ABSTRACT: The investigations were motivated by the fact that when
a thermoelectric
converter is,operated in a nuclear reactor, the fission products,
a large fraction
of which are radioactive krypton and xenon, may enter in the
interelectrode gap of
the converter, and their effect on the converter in the operation
of a cesium diode
may be appreciable. The tests were made with experimental tubes
with. lUt elm-
trodes, using a molybdenum cathode and nioblum anodes. Doubly
distill!.~~!i metallic
cesium and spectrally pare krypton and. xenon were used in varying
amounts. 2he
cathode was fed with pulsating balfwave current. 2he cesium vapor
pressuie ranged
from 0.1 to 3.9 mm HS for the krypton-filled tube and 0.028 to 2
mm )jr, for the xeno&-

parallel shift of the temperature dependence curves towards smaller

Comparison of
the experimental re3ults vith calculations based on diffusion
tbeory-sbow in general
good agreementj, although some unexplained irregularities were observed
in that the
saturation current fonowing addition of xenon was higher them ronowing -
addition of
krypton., and that the experimental currents, usually -were lower than
the theoretical
ones. These deviations are. related to -thermal diffusion separation of
the' cesium-
krypton and cesium-xenon mixtures in the tube. The experiments show that
addition
of inert gases reduces the saturstion.current compared with pure
cesium.. The ex-
perimental saturation.currents were as a rule lower than the theoretical
ones by a
factai 2--4. Addition of krypton reduced the saturation current
more.than addition
of xenon. The thermal diffusion ratios were calculated for Cs-Xr and
Cs-Xe mixtures
in-the case of low cesium densities# The values obtained for the cross
sections of
