ABSTRACT: Since the object viewed in the electron microscope is
irradiated
with electrons, the authors were able to observe directly the
effect of the radiation upon cells of Bacillus mycoides and
B.mesentericus in the humid miorochamber. The authors divide
thg radiatign dosages largely into three groupst 1~ Doses below
10 to 5*10 r, by which no noticeable morpholpical damage is
done to the cells; 2. doses between 127 and 10 r, which cause
visible damagel and 3. doses above IOY r, with which the cell
polymerizes; it is "fixed"o so to speak, by the electron beam.
The authors used exposures from 5 to 10 seconds. The object was
irradiated in its original state while the photograph was takent
and then dried or investigated without drying. Dosage group 1i
Figure 1 a shows a group of cells of B.mycoides photographed in
Card 1/2 the humid state. Figure 1 b shows the dried

group 2& Figure 2 shows the effect upon B.mycoides and
B.mesentericus. Pigure 3 shows the changes caused in B.mycoides
by irradiation with 108 , figure 4 changes in B.coli by irra-
diation with 1010 and 10 1 r. The authors state in conclusion
that by direct observation of the effect of the ionizing radia-
tion in the electron microscope upon individual bacteria cells
(not upon a culture as a whole) they found the following6
changes to take place when the dosage was raised from 10 to
1010 rt At first no visible morphological changes occur in the
cells. Some processes which had gone on before the irradiation
continue to take place. Theng however, visible morphological
damage is causeds the cell membrane and flagellum are destroyedv
the protoplast changes considerably, and eventually the cell is
polymerized. The authors thank Yu~ M. Kushnir and M, N, Meisel',

ABSTRACT: PrimaryC;yj~ures prepared from white rat bone marrow were
gamma-irradiated o GUPOS unito 700 r/min) with single 500 and
1000 r doses. Three hours after irradiatlon the cultures were
centrifuged and the sedimentation fixed for polymerization. Using
benzoyl peroxide as a catalyst, polymerization was conducted at
50-540C for 18-24 hrs- Ultrathin sections were prepared with a
mierotons and investigated with an 1EM-5Y electron microscope.
Microscopic findings show that the ultrastruotural organization of
the

calls which form the primary bone marrow culture consists of two
call
types, reticular and myeloid. The culture cells preserve in their
ultrastructural organization the basic characteristics of the
initial
bone marrow cells, Gamma-irradiation of bone marrow culture cells
leads to an increased nuclear surfacop disorder of mitochondrion
internal organization, vesicular degeneration of the Golgi
apparatus,
and membrane dilation of the endoplasmie reticulum. Changes in the
ultrastructural components of the irradiated cell cultures suggest
possible disorders of oxidizing phosphoryllations protein, nueloic,
and lipid metabolism processes. The electron microscopic method
conpared to other microscopic methods proves to be more sensitive
for
finding early ultrastructural changes in irradiated cell cultures.

latter represented by Str. faecalis in 74 percent ol the
strains.
Approximately 8s5 percent of the animals showed potlntially
entero-pathogenic coli-like organisms.
