the parallels. Their existance often
lasts for
several rotations. They are Identical with those filaments forming
the last
evolution stage of' the active regions. They do not always
correspond with,the
dying protuberances, i.e. those which are generally difi~ned. The
passage of the
free filaments across the central solar meridian precedes under
certain circum-
stances the geomagnetio storms. These circumstances depend on the
surroundings
of same filament, on its isolation, and on the fact that in the
surroundings of

the filament and especially in the space betwien filment
and equator, there is no
other electromagnetic field. This finding owresponds with
those made by M.
Waldneier (Ref. 4: An attempt at an identli'loation of the
M-region. Terr.Magn.
and El. 51 (1946), 538),,oonoeming the M-reglon3. This Is
also the reason why
it Is impossible to find the simple connection between the
geomagnetic activity
and the free filaments during periods of intensive solar
activity. In this paper
the author used the diagram by H. W. and H. D. Babcock
(Ref. 17: The sun's
magnetic field 1952-1954. Ap.J., 121 (1955), 349) for
comparing the period of
appearing free-filament regions with those of UM-regions,
and she can state that'
the geophysical effects following the two phenomena are

TEXTs This study proved that the origin of goomagnetic storms
depends
on the position of the active area and on the position of the
eruption in
,/relation to the central meridian. This was confirmed by the
fact that the

from the sun strictry in radial direction* According to the
diagrams the
eraptione are not always followed by geomagnetic storms. It is
evident
that the eruption, being the cause of corpuscular emanation, is

taking
place outside the central meridian there can always be found a

TEM The material given in present paper is based on the experience
obtained from previous elaborations, where three kinds of filaments were
used in establishing the connection between the filaments and geomagnetio
stormai free, bound and eruptive. The observational material was collect-
ed, during the IGY and IGO. It was found. that geomagnetio storms occur
in 100% of the cases, when their occurrence in the center of the visible
solar diso is preceded by disappearing filaments, eruptive filaments and
meridional filaments, generally. The connection between the filaments
and geomagnetio storms is explained by a study of the coronal formations
above the filaments. There are 3 tables, 40 figures, 1 photograph and
48 referenoest 17 Soviet-bloc and 31 non-Soviet-bloo. The references to
