TITLE: Determination of the isotopic composition of lithium by
the
method of activation analysis
PERIODICAL: Atomnaya energiya# v. 10, no, 5, 1961, 528-529
TEXT: The present "Letter to the Editor" describes an express
method for
the determination of the isotopic composition of lithium. The
method
enables the determination to be made with sufficient accuracy
mithout the
neel of complicated apparatus. The reactions Li 6(n,a)T
(thermal neutron
induced, cross section 930-10-24 CM2) and 016(T,n)Pl8 are used
for the
activation analysis. By means of these reactions the quantity
of Li 6 in.
a mixture of Li 6_Li7 is determined. This method requJres that
one and the
same compound containing lithium and nitrogen be used for the
morking sample
and the standard. This compound must satisfy the following
requirements:
1) It must be easily obtained from other compounds, 2) it must
be suitable

for the preparation of the target 3) It must contain sufficient
nitrogen
over the free path of triton, and 4)(no, ositron or gamma activity
with
E7:)~O-5 Mev should appear by dire:t ng 5 reactions on other
components of
the compound. The lithium compound to be analyzed is converted into
a
carbonate and It Is then pressed into tablets of 40 mg weight (8 mm
in
diameter). These are placed in polyethylene caskets and arranged in
the
reactor hole at distances of 1 am each. The positron activity of
F18 and
C; tam
the annihilation of gamma quanta (E, MO. ev) are measured,
respectively,

by an end-window P-counter and by a on 01 scintillation y-spectro-
meter with Nal(Tl) crystal. On a 5 mi radiation in a thermal neutron
flux of -04-10 11 n/om2sea the carbonate of the natural lithium
showed 4 hr
after the irradiation a gamma activity in the photopeak of -J500
pulse:;,/Min
at an effectivity of - 0.07. The half-width of the photopeak was
0.51 Mev
which corresponds to a halflife of 112 min. The Li6content of the

The sensitivity of this method of Li 6 determination-lies at
10-6_. 10-7 gLi 6.
Experiments were also made in which large tablets (20
mm-diameter, -500 Mg)
were enclosed in paraffin blooks and bombarded with 14 Mev
neutrons. The
flux was v169 n/sec and the time of irradiation 3 hr. Half an
hour 'after
the irradiation the P-peak of the P (natural isotopic
mixture) was
-100 pulses/min. There are I table and 5 references: 2

the K-capture decay
- 240, -the- d,n) reaction on Pu239
of Am to PU The'YAm24O was obtained from , and
was deposited on a teflon substrate. The 7 ray spectrum was
recorded with scintilr
lation spectrometers employing 4 x 4 and 8 x 5 cm NaI
(Tl),sustals. The spectro-
meter employing the 4 x 4 cm crystal was calibrated with A ,
C0144, Aul9B, and
C060 sources, the absolute activities of which had been easured
with a 4v 0 counter
or an ionization chamber. Gamma rays ascribable to Am 24S were
observed at 100, 940,
1040, and 1400 keV. The 100 keV linp.-is attributed to K x
radiation. Fromthe in-
tensities of the different 7 rays it is concluded that of the
electron capture decays
of' Am240 . some 20% go to the 940 keV level In Pu240, 80% go to
the 1040 keV level,'
and 0.11% go to the 1400 keV level. The 1400 keV gamma line was

Cenerating liver has been studied. The cortisono affect, which
retards re-
generation, is also manifested in the hls~ochemical appearance of
the liver.
The post-hopatectomic accumulation of DNAVRNA and structure
proteins is
delayed, there is a lesser increase in alkaline phosphatase and
ATP-ase
activity and the behavior of the oxidative enzymes is also
considerably
altered. Following adrenalectomy, the activities of oxidative
enzymes and

ABSTRACT: The lipid and glycogen content of the
liver, the 'protelin. bound hexose and seromucoid content of
the serum, and
the relative distribution of serum protein substances has been
investigated
in rats following partial hepatectomy, cortisone treatment,
cortisone treat-
mrnt and subtotal hepatectomy, as well as in rats killed 3
days after bi-
lateral adrenalectomy. It was characteristic that a high
degree of eleva-
tion in the mucoprotein content and in the relative amount of
al-globulin
occurred in the most active phase of liver regeneration. The
same could
also be observed following adrenalectomy. The development of
these changes
was inhibited by cortisone.which also had a retarding effect
on the regenera.
