TITLEs Effect of deformation by sliding and twinning on the rate of dissolving of zinc single crystals in hydroahloric ae4d PERIODICALs Zhurnal P:rikladnoy Khimii, v 34, no 2, 1961, 272-277 TEM The effect of the orientation angle and deformation by sliding or twinning of zinc single crystals on the dynar3i,33 of the dissolving rate in 1 M RCI soluticns was in7astigated. This prob2em is of interest since zinc and zina alloy artioles are manufactured using various types of plastic deformation, and corrosion resistance is effected by changes in the crystal- line state. Corrosion of zinc polycrystals was investigated by several authors, but only Ye.M. Zaretskiy (Ref 2t ZhPD., 24, 5-8, 482 (1951), and Ref 31 ZhPKh, 24, 2, 619 (1951)) studied the effect of deformation on corrosion. Zinc single crystals were investigated already by M. Straumainis Card 1/6 25384 S/080/61/034/002/003/025 Effect of deformation A057/A!129 (Ref 10a Z. phys. ah., 147, 16 T (1930)) and N.S. Akhmetovi, and G.S ub .9 11 4. Vozdvizhenskiy (Ref ils ZhPKh, 29, 8, 1196 (10,56)) and different sol -1 ty of crystal faces in hydro~3hioric acid solutions was observed, but the effeat of plastic defcrmation on the corrosion rate of the single crystals was not studied. Zinc single crystals investigated in the present work were prepared by V.D. Kmetsov's method)~Ref 12A "Fftika 41-verdogo tela"("Solid State Physias") Tamak, 1, 232 (1937 - Orientation of single orystals was determined by the method of thermal electramotive force (t.e.m.f.) described by N.A. Karelin (Ref 13a "Yetod'Acheakily abornIk"' (I'Methedlial sollection") ChGFIq Chelyabinsk (1953)), and based on P.V. Bridgman~s observation that t.e.m.f. is a linear funotion of cos2oL(ut- angle between the principal crystallographia axis and the geometrical axis of the single crystal). The t.e.m.f. was measured in couple with copper and Ck was determined graphicallyj or by the formula E) - 0-50 - 1.82 0082 (2), i.e., the orientation of the single orysta~ was thus determinel~ After determination of the orientation, the kinetics of dissolution was studied in 1 X HC1 solution. The first series of experiments concerning the affect of d on the dissolving rate in non-deformed crystals gave results in agreement with Card 2/6 25384 S/080/61/034/002/003/025 Effect of deformation A057/1129 those published by M. Straumainis (Ref 10). in a seac-nd series deformed single crystals ware investigated by sliding and twinning, and the ccrroded crystals were photographed in polarized light (Fig 6. 8). The obtained results demonstrate that deformation by sliding increases the dissolving rate. Between the sliding faces some "weak" segment-2 were formed and were strongly corroadd. Deformation by twinning increases also the dissolving rate. Corrosion occurs in the zinc twins formed (in Fig 8 the deep boals of twins are well visible) whiih have a higher jhemiaall a.,tivity not only in the partition -~f the initial stra.411are and the folmed tr-jn,, but aLainlly in the bulk --1 the latter. SI-Inoe twins formed by deformation are less corrosion resistant and appear after mechanical treatmen-~s of zinn cz zin--~ alloy artinles, thermal treatment should log carried cut, to destroy the twins formed by me-.hanioal processing. Conditicns for the thermal. aft9r- treatment should be investigated on zinc single c-rystala, since these are more suitable than polycrystals fcr this purpose. In.
