M.-L., Mashgiz, 1961, 74 - 77) TEXT; Work carried out by NIITVCh in welding parts with a solid cross- section by induction heating war, concentrated on producing 35 x 65, 35 x 75 and 50 x 90 flanges from grade 3 strip steel. The described induction heating method is based on the use of the "proximity" effect. The inductor is made in the form of 2 shorted loops, connected on one side by a jumper, on the other side: the Inductor is connected up to the supply source. The ends of the item to be butt-welded are placed inside the inductor loops, a certain gap being left be- tween them. As the current in the surfaces facing each other flows in opposite directions, it becomes concentrated on these surfaces, due to the proximity effect, thereby producing intense and fairly even liberation of heat at the weld between the metals. During the process of expe rime ntat-Ion, the. following main welding parameters were established: 1. The initial ga,, between the butt ends should be _3 - 4 mm. 2. The gap between the inductor and %e workpiece should ensure high efficiency of the inductor and can be taken as 4 - 5 mm. .3. The ups!t~ ting process is characterized by the speed, linear magnitude of upsetting, and upse-tting pressure, 7he upsetting speed for the examined cross-section should be >, 15 - 20 mm/sec. The linear magnitude of upsetting should be 4 - 6 mm. For grade :5 stde-I the specific upsetting pressure can be taken as 4 - 5 kg/cm2. 4. When welding 35 x 65 mm parts in 30 - 35 seo the power consumed under a hot re- gime 13 65 kw. With increasing'cross-seation the power consumption and time alao increase. V. Tarlsova. This may be accomplished by a gas mediumi formed by the dis- sociation products of --ellophane and nitrocellulose. This medium has good protectiva properties and does not cause carbonization of the metal in the heating zone. The authors conclude that the best regime for welding No. 10 and No. 20 pipes with high- frequency currents (indgetion heating) with the above -mentioned protective media is by heating to 1280-1300 C after first dressing the surfaces to be welded.
