Por over 160 yeara it has been the main source of raw.material for the fuel and metallurgical industries. The output of coal was 30.9 million tons in 1926, and rose to 94.3 million tons in 1940. This was achieved by scientific researchp which revealed that the coal field around the Donets river - the old Donbass, was much more extensive, Aeading to the exploration of the surrounding areas, The Big Donbass now covers the territory between the Sallskiye steppes in the east, the Drapr valley in tine west, the Azov region granite massif in the south and Sumskaya Pblast In the north. The coal deposits are so extensive that the output is expected to reach 162.3 million tons in 1957 and to grow still higher after another IL50 coal mines will have been developed as stipulated by the 6th five-year plan. Arkhangellskiy (Ref. 1) and other investigators, of which the most detailed is the chart by E.r. Potiadi (Ref. 15) are mostly obsolete and do not correspond to the Dresent level of the geologico-geophysical knowledge of the Ukraine terri- tory. Making use of charts compiled by P.A. Rudenko, G.M. G. ------------- TITLE: Geological Movements and Their Origin PERIODICAL: Geologichnyy zhurnal, 1960, Vol. 20, No. 1, PP. 14-16 TEXT: The text to be abstracted (PP. 14-16) is a Russian summary of the author's paper written in Ukrainian (PP. 3-14). The author discusses the geological movements as the expression of existence of the material system of the earth. The author is of the opinion that the existing classifications of these movements are not satisfactory from the physical and philosophical viewpoint. The most important features of the structure of the globe are the concentric arrangement of geospheres. They are characterized by the speci- fic forms of coordinated simple movements which are the basis of higher forms of movements. Geological movements are a sequence of movements of the material system of the earth. The interrelations between the individual geological movements are studied in terms of the genetic and the structu- ral point of view. The author discusses the forms of development of the earth's mass thus solving the problem of the form of the geological move- Card 1/4 Geological Movements and Their Origin S/008/60/020/001/001/001 B01 6 /B067 ments. The structural analysis of the movements explains the interrelations between the displacements causing the tectonic structures. It also reflects the structure of the litosphere as a whole. The coordination of the forms of geological movements is established on the basis of the historical-ge- netical and structural characteristics. The system is divided into a) fun- damental forms b) secondary, and c) accompanying forms. The individual stage of this succession are 1) geocosmic movements - simple mechanical displacements; 2) geotectonic - more complex mechanical and physical move- ments to wLch subtectonic movements of plastic masses are bound; 3) move- ments of gravitation - complex mechanical displacements and physicp-chemi- cal processes 4) geochemical - very complex movements of matter penetra- ting the whole mass of the outer layers of the globe. Their character and direction differ according to the composition of the state of the mineral mass. In the zone of interaction between solid, liquid, and gaseous layers of the earth the geochemical movements form a transition stage towards the biological movements - the highest form of movements. According to the depth of the uppermost geosphere the geological movements are divided as follows: bathytectonics at the gr~eatest depths. Here polar compression and equatorial extension predominate; hypotectonics at medium depths, and epi- Card 2/4 Geological Movements and Their Origin S/008/60/020/001/001/001 13016/B067 tectonics in the outer layers. In the zone of hypotectonics or the terres- trial crust uplifting and depression with the following accompanying move- ments are the mostfrequent forms: sedimentation, lithification, metamor- phism, magma formation, and subtectonic movements caused by depression: pe- netration of intrusives, volcanism, halogen tectonics, movement of the ther- mal solutions, and others. The author assumes magma formation as one of the forms of tectonic movements which constitutes a synthesis of the movement of geosynclinal sedimentary masses during depression. Contradictory to many other scientists who regard such phenomena as differentiation of matter, radiogenic heat, isostasy, and others as the reason of tectonic formations, the author explains them only as specific forms of geological movement. Epitectonics is the region of gravitational movements. It is characterized by a complete qualitative transformation of matter which becomes manifest by the weathered crust, denudation, and sedimentation. The chronological and spatial orientation of movements is determined by the tectonic relief and the tectonic movements. The intensity and the character of epitectonics depend on the climate which in turn constitutes one of the forms of move- ments of the atmosphere. The method involves measurement of the tangent of the phase lag angle (between the displacement and the velocity of the oscillatory system)#' The method permits deter- mining the intensity of the dissipated energy, without prior know- ledge of any specific dissipation law. It is noted that the quanti- tative determination of internal friction is important for plastic materials. The general case is considered) the damped oscillations being described by the equation X = cp(t) sin wt. (6) Al"ter a substitutiont one obtains the expression for the velocity .Card 1/3 S/198/62/008/003/007/008 Direct method of determining the ... By inte-ration, one obtains the equation fbr 0 the amplitude Y(t) of damped oscillations. Hence ono obtains the, following general formula for the damping factor t tg 0(t) dt (13) h t where E tg G(t)dt is.the area bounded by the coordinate axes tg 0 0 and-t, 9-nd by the curve which describes the variation of tg 0(t). Further, an expreaaion is derived for the internal resistance (fl+'(I_(,))tg26]sin(ot+2o)tgOcoso)t), (16) F (t) = (p (0) mrwe 11 where y(O) is the initial value of the amplitude; w the frequency Card 2/3 I GALAKA, P,I, [HalakT,_,P,,I.l (Kiyev); BOI~D~,', i'VTO, A~A, (KiYev) . - - Dissipation properties of plastics. 7 no.4:451-454 v6l. TITLE: A dynamic (frequency) method for determining the modulus of elasticity of glassy plastics PERIODICAL; AA'ademiya nauk Ukrayins1koyi RSR. Dopovidip no. 9, 1962, 1184 - 1186 T1,JXT: The authQr finds that the usual method of determining E by means of flexural vibrations is not accurate because the stressed state of the specimen is not homogeneous. He,proposes that E should be determined by means of longitudinal vibrations of a system of one de ee of freedon, with the natural frequency. The latter is W V m , where m is the mass of the vibrating load and c =.BF/lt = F7 7 so that E = w2ml/F. The author.obtained by this method for the glassy plastic Al' - WAG-40 E = i.og x jo5 kg/cm2.
