T1TIEt Development of a Method of Metal Dressing by a Solution for the Purpose of Studying the Effects of Passivity (Razvitiye metoda zachistki poverkhnosti metallov pod rastvorcm dlya issledwmniya yavleniy passivnosti) P SSR Zavodskaya Laboratoriya, 19583 Vol. 24, Nr 3, pp. 299-303 (U ABSTRACT: The method mehtioned in the title was developed by G.B. Klark and G.V. Akimov CRef. 1 D. -The system was improved in that metal- dressing is carried out on the entire part of the surface that is in contact with the electrolyte; the emery stone has an automatically controlled and constant velocity; the test vetsdl is thermally controlled, and experiments can be carried out in an atomsphere of different gases. A schematical drawing with an exact descrip- tion is given. The influencesof the somposition of stainless steel on the velocity of the formation of the protective coating as well as that exercised by the composition of the solution upon the Card 1/2 latter in tungsten3 zirconium., and' titanium was investigated. As Development of a Method of Metal Dressing by a Solution 32-3-17/52 for the Fur-pose of Studying the Effects of Passivity may be seen from the results of investigation and from the dia- grams given, the influence exercised by the composition of steel is of decisive importance. Among other things it was found that an increase of the concentration of chlorine ions in the solution renders re-establishment of the passivation & zirconium and titan- ium more difficult., whereas that of tungsten is rendered somewhat more easye The re-passivation of titanium in a 3n IEZ+0.2n NaJ solution is independent of the influence exercised by the oxygen in the air, as it promotes the foramtion of the J~_complex ions. The method described makes it possible to carry out other investi- gations of this kind as e. g. that of the influence exercised by protective coatings upon the polarization properLies of metals. A new modification of the absorp- tion method for finding the self-dif"ion coerficient with the help of a control slice of 8 mm in diameter and 3 M high is described.. This method permits not to take into account the radioactive decay correction. The method applies thin radio-. active layers on the heated surface ofithe sardple by evaporation from the solid phase. The coefficients of the diffusion of irba into zirconium werd established. It is shown that the atomic mobility of iron in the zirconium lattice is higher .than of tantalum. and tin. The relationship between the diffusion coefficients of iron in zirconium is given b formulas: Card 2 ACCESSION NR:* AP4ol2034 D..ze-2.5-104exp 4800.0- co-sec-1., Djj,=4- 10-1 exp 3000oh7r The authors appreciate very mugh the sincere interest and help in this .work of V.
