Bobchenko was recently published by Sellkhozgiz. This oo , w ich is of interest for irrigation specialists ~s well as for persons engaged in practical ir- rigation work, makes preference to experience obtained in subsurface irrigation in the USSR and abroad during the past 20 - 30 years. Bobchenko examines in his study all known types of subsurface irrigation practices, and pays special attention to irrigation by xeans of underground pipes and "mole-track" type machines. The author points out several short-comings and omis- sions. and especially criticizes the fact that Bobchenko does not refer to the work of Professor Yanert. of the German Democratic Republic, who is regarded as one of the most pro- minent specialists in this field. Belorussk. politekhn. in-t, 1957, Nr 57, pp 47-59 ABSTRACT: The emplqyment of sulfur compounds for the purpose of improving sliding conditions between rubbing surfaces is examined on a,._pumber of examples. It is pointed out that sulfides applie*a to steel surfaces prevent the occurrence of fusion between them, preclude scoring, and reduce friction and wear. Wear-resistance tests under dry friction were carried out on specimens with sulfur- saturated surfaces. The coefficieds of friction and wear were determined as functions of velocities einployed in the tests, temperature, and pressures on the contacting surfaces, The following sulfur- saturating Card 1/2 media were employed: 1) two low-temperature baths (180-2000C), 137-58-3-5930 Wear-resistAnce'Studies of Metallic Surfaces (cont. ) composed of KCNS and a mixture of KCNS with 15-20 percent of alumopotash alums; 2) a medium- temperature bath (5600), composed of 38 percent CaC12+ 25 percent BaCl?+17 percent NaCl (as a base), 13.2 percent FeS+3.4 percent Na?S04' 5H?O (active ingredient), and 3.4 percent K4Fe (CN)6 (catalytic agen4; 3) solid FeS; and 4) HZS. It is established that the effect of treatment with S is clearly manifested under increased pressures on rubbing surfaces, and that the high- temperature treatment (930-9500) in FeS increased the wear- resistance of cast iron to a level equivalent to that of carburized steel.
