The author found that among 4.235 mastoid diseases 706 (16.675) were mucosus or
mucosus-like. Among acute infectious diseases mucosus otitis has been most
frequently associated with the dysenteriae (in 21.4%), strictly followed by per-
tussis (20.476). the most infrequent cases being those due to *morbilli (only 10.2%).
These diagnoses have been made exclusively on clinical grounds (first in the acute
stage, then during gradual granulation, etc.). It appears from the bacteriological,
preparation of the operative matter (pus) that the author has succeeded in revealing
Str.haemolyticus in 31.3% cases and in very frequent cases he cultivated Pseudo-
monas aeruginosa and the proteus especially during the penicillin-era. After
operation, in order to avoid the acute otitis media. he performed antrurn perfu-

The mastoid processes of 80 infants and young children who had died of acute in-
fectious diseases months or years after the operation, were examined. The cavity
was inspected macroscopically and its contents were examined microscopically. In
46% the mastoid processes were normal, a small quantity of exudate was observed
in 360,6 and in 17.51. there were polypous proli 1e rations. Carieq of recurring oto-
antritts are possibly due to the latter. Smears were made of the exudate. in which
degenerated leucocytes, lymphocytes. plasma cells and mononuclear cells were

infection of the ear and accessory sinuses occurs as a complication of dysentery in
infancy only. The condition should be suspected where an infant has vomiting,
pyrexis or deterioration In general condition out of proportion to the bowel sym-
ptoms. Pus from ear or sinuses was sterile in 53 out of 135 cases, 66 gave
,,pseadomonas or proteus or both. In no came were dysentery organisms found.

The appearance of the tympanum in acute contagious dis-

Review of otoscopical findings in 1,344 infants and young children affected with
otitis and suffering from acute infectious diseases. The patients are classified
according to their principal diseases and the degree of the affection. A study was
made of the tympanums of 561 patients with dysentery, 284 with pertussis, 267
with measles and 232 with scarlatina, 8 categories are distinguished. In 46% of
the cases examined. the picture of the tympanum revealed genuine otitie. Apart
from the well-known pathological factors. the peculiar pictures of the tym1pianum
are explained by the age of the patients, the permanent posture of the body. th
natornical and immune -biological conditions. as well as by the antibiotics 'us d

The bacteriological examination of 285 tympanic cavity exudateli in 174 sufferers
from whooping cough is reported. Half of the patients were infants. In 50% of
cases Ps. ucruginosa and Proteus were cultured, in VA Each. coli, and 9% of the
secretions were sterile. The bacterial flora of the buccal secretion and of the
tympanic cavity did nut correspond. Otological complications were observed in
19 out of 34 autopsies of whooping cough cases. Half cf these were babies younger
than 6 months. Bronchopneumonias were found in 30 out of the 34 fatal cases;
next in frequency were the otological complications. ( X1, 4. 5, 7)

The effect of pressure in the antrum and in the tympanic membrane was measured
In the cadavers of 47 infants and young children. In decortication of the dura or in
isolated decortication of the sinus the perfusion fluid that had been injected into
the antrum did not press against the cranial cavity but between the retroauricular
soft tissues. The exposed dura was only elevated by the injected fluid when the
dura of the median and posterior scala was exposed Gver an uninterrupted large
area. When the intratympanic pressure was increased and the pharyngeal opening
of the tube closed, intact tympanic membranes ruptured at a pressure of 200-600
mm. of mercury. In the presence of infiltrated tympanic membranes an intra-
tympanic pressure of 1672 mm. Hg (2.2 atm.) was measured. The tympanic mem-
brane of premature and new-born children was ruptured at a lower pressure. In
each case, the ruptures were radial. The harmlessness of antral. perfusion is
clear from these results.

development of the Sudeck syndrome is discussed. The Lmportance of pro-
phylaxis is emphasized. in order to obtain earlv diagno3la and to control
the treatment objectively, the importance of oacillometry and of the record.
Ing of skin temperature is emphasized in addition to repeated radiograms.
As both tests are simple and easy to perform, their introduction in out-
patient services Is recompended. In differential diagnosis, the presence
of a malignancy or tuberculotic bone chanSes should always be considered -
and excluded. A complex and thorough orthopaofte, medical and neurological

for rolled profile steel give definitions of surface finish
which differ from the definitions given in rOCT 2789-51- If
the surface finish indications were coordinated, there would
be no need for additional machining of various axles, studs,
bushes and shafts, which means up to 30% economy in steel-
weight for some parts and a simultaneous- decrease in cost.

Tasks in the Automation of New Thermal Irlower Stations
requirements, for example, for operation at no-load,
Real progress will only be made if the requirements of
complete automation are given prominence. This will
necessarily influence the design of the main and
auxiliary equipment. It must not be assumed that new
large sets will operate only on base load, be-ause in
the future such sets will have to cover the main load
of the power systems. Most control e-ouipment is
electronic and although this type of equipment has
numerous advantages some instruments are unreliable,
particularly polarised relays, magnetic starters and
differential manometers. in designing automatic
equipment it is desirable to separate the supervisory
and the control functions of the instruments, Their
construction can then be simplified, There is need
for a greater variety of conlrol equipment. However,
the main hindrance to further advance is the absence
of organised work on the integrated problem as a whole,

Abstract A directive of the Goverment called for the production of hay and
the creation of pasture lands by sowing seed in oases and using ir-
rigation from artesian wells. An account is given of the work of the
Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR in cooperation with a collective
farm in their efforts to implement the Government's directive.
