ABSTRACT: A study was made of the use of waste blast-furnace
slag for
the surfacing of automobile highways. It is noted that the
proces-
sing of the waste slag should include a grading operation, so
that
use can be made of the broken pieces, the fines, and the dust.
Where large dumps are concerned, it is recommended that a
crushing and grading installation be set up as part of a system
for processing the slag with explosives and excavators, scrap
separators, and fractional graders. The Author indicates the
advisability of a wide adoption of the casting of large slabs
and
small blocks from slags of current output and that, if their

requisite in-
gredients.

ABSTRACT: A summary is given of the theory of calculating
flexible-
type roadway pavements that has been adopted in the USSR
and
some other countries. Various means are examined whereby
the strain characteristics of different types of ground
and road-
surfacing materials are determined. An account is includrd
of
the net results of a studymade of water conditions in
roadbeds
and of subsequently inferred theoretical laws governing
ground
shifts and moisture accumulations in roadbeds.

ABSTRAM The author states that the Kharikoy Automobile and Road
Institute
is trying to got the students to participate in the scientific-
research work of the professorial chalr& and ind 'ividual
instruct-
ore# to arouse their interest in their chosen speciality. Both
students and faculties bave profited from this work. The author
lists some examples. The aurability of the automobile highway
Kiyev - Khar1kov was examined. Great help was 'given:to the
Khar1kov Slag Block Works, where an experimental plant for the
production of non-Amont slag blocks was erected. The student
work often yielded good production results. As an example, the
students introduced at the L'Yov Automobile Repair Plant a
method
of coating cracked cylinder heade, with sine, developed the tech-

ABSTRACT: Automobile tire adhesion to road surface is
characterized by an adhesion
factor which has a significant effect on safe maximum automobile
speed and determines
the economic efficiency of vehicle transport. The adhesion
factor is a function of
surface ty-pe and degree of roughness, wear and condition. This
factor is not constant
for any period of time but varies from season to season and year
to year depending on
cl~natic conditions. It is highest during simmer months and
falls sharply in winter.
The most dangerous period for travelling is fall and winter. The
adhesion factor
drops from ig-er to winter from 0.75 to 0.40. The miniTnuin
values for this factor
have been determined for many regions of the SSSR and run from
O.h to 0.6. The
authors discuss a method developed at the Kharkov Autcmobile
Highway Institute for de-
Card
ACC NRs AT6016343
termining the adhesion factor. Thin method is based on braking
distance measurements.
An expression is given for calculating the longitudinal
adhesion factor using this
method. Experimental verification of the th,aoretical data was
done on the KhADI
Mobile Laboratory based on the GAZ-51-truck,'-\wing the M-20
automobile as the test
vehicle. The results show that the adhesion factor is highest
(0.8-0.9) in warm
weather for a dry asphalt surface and decreases to O-h5-0.55
for wet or dirty surfaces
During winter months the adhesion factor is 0.20-0.25 for snow
and 0.14-0.18 for ice.
All of these data are for the same road section. The effect of
air temperature an the
adhesion factor is considered. The authors recommend that
since the minimum safe-ad-
hesion factor is 0.4, the road service crews abould
systematically measure the exist-
ing factors for various roads and develop effective means for
maintaining a factor
which ensures safe travel. Orig. art. has: 2 tables, 3

ABSTRACT. AC aervosystems often are based on induction motors
and tachogenerators with a hollow nonzagnetio rotor. TRY-a-ul-tNors.
propose a new method of determining the transfer functions of
ln"~uotlon motors and tachogenerators according to the parameters
of their equivalent circuits. An amplitude equation for the tor-
que of the induction motor with a hollow normagnetio rotor Is
derived on the basis of the theory of symmetric components or
two-phase systems In steady state, An analytic exprossion of the
linear relation of torque to motor RPM Is derived on the assump-%
tion thatj since In Induotion motors with a hollow nonmagnetio
rotor the rotorto resistance Is always of a considerable magni-
tude, It oan be generally assumed that In the low RPM range the

symmetric components of stator ourrents are practically Indepen-
.dent of motor RPM. A now method of determining the parameters
.of 'O',he equivalent circuits of Induction motors with a hollow non-
magnetic rotor is described; by means of this method the basic
'components of the transfer functions of these motors, as well.as'!
of tachogenerators with a hollow nox=agnetlo rotor, may be deters
mined. Essentially, this method consists In performing a short
circuit experlment on a machine from which the rotor and Inner
stator are removed and'replaced with a drum of nonconducting and
nonmagnetic material of a diameter equal to the diameter of the
hollow rotor and equippea with a measuring coil supplied with a-
reBulable amount of voltage* The findings are used to caloulate',
:.the parameters of the equivalent o1roult, A more detailed des-
,oription of this method will be presented in a subsequent_~rti_,-,

ABSTRACT: This is a continuation of an article publishad In IVUZ.

circuits of asynchro-
'Anous machines with hollow non-magnetic rotors were carried out
in accordance with the
new method at the Laboratory for Electrical Miniature*Machines and
Servo Systems of
the Minsk Radio Engineering Institute (Laboratoriya

generator. The experimental results are found to be in good
agreement with the
calculated results. The now method Is relatively simple and
reflects the actual.
physical processoa taking place in the machines with sufficient
accuracy. The main
shortcoming of the method is that the short-circuit tests of the
machine require the
removal of its rotor and stator and, consequently, its
disassembly. Orig. art. haBr'
