ABSTRACT: Description of an experimental investigation on pine spe-:i-
mens with a tangential arrangement of the annual rings on a
cross section having dimensions of lOxIO0 mm. The speci-
mens were up to 1140 mm long; the length of the working por-
tion was 400 mm. The moisture con nt of the wood was
11 - 15 O/o, its dens ity 0. 44 - 0. 61 g/cm The trans ition f rom the
working portion to the gripping portions was accomplished by
means of faired increases in thickness. The strain rate during
the tests was 2 mm/min. The specimens were weakened by
means of a 5- to 60-mm diameter circular hole. The tests

longitudinal cracks tangent to the weakening contour, which had been pre-
viously revealed by Yu. M. Ivanov and Ye. L. Rozen. It is established that
the force P corresponding to the incipient formation of the first fissure
decreases by almost 750yo as the diameter of the hole is increased from 5 to
50 mm, and that in the hole-diarneter (d) range ~rorn 15 to 60 mm the
following relationship holds true: P - (946, 000/d ) + 1040. The stress
corresponding to that P must be considered as the strength characteristic
of the weakened element; the rupture strength is not a suitable criterion,
since it varies over a wide range of values (the lowest of which coincides,
in fact, with that corresponding to P). The computed value of this load
should be used in limiting-state calculations and in the determination of
the stresses in wooden elements subjected to tensile loads wherein reduc-
tion coefficients from 1. 00 to 0. 43 should be employed to account for cir-
cular holes having diameters from 15 to 400/o of the width of the element.

TEXT; The author studies the elastic equilibrium of an orthotropic strip of vddth
2 h,,.o'L infinite and finite length) loaded by-nori-iial stresses distributed uniformly
on boundary portions symmetrical with respect to the axis of the strip, xe For an
infinite stri-o with load repeated periodically through equal intervals.2 1, a solu-
tion is deriv;d with the help of the Imown stress function; this is in the form of
a series contaixdng the cosines of the. argument kpix/l, -where k = 1~, 2, 3>... (See
Lekhnitskiy, S. G., "Isotropic plates, Moscow) Gostekhizdat, .1957, Section 17).
For a band of finite length I and 2 1 the author derives an exact (as co-a-
,oared with the classical one) solution: Ito the solution for the infinite strip,
strictly satisfying the conditions on aides y ox plus or minus h, is addad a solution
corresponding to the stress function in the form of a series containing the cosines

The coefficients of the second series are.so determined that precisely the
conditions ol lencrth 2 h are satisfied on the perpendicular sides. The final ex-
pressions for the stresses.now will not strictly satisfy the conditions on the lon-
gitudinal slized y = plus or minus h; the author however, considers that under the
circumstances.in question tbis is not importanti, He gives a number of graphics for
tbe stress distributiox, on the longitudinal and transverse aections for a different
disposition of the stressed portions for 1 = 2 h and 1 = 4 h, constracted for mater-
ial of pinew)od.; certain of these are compared vith graphics for stress distribution
in an isotrople strip of the same aimensions. S. G. Lekhnitskiye

Abstract Elaborate epidemiological observations were conducted for
a period of 2 years on 187 bacterial carriers, found in
investigating healthy individuals who had contact with
gastro-intestinal patients, as well as workers in food in-
dustries and persons newly arrived from other areas.
Among then 59.8% bacterial carriers were found from con-
tact, 35.8% from, newly arrived individuals, and 3.2% from
food vorkers. 7he discovered bacterial carriers were cli-
rected to a health station, where inoculability of contact

TEXT: in order to i4ncrease the reliability of control equipment
situated between a pick-up and the operating,device, a secondary
electrical control circuit is provided in addition to the main cir4,--
cuit. In the case of faults of any conduct*or, the equipment is
switched-off. In addition, internal faults of the'equipment put in
to operation a separate internal sensing element in the circuit of
which there is a relay which disconnects the feed of the grid of ali
6lectron valve. The latter disconnects the whole equipment. In the..~_
circuit-of the controlled element there is a device sensitive to
thermal overload of the equipment. When the permissible v~-lue of

ABSTRACT: A study has been made of the relationship between solar calcium flocculae and
disturbances in the earth's atmosphere for a period of solar activity when 65 < R < 125,
.where R is the smoothed sunspot number. Synoptic charts for solar rotations 1291-1299,
prepared at the Meudon Observatory, were used, together with atmospheric pressure data
for Tbilisi, Volgograd and Arkhangellsk. The superposed epochs method was used for
determining the relationship between disturbances in the lower atmosphere and corpuscular
streams associated with calcium flocculae. Forty-six flocculae observed during March-
November 1950 were used. The number of flocculae crossing the central meridian with

solar central meridian, Calcium flocculae determine the boundaAes of active regions.
Therefore, corpuscular streams emanating from active regions are responsible for the ra-
1 current geomagnetic disturbances causing disturbances in the earth's atmosphere. "The

ABSTRACT: T.~e latitude dependence of atmospheric disturbances has
been detected from a study of data. in addition to that used previously
(B. D. Fohenko, Astron. ah., v. 39, 833, 1962). It is found that the
amplitude of atmospheric disturbances increases with geomagnetic
latitude. Radio sounding data show that the disturbance occurs in the
atmosphere. Orig. art. has: 4 figures and 1 table.

ABSTRACT: Quasi-stationary corpuscular fluxes emanating from active regions during
the period of 1951 to 1953 are analyzed. Chromospheric flares recorded at several
Arctic stations at different geomagnetic latitudesare plotted diagramatically.
Analysis of the results indicates that the corpuscular streams produce a pressure
increase, while the subrelativistic proton streams from chromospheric flares
produce pressure decreases at the polar caps. It is noted that the amplitude
decrease of atmospheric disturbances with decreasing geomagnetic latitude can be.
a source of additional atmospheric circulation. This assumption is borne out by
analysis of chromospheric flares of 1956-1960. A more detailed discussion of all
