compounds all of which contain five ions. The formation of
such compounds
between chlorides and sulfates of alkali metals has hitherto
been ur,,-
known. There is no isomorphism between the salts of Li and
Na in the
quaternary system under considerationo Both the.sulfates and
the ohlo.rides
form double-salt complex compounds. The action of the medium
upon tho
formation of complex compounds conslats in that the
introduction of
ohlorides of Liv Xa,, K into the melt of the sulfates of
theso elements
facilitates crystallization from the pure sulfate melt. The
guiding a0r.

was furthermore ascertained. The authors refer to M. A.

founded in 1949 on the base of the Institute of Marsh
Lands., Academy Latvian SER. The Institute has five
divisions: hydrology) hydromelioration, crop growing,
mechanization, and ma sh land draining. The members of
the institute are developing methods of draining peat
corbanic soils, svanpy meadows, and law lying turf
lands;
they are studying problem of the draining of fores4"-;
are taking part in the development of a system of
meliora-

in-
fluence of the draining methods, on yields of wheat

ABSTRACT: A'Btudy of the
morphological,.biochemical and antigenic character, haemolytic
and haemngglutinating capacit-Y, derzoonecroeis in rabbits and
pothenogenity in mice, lys0selisitivity nnd lysogenicity as well
as sensitivity to antibiotics of 60 strains of haemolytic
Fscherichia coli and 33 non-haemolytic strains. No clear
difference of any kind was found between the results with the
two categories; a-loot it was not possible to entablish a
relationship 1~etveen the haemolyti-c capacity and the patho-
