Even in the first period of the existence of Turkmen SSR scientists from Moscow and other scientific centers of the Soviet Union afforded great assistance to the republic in.the matter of study of its natural resources. Eapeditions of the Academy of Sciences USSR operated in Turkmenia under the guidance of outstanding scientists such as Academicians A. Ye. Ferman and D. I. Shcherbakov, Then preparations were begun in the republic for local cadres of scientific associates. At present., the Ge- ologists of Turkmenistan are occupied with the study of its useful minerals (petroleum# ozokerite., anthracitej etc.), with the study of its underground waters and methods of utilization, and with working out problems of the exploitation of local materials for construction (application of local sands, proparation of easily melted enamels without the need for expensive materials). the geophysicists of the republic are working on the problem of forecasting earthquakes. In the Institute of Antiseismic ConstructiOn structural designs for regions of high seismicity are being developed. (RZhGeol. The following 3 questions were discussed at last year's conference: 1) Students' course work (lecturer I.A.Kalamina, Candidate of Philological Sciences), 2) Some questions on student esthetic education (lecturer Ye.I.Stepanova, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, and 3) Student scientific-atheistic education (lecturers S.I.Ruzhitakaya, instructor). On the second point, the lecturer suggested that esthetic Card 1/1;j education be given more varied forms: frequent lectures on Inter-Vuz Scientific Conferences 3-8-13/34 art, collective visits to theaters, museums etc. The lecturer on atheism proposed that the students be encouraged to make atheistic propaganda among the population. The conference was also attended by teachers from other schools. The oon- ference was opened by,,Professor F.A.Azimov, University President. The diodes were obtained by diffusion of Zn in Gaks doped with Te. The injection pulses were short (0-5--5 psec) and rectangular, with repetition frequency 40-1000 cps. The measurements were made at 77 and 4.2X. Observations were made of the integral- and of the spectral polarization, using polaroid film. To determine the change in the refractive' index, monochromatic light modulAe-d-Wi-I kHz was passed through the GaAs sample. The I signal from the light receiver was amplified with a narrow-band amplifier and then fea, to an automatic plotter through a synchronous detector. The cryostat with the sample I was placed between two polarid films. When no field was applied to the sample and the' polaroids were crossedp the recorded signal was practically equal to zero. Applica- tion of the field produced birefringence in the sample. The linearly polarized light thus becam e ellijortically polarized after passing through the sample. The measurement yielded the dependence of the phase difference EP on the intensity E of the external Card 1/2 L 11389-67 ACC NR: AP7000399 electric fields ffor different energies W. Me plot of 60 vs. E does not extrapolate to zero at E = 0, but to a value 60 - 4* clue to the presence of strains in the crystal which lead to the appearance of birefringence even in the absence of an external field T!he results also indicate that the main contribution to the change of the dielectric constant with changing field is made by the transitions between the maximum. of the valence band and the minimum of the conduction band. The experimental data deviate appreciably from the theoretical ones at the very edge of the absorption band. The discrepancy is especially pronounced in 'strong electric fields, and is due to smeariq of the edge in such fields and to the appreciable increase of absorption in this energy region. Other causes of the discrepancy are also discussed. Orig. art. has: 2 figures and 4 formulas. The mill consists of a roughing stand, a two-stage reduotor-and an electric motor.. The rolling dies are fixed an the bracket ends of the, two rolls. A groove in milled in the lower roll which corresponds to.the required shape of the rolled and of the work piece- The upper die has a corresponding extension. A pneumatic clamp Is fixed on the lower roll end. The grooves are adjusted by regulating the length of the cannec-: ting rod in such a manner that the shafts bearing the dies perform two synchm-4 nous rocking oscillations with about 72 amplitude. During the first rocking oscillation the blank end acquires the shape shown in Fig. 2. It is finished at the end of the second swingingl 'the third pass is a smoothing one and the fourth oscillation, is Idle, without the blank. At its'termination a new blank is placed r .ard 1/2 S/130/61/000/012/004/006 A pendulum mill A006/A101 ,per hour and into the groove. The pendulum mill produoes about,1,000 pieces eliminates the trimming operatlon since the product has a-strictly defined configuration. The mill can be used for the production of ,articles, requiring oonsiderable transverse widening;,for this purpose the dies have to be exohanged~~ ASSOCIATIONt Laboratoriya :avtomatizatsii i mekhanizataii.Vyksunakogo metallur- gicheskogo zavoda (Laboratory, of Automation and Mechanization of the Vyksa Metal- huBtal Plant).
