tion of Noriyskaya petroleum, isolated by frac-
tionation at a residual pressure of 200 mm Hg.

The fraction was washed with 70% H2S0~, 10% solu-
tion of soda, and with distilled water, to remove
the non-hydrocarbon components. Dearomatization
of the fraction was effected with H~SO~ sp. gr.
1.84. Thereafter the normal paraff~nic hydro-
carbons were isolated with urea, the amount of
which was taken on the basis of the mean mole-
cular weight of the fraction. The thus separated
n-paraffin hydrocarbons were extracted with
ethyl ether, after the removal of which the mix-
ture of n-paraffins was fractionated in a column
having the effectiveness of 45 theoretical plates
at a residual pressure of 10 mm Hg. The individ-

ual n-paraf�in hydrocarbons were found to be con-
centrated in the fractions having the boiling
points of 215-216 =, 2B~-2B5~, 25B_25~~ and
269-270�. From the investigated fraction of
Noriyskaya petroleum were isolated the following
n-paraffin hydrocarbons: dodecane, tridecane,
tetradecane, pentadecane, identified by their
physical properties and by the method of infrared
spec troscopy.

Thc method of selective dehydrogenation catalyszs

tative determination of the content of 5- and

gasoline fractions. It ~s noted that by virtue of their ~ beat of cembustio~~d
higher density, naph%hene ~el components decrease the ~el cons~ption for a g~ven
operational r~of ~ aircraft. To ensure as complete as possible ~ extraction of
naphthenes, as well as the separation of a high-percentage isoalk~e concentrate,
the gasoline frac%ion is subjected to treatment with thiourea (0.8 parts/1 p~'t gaso-
line) to remove the naphthenes, then to selective adsorption on a C~% molscular sieve
to remove n-~lke~es, then to dear~atization by chromatographic adsorption on silica
gel, ~d finally to a second thiourea treatment (0.5/1) to separate the remaining
naphthenes from isoalk~es. By this process, different gasoline fractions were

no. 3]. This method, developed for new triodesl can also be applied to other
tubes, and particularly to tubes of older types~ it is sufficient to change the
empiric corr~ection coefficients and to state:

The greatest effect, as regards the increase of KD, can be obtained with tubes
having a small grid current, for irmtance the older types 'T-433" ("G-43~") and

etc. The experimental check of the possibility of obtaining high values of Kp _
was therefore carried ~t with such tubes. A medium-wave 7-stage AM-transmitter
with grid-bias-modulation in the stage preceding the penultimate one wms used in
the tests (the three last stages were push-pull stages). The last stage (amplLCl~
of modulated oscillations) contained 6 "G-~33" tubes giving an oscillating power

TEXT: This is the first article of a serieS. At the Zak~ad Teehnologii

nologv Section), research is being carried out into ~he synthesis of organo-metal-
lie compounds, especially alkyl aluminum derlvatlyes as. catalyst components for
low-pressure polymerization of etb~vlene. Apart from this, polymerization of
ethylene in neutral solvents in presence of partly reduced CrO~ and higher pres-
sures is being investigated.' The basic condition for a succesfful synthesis is
the purlt� of ethylene. The most detrimental impurities are the molecular oxygen,
water, carbon mono-and dioxide organic compounds of oxygen and sulphur, and ace-
tylene. As the first step of investigation, the harmful influence of molecular
oxygen in presence of partly reduced chromium trioxide CrO3 (deposited on silica-

experiment ethylene containing only 0.00! % of oxygen was used. As solvent a
petroleum ether of 50 - 73�C boiling range was used. The activated catalyst
carrierjcomposed of ~ SiOo and 10% Aides,Was saturated with 1.6 N ch~omlc acid
solution, dried at 120�C~ a~d 3 batohes~o~ it were aativated in air, nitrogen
and Jkvdrogen respectively. The process of p~lymeri~ation was carried out for
3-5 h in 750 ml autoclave at 20 arm pressure and 1~3 - 1~5�C temPerature. Another
series of experiments was carried out with et~lene, to which o~gen was added in
proportions of 0.001, 0.02 and 0.083%. It was fou~ that increased oxygen content
a~versely a~feets the efficiency of the process a~ the mo!ec~lar weight of

Abstract

: Semchitsa (Czechoslovakia) Scientific Research
Institute divides mangel-wurzel accordin6 to
its productivity and starch content in 3 basic
groups: coarse, semi-saccharine and saccharine.
The coarse variety occupies by its yield of the
fodder mass the first place, but it takes the
last place by its starch content. Three [sicl]
coarse mangel-wurzel varieties are cultivated:
Eostelets, Barres, Yellow Unlcum and Buchan

Yellow Valets. The two of the last named
varieties exceed the half saccharine one by
l0 - 20% in weight. Coarse mangel-wurzel
grows almost at the surface of the earth;
this circumstance facilitates the harvesting
of the crop, but it deteriorates in storage.
The Yielding capacity of semi-saccharine
mangel-wurzel is less than that of the coarse
varieties. It contalns more nutrition sub-
stances and produces more haulm. It requires
a deeper soil cultivation. Red semi-saccharine
mangel-wurzel contains the largest amount of
starch. Saccharine mangel-wurzel has the
greatest content of starch in comparison with
other varieties, but the weight of its edible

Labormtoryan~ production scale experimen~s were carried
out on distillation of brandy alcohol from wine containing
added H202 (2.5 ml of 30~ solution per 100 liters of wine).
The experimentally produced alcohol was found to contain
twice as much aldehydes as the controls. Degustation re-
vealed an improvement in the quality of the alcohol treated
withE202, in comparison with the untreated alcohol. Exp~
riments were also undertaken on treatment of the brandy
distillates with N gO2 (25-50ml of 305 solution per 100

To improve the quality of grapoand fruit vodka, their
~hermal treatment is suggested in the presence of 2 to 3
~a~/nter (~th a suer ~ontent o~ ~) o~ ~ gra~e or
fruit concentrate with the introduction of HBO2 (14 milli-
liters of a 12~ H202 solution per 1OO liters) as well as
without it. The duration of the treatment at 55-60�C. is
from 4-5 ~months~ and at 65-7OOC. up to 8~ hours. A change
in the amtno acid eompocition by the thermal treatment has
been noted. Zu the case when a grape concentrate has been

after treatment, alanine and proline were fotu~d as well
as the newly formed -aninobutyric, tyrosine, v~lino
and isoleucine. Upon treatment of plum and apple vodka,
there were formed more cystin% lysine~ arginine, -ami-
nobutyric acid~ tyrosin% valine. The data concex, ning
the change in composition of volatile impurities (higher
alcohols, aldehydes~ acetals, ethers, volatile acids)
are contradictory. The amount of furfurol is increased
upon treatment.

~nfluence of Fertilizers on the Composition of the Ascending Sap Stream in
the Vine
by the roots of nitrogen is effected rapidly, whereas its con--
version into amino acids tzkes place in a certain sequence: ~
first als~uine, and eventually dicarboxylic acids are synthe-
sized. The synthesis of tho basic and &romatic ~mino acids t=
said to take place much later by means of trans-~mination
(Ref 17). Phosphorus fertilization probably ~lso favored the
crease in the amino acid content in the fertilized vines
(Ref 18). The investigations by the authors have shown ammonium
nitrogen to be taken up by the vine roots in an organic form.
From there it is transported upwards into the individual
organs in the form of various amino acids. The most intensive
conversion of inorganic nitrogen into amino acids takes place
during the first days after its application to the soil.

Abstract: ~uthors' Serbocroatian summary modified_~ The epidemic of
infectious hepatitis in the vicinity of the Bosnie~u vil]aEe of
Koncanica lasted more than a year and a half. The authors tried to
determine whether the early hospitalization of sufferers might
prevent the further spread of the disease, but the isolation of
patients did not check the epidemio. The len~h of the epidemic
was probably due to the types of settlements (one village ~~!ong
both sides of a road, another huddled in the midst of a woods,
another on neighboring hills, al). with a single com~.'~on elementary
school) and hygienic conditions (poorly protected ~ells, no sewage
disposal system), but early hospitalization may have played a
