Abstract I The article deals with experiments conducted in order to obtain a glass
that could be,produced.in large quantitibs, be cheap, and still be suit-
able for chemical laboratory utensils. Such glass is intended to be re-
sistant to heat-and a6ids. The presence of boric anhydride in glass as
an ingredient is found to improve its quality. From experimentation a
glass designated as No 1 29 was.produced and a comparison of its proper-
ties with the No., 23 (formerly the beW is found to put it in first place.

ABSTRACT: Reference is mde to the empirical norms in use for air supply
in cooling parts of glass furnaces to prevent etching away of
the upper bars. The system based on these norms is found to be
very complicated. A new centralized system is described and
illustrated by three sketches. In sketch 1 1, e. and 4 are
centrifugal fans (3 is a centrifugal fan placed on the floor

TITLE: The Furnace Tank Air Cooling Must Be Intensified (Usilit,
vozdushnoye okhlazhdeniye basseyna pechey)
PERIODICAL: Steklo i keramika, 1958, Nr 12, pp 23 - 23 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: Melting processes must be intensified in order to
increase glass production. The only solution is to in-
crease melting temperatures. Until lately, melting
temperatures were not increased in glass factories,
in order to prevent a premature destruction of furnace
linings. . Tests'showed, however, that such a destruction
can be efficiently prevented by air cooling of the
refractory tank bricks. In the USA, tank linings - are
air cooled at the level of the glass mass surface at a
100 mm uater-column pressure. Foi each 1 m length of the
cooled glass beam, an air quantity of 4000 m3 per hour
is required. In Soviet projects, air consumption
calculations call for 1400-1500 m3 per hour theoretically,
which practically me'ans about 1000 M3 per hour and
Card 1/2 represents only one quarter of the air quantity used
The Furnace Tank Air Cooling Must Be Intensified SOV/72-58-12-6/23
in the USA. Air consumDtion in Soviet furnaces should
be made to conform to foreign standards. Air cooling
must be introduced not earlier than 2-3 months after
the furnace has been put into operation and should
be directed to the glass beam spots, where destruction
is heaviest. This can be effected by means of an air
cooling system worked out by the proyektno-konstruk-
torskoye byuro Instituta stekla (Planning - and
Design . Office of the Glass Institute). By the
introduction of this system, melting temperatures are
allowed to Increase to 1500-15200, also with refractories
used at present, and furnace campaign as well as output
are thus increased. The board of editors further states
that besides intensifying air cooling, also the heat
stability of tank refractories should be increased.

ABSTRACT: This article presents the results of experimental investigations of the effective-
ness of sound-absorbing insulations. in six reverberation chambers, 100 to 300 cubic meters
incapacity. The chambers were selected on the basis of the condition established by
V. V. Furdayev (Snizheniye shuma pri akusticheskoy obrabotke shumnukh pomeshcheniy.
Akust. zh., 1965, 11, 4, 481-486.) on achieving a maximum additional noise level reduction
in a building after acoustic insulation of its surfaces. The conclusions reached after a
comparison of the results obtained are presented. A reduction in the noise level in a building
after acoustic Insulation of its surfaces may exceed the value calculated on the basis of known
formulas of the statistical theory of architectural acoustics. An optimal effect is achieved
when the process of reverberation (which, prior to the insulation of the building, did not differ
substantially from the exponential) as a result of the insulation ceases to follow the

exponential law. The value of the additional redaction of the noise level depends on the method
used for placing the insulating material: when it Is concentrated this value is high. The shape
and the capacity of the building affect the magnitude of the additional reduction of the noise
level. In low buildings the effect is greater than in tall buildings. In large capacity buildings
an additional reduction of the noise level depends not only on the quantity of the sound-
absorbing material but also on the magnitude of the remaining unin ulated surface. The author

sources of nitrogen and carbohydrate nutrition. The
fungus grew very slowly on solutions with mineral nitro-
gen sources, a thin cobweb-like film appearing in 10-14
days. Wort, peptone and maize extract are good sources
of nitrogen, while nitrogen-containing substances in pea
and yeast extract, alanin, asparagin and glycocol are
the poorest. The best sources of carbon are.glucose and
mannite. The optimum proportions of peptone and glucose

in a solution are 0.5 and 3% respectively. Submerged
cultivation greatly increases the rate of growth of
the fungus. In wort, the first phase, characterized
by intensive nitrogen consumption and the accumulation
of a mass of thin poorly septicized mycelium, lasts 15
days in surface cultures, and 40 hours in submerged
cultures. The second phase, characterized by the acidi!-
fication of the solution and a relatively slight increa-
se in the mycelium mass and subsequent autolysis, takes
place over 40 dyas and 50-60 hours, respectively.
A substantial crop of mycelium is obtained in submerged
cultures in 80 to 90 hours, while the process takes 60
to 70 days in surface cultures.

Abst A description is given of a portable laboratory installa-
tion for the subsurface cultivation of bacteria. Curves
are plotted for the growth of Sonne and Flexner bacteria
under conditions of immersion. The agglutinability of
immersed cultures was found to be considerably higher
than that of the orip~nal strains- 3-4 hour cultures
had the highest agglutinability, which subsequently
decreased.

ABSTRAM A method for manufacturing double layer steel XhIONIOT pipes with contina
uoue longitudinal dbannels between the layers was developed. Two methods for the
production of chmmelt on the outer surface of the inner pipe were inveetigated--a
rolling method and a cutting method. A schematio of the experimental installation is
presented (see Fig. 1). It was found that both methods yielded pipes with smooth
surfaces and uniform inner channels between the layers. The overall rate of pipe
production, employing the catting or drawing methodl w" 200 maters/hour. Double

ABSTRACT: Matrix-algebra methods are used to determine the propagation
of flexurar-waves n structures (wagons, airplanes, ships, etc.) con-
_,~ILe Is- eriodically crossed by obstacles. It is assumed
sisting of _I
that the width of contact between the obstacle (stiffening member) and
the plate is small compared with the wavelength in the plate, so that
the flexural waves can be regarded as being normally incident on the
obstacle. The obstacles are characterized by their force and moment
impedances. The form of the matrix of transmission of a wave through
one obstacle is determined.~ A connection is established between the
transmission and reflection coefficients and the coefficients of the

matrix of transition through n obstacl es. The transmission coefficient
is calculated for a flexural wave passing through two obstacles with
moment impedance N. A family of diagrams is presented, characterizing
the dependence of the coefficient of transmission of the frequency for
different values of the dimensionless moment impedance. Orig. art.

TEXT: The authors observed ion cyclotron resonance for H+ and He+ ions in
H20 and lie vapors under a pressure of 7 - 10-2 mm Hg. The ratio of the cyclotron
frequency of these ions to the resonance frequency observed in the experiment
amounted-to 1.9 and 2.9 for the e and He+ ions, respectively. In a magnetic
field with an ion cyclotron frequency twice as great as the oscillation frequency
of the HF field, parametric Ion resonance was observed for the indicated ions.

TEXT: In this review paper the characteristic features of electrically
stimulated currents excited by light of different wavelengths are
discussed. The discussion is based on data published between 1920 and
1960 covering the following subjects: (1) experimental investigation of
the stimulation process; (2) excitation of.s. current which is electrically
stimulated by light of a wavelength to the impurity absorption rangef
(3) excitation of a current which is electrically stimulated by light of
.wavelength corresponding to the fundamental absorption range; (4)'ef.lect
of infrared radiation and of high voltage applied to the crystal on the
electrically stimulated current; (5) conduction mechanism in CdS due to
excitation by light of the above mentioned wavelengths, and comparison

between theoretical and experimental data. A theory is developed for
explaining the electrically stimulated currents which are.excited by light
having the frequency of the impurity absorption range. In this theory,
electrons are assumed to be raised from the traps to the conduction band
by an electric fi2ld. The electrically stimulated currents excited by
light having the frequency of the fundamental absorption range are
explained by the formation of a positive space charge (holes) around the
cathode if the anode is irradiated. The electrically stimulated currents
excited by irradiation with IR light are explained by %he release of
electrons from traps and of holes from activator levela. It is assumed
that even weak electric fields (- 1000 v/cm) raise a considerable number
of electrons from the traps to the conduction band. There are 24 figures
and I table.
