ABSTRACT:' The 110-kv transmission line supplying left-bank substations of the
Stalingrad Hydroelectric -Station construction site crosses the Volga River on
two 27. 5 -m anchor towers on each bank and on two 90 -m suspension towers.
Type ZOL luminaires are used on the right bank for guarding the towers; the
lamps. are supplied through a transformer substation from a nearby 6-kv line.
The left-bank towers are guarded by type NT luminescent tubes which are sup-
plied by one of the two lightning -protection cables that act as an antenna. The
cable was disconnected from ground, and 20-mm spark gaps were installed for

lightning protection instead; the second cable was dead grounded. The lumines-
cent tubes are supplied directly by the cable. This scheme Ills removed the
need for two special transformers and two TG transformers, has simplified
mounting, and increased reliability and safety. A 6, 100-v voltage is induced
in the antenna. Five luminescent tubes are connected in series, with a 20-ma
current and an overall power of 182 w. During two years of operation, there
was not a single case of any disturbance. Visibility of the luminescent tubes is
20 km at night in fair weather and 15 km in snowfall, fog, or rain, either day
or night.

PERIODICAL; Vysokomolekulyarnyye aoyedineniya, 1960, Vol. 21 No. 12,

TEXT: Two methods have been developed for the preparation of polyethyl-
ene oxides: 1) polymerization of ethylene oxide in the liquid phase at
120-1500C and 15-20 atm, and 2) by passing gaseous ethylene oxide into
alkalic solutions of glycol. The composition of polyethylene oxides and
their properties depend upon the ratio of ethylene oxide : water and
ethylene oxide : glycol. The influence of the concentration of the cata-
lyst (KOH or NaOH) on the rate of reaction and on the properties of the
polymers is illustrated in Fig-5. The maximum value for the molecular
weight of the polymerizate depends on the nature of the catalyst and the
purity of the monomer., The rate of polymerization'in the autoclave depends
on temperature, catalyst concentration, and conditions of contact between

with an increase of the molecular weight of the polymer and with a re-
duction of the catalyst concentration. Two methods of purifying commer-

been investigated. Polymers with a molecular weight of 4000 were ob-

Abstract :For olootrons in c constant hmiogonoous external field, the
authors consider tho kinetic equation with a phoncoenological
right-hand portion, oqunl to the retio of the deviation of
the distribution f~motion from the equilibrium veluo to the

TEXTS 3) Hungarian success in research on olootroluminescences The patent
by GydrgZ Sziget and Zoltin Bay concerning the electroluminescence
lamp containing SiC or-o-tTe-rsemiconduotors (Ref. 42) marked the beginning.
In 1953, Szigeti made a report at the let Congress of Hungarian
Physicietep and in 1954 at the Congress on Luminescence in Cambridge on
further experiments (Refs. 32945,46948)- In opposition to Claus and
Finkelnburgq he held the,-opinion of the luminescence activator being ex-
coos carbon. In 1954, KArolY Jeges studied several hundreds of crystals,
and discovered the electroluminescence of cassiterite. He found the pure
artificial SnO 2 crystal to be a good insulatorp and to exhibit semi-
conductor or elootroluminescenoe phenomena only in the case of there

being Si admixtures present. In 19549 Elem6r Nagy reported at the 3rd
Extramural Meeting of the Lork-ad B8tv88__ff_o_i_i__ety of Physics on the joint
study of semiconductor- and eleotrolumineacerne properties of SiC. The
Austrian patent 194977 by Elem6r Nagy and J608 S2ab6 concerns electro-
2uminescenco panels whose luminous power is increased-by filling material
having a high dielectric constant mixed into the dielectric. The Hungarian
and West German patent (1957) by~Lfinoq Patak concerns the practical
production of the SO electroluminesoence panel (Fig. 17). The technique
devised by Blem6r Nagy allows the determination of electron mobility.
It was proven in 1953 (Refo 30) that electroluminescence panels accord-
ing to Nagy-Szab6 are suited for rendering visible ultrasonic spaceso
4) Expected development of electroluminescencet 4) 1) Phenomena and ex-
planation of electroluminescencet The knowledge of new eleatroluminescent
materials may open new possibilities. Such are the so-called inter-
metallios and the hitherto scarcely known organic luminescent materials.
4) 2) Practical use for luminescent substancess According to American
sources, an efficiency of 100-240 lumene/watt is to be expected from
electroluminescent light sources. Much detail work, however, is yet to be

done for the practical development. The quickest development may be ex-
pected from light amplifiers and television panels. It is not foresee-
able as yet whether the eleetrolumineseent spaoe-ship lwnp, insensitive
to acceleration, or infrared eleotroluminesoence heliographing will gain
practical importance. There are 4 figures and 65 referenoest 3 Sovietp

Positive ser6-reacti6ns with a negative syphilis history BORGYOGY. VENER. SUE
1954, 30/1 (4-9) Tables 3
1470 persons with positive sero-reactions gave no history of syphilis, but thorough
investigation later proved syphilis to be present in 472 cases. The verification
test or Neurath gave a positive result later in 47% of the cases clinically
syphilitic. 7he cardiolipin reaction in thia same group gave 88.5% positive. In
196 patients the syphilis was not demonstrablej and other diseases were present in
13.3%, but contrary to reports in the literature., collagen diseases were not
numerous. In 802 patients (54.6%) neither syphilis nor other disease was found by
the methods at present available. Cases with no history of syphilis and positive
aerological, reactibns are difficult to interprets and require prolonged clintetl
and serological observation. Nekam - Budapest
