ABSTRACT: Data are cited on laboratory investigations of initial corrosion
(C) after autoclave treatment, of the conditions under which C of
metals develops, and of the effect of the type of binder (cement
lime, or their mixture), the density of the concrete; and the
storage conditions on the process of C. For the ei.-aluation of the
intensity of corrosive attack an I I -*mark scale was developed in
which the highest mark (10) -corresponded to the condition of a
surface without traces of corrosion and the lowest ones (1 and 0)
to the conditions of the complete C of steel with the intrusion of
the C products into the concrete. It is established that the basic

On the Problem of Corrosion of Steel Reinforcement (cont,
reinforcement in autoclave -hardened lime-sand concrete is their proper density
which is achieved by hard compaction, such as by centrifuging, with the simul
taneous use of milled quicklime. In poured lime-sand autoclave concretes that
are either in-iniersed in water or are subjected to varying conditions, the C of the
reinforcement develops quite rapidly owing to the insufficient density of these
materials even when quicklime is used in their manufacture. This points to the
undesirability of the employment of reinforced articles of poured concrete under
the conditions of variable humidity of the medium without a special protective
shell. In vibration- packed sand concretes the C of the feinforcement under
certain working conditions would probably be related to the degree of density of
the article achieved. The use of milled quicklime in this case somewhat decreases
the danger of C of the reinforcement, which would allow dec'reasing the consump-
tion of cement.

Abstract: The effect of various packing methods on the strength and density of
sana-li.me autoclave concretes produced from both slaked an& ground
unslaked lime has been investigated. It was found that the packing
methods could be arranged in the following series in order of de-
creasing effectiveness: centrifugation, pressing, vibration, ramming,
and casting. The use of centrifugation is recommended in the produc-
tion of supporting elements (foundation blocks, hollow columns and

which have to meet high strength and density requirements. Vibra-

with compression strengths of 100-400 kg/cm2. Pressing is recom-
mended in the production of small objects with simple contours
(facing Blabs, flooring slabs, etc). Raimning is not recommended in
the production of sand-lime autoclave concretes.

TEXT: Partially hepatectomized rats were exposed to irradiation
(500 r) and afterwards intraperitoneally'injected with a normal
spleen cell suspension or with one taken from in vitro irradiated
~(500 to 1000 r) spleen cells. This was done to determine whether
such a treatment prevents a decrease in the liver regeneration
usually observed after irradiation. Results: Injected normal

,protective effect. The irradiated spleen cell suspension did not
produce such a protective effect. Injected spleen cell
suspension did not stimulate the liver regeneration in rats,
although such stimulation was observed in mice. This divergence

Abstract: [Authors' Hungarian summary] Chemical estrogen determination
on urine is complex and lengthy because chromogenic materials, similar
in physical and chemical properties to the estrogens, interfere in the
quantitative analysis and may be separated from the estrogens only with
difficulties. The authors compared the hydrolytic, extractive and puri-
fication procedures described in the literature, in order to find the
most suitable method for the exclusion of contaminating chromogens.
They find that there is no fully satisfactory such method as yet but
that enzymic hydrolysis, washing of the ether extract with Brown's so-
lution, neutralization of the alkaline extract before shaking with ether,
separation of the second ether extract into weakly and strongly pheno c

ABSTRACT: This Author's Certificate introduces a multistage high-vacuum diffusion
pump which contains a housing with a cooling jacket, distributor nozzles placed in
sequence along the height of the pump, a condenser for the working fluid and a
receiver for the condensed vapor made In the form of a small annular tank. The
maximum vacuum is increased by using an independent condenser and collector (hydro-
seal) in each stage of the pumps These units hermetically isolate (with respect
to the working fluid) one stage of the pump from the succeeding (higher pressure).
