Abstract: The article consists of two parts. In the
first, the structurally
and biochemically rather well-known functional
organization-of the muscles
is discussed. In the second part, the structure of the
cell parts which per-
form active motion, such as the cilia, flagellae are
described. These have
been studied in detail. recently. The article was
presented at the meeting
of molecular biologists in Tihany, Hungary. No

"Hygienic and Economic Aspects of the Effect on the
Meat Surface, of
Wetting and Drying."
Budapest, Magyar Allatorvosok Lapja, Vol 18, NO 7 ,
July 1963, pp 288-291,
Abstract: [Authors' Hungarian summary modified] The
authors established
that a protective layer similar to fascia. is produced
on the surface of
the meat as an effect of dryin.g. This layer decreases
the wiight loss due
to evaporation during cooling and retards soiling and
bacterial deconposi-
tion. Thus, it is advantageous both from the points of
economy and hygiene.
Study on wetting of meat shows that between wetted and
not-wetted cut meat
there is a weight difference of 1 per cent after three
days on 250C. The
weight difference, under similar conditions, is 0.5 per
cent for meat which
has this fascia-like layer. Studies on weight loss
under varying conditions
are reported. The ammonia nitrogen content of meat was
also determined un-
der varying conditions. Production of ammonia starts
immediately after
slaughter and its rate is greatly increased by
temperature. Ammonia IN de-
terminations were used instead of the often
questionable evaluation of bac-
terial counts, although the wet medium of meat
facilitates the bacteria-free
decomposition as well which also produces ammonia. No

"Water as a World-Wide Problem."
Budapest, Honvedorvos, Vol XVIII, No 4, Oct-Dec 66, pages
272-282.
Abstract; In the introduction, the formation and
importance of water, the
water reservoirs of the world and a historical survey of
the supply of water
are discussed. The principal topic of the article, water
economy, is divided
into discussion of the 1) quantitative characteristics,
2) qualitative charac-
teristics, 3) epidemics spread by water, 4) irrigation
and 5) the satisfaction
of future water demands. In 1), the water needed by
different industries and
the ratio of surface water in the water supply of
different nations are tabu-
lated. In 3), the number of cities with centralized water
supply and statis-
tical data on epidemics spread by water in the USA are
discussed. In 4),
the water reservoirs and hydraulic works built at the
Volga and the dams of
the Tennessee valley are mentioned. In 5), the attempts
made to use less
water or reclaii4ed waste water by the industries, the
protection of the natural
water reservoirs and the desalting of sea water are
mentioned among other
topics. 7 Eastern European, 20 Western references.

Abstract: Filters produced in Western Germany (Co 5)
and of Czechoslovak
Manufacture (HUFS and VUFS) were compared in the
determination of bacterium
coli index in water,, in the proof of enteral bacteria
by the haptene floc-
culation method, and in the sterilization filtration
of phage suspensions*
The filtration efficiency of the products ie
identical,, but the Czechoslo-
vak products have a lower rate of filtration, and
their regeneration is
more difficult* 1 Tablep 19 Westernt 7 Czechj, I

There are different types of the reversed crossing
phenomenon depending on the
mutual relation of the calibre of the vein and the
artery lying beneath it. If a
small vein crosses over a large artery the vein
forms an arch climbing over the
artery and nestling close to it. If a large vein
crosses a small artery, the rigid
artery may be pressed into the lumen off the vein.
the vitreal face of the vein not
presenting any visible changeor the vein is
deflected in Its course as if it stum-
bled over the artery. or in a grosser form the vein
may be lifted upwards towards
the vitreous forming an edged arch, the diameter of
the arch being larger than the
lumen of the small artery, the vault being caused by
the rigidity of the venouS
walls. If a vein crosses over an artery of the same
calibre, the vein may form an
arch over the artery, that means It ascends in an
oblique plane and descends in
the same way, or the vein to dene cted from its
direction and forms two rectangular
bends, one in front and the other behind the
crossing. (Duke-Elder points to these
phenomena In his Text-bDok, Vol. 111, pag. 2688.)
These reversed crossing
phenomena are less frequent than the regular ones
because of the relative scarci-
ty of reversed crossing. They are found almost only
in cases with blood pres-
sure over 200 mm.Hg. They are the consequence of an
active Involvement of the
veins in the pathological -vascular changes. Stein -
