the fine-grained lacustrine sediments. The value of the insects is
enhanced by the fact that they are delicate indicators of changes in
the ecological environment. The fresh-water pelecypod fauna may be
traced over great distances in sediments of synchronous basins.
Fresh-water pelecypods are very sensitive to changes in the external
environment and may be of considerable use in -paleogeographic
investigations. More detailed study of this group is needed.
Ostracods are also important, many of them having a narrow vertical
range and showing insignificant variations horizontally in different
types of rock. Phyllopods, living in brackish-water and fresh-Vister
reservoirs, may also be useful for correlation and age determination
of strata. Gastropods and fish have not yet been studied sufficiently.
The author notes that a stratigraphic boundary should be established
by the appearance of a group of new, persistent forms. In the
Karaganda basin, where the pelecypods, brachiopods, phyllopods,
ostracods, and flora were studied, emphasis is placed on the value
of composite investigations when making stratigraphic and facies
analyses.

results on amphibia, fish, and apparently also on
aawmals. However, the resultem were con-

reason data on birds, which are also higher

TEXT8 The authors describe the preliminary results of measurements
of radiowave absorption by the ionosphere carried out from December. 1958
To March, 1959 in the region of the Loparskaya station (68038'n.lat.,
33022'e.long.). The measurements were carried out by means of the impulse
aounding method at 2.2 Me frequency and the recording of the intensity off
oosmic radio noise at 31 Me frequency. It is confirmed that the aurora!
effe-l-, is connected with an increase in absorption. Cases of rise of ab-
sorption were noted incident to vertical propagation of radiowaves al-

ABSTRACT: Two types of paste for protecting hands of workers handling substances and
materials harmful to the skin have been developed by the Laboratory of Coatings
"Ylospromproyekt" (Laboratoriya pokrytiy "Mospromproyekt"). Paste No. 1 is based on
kaolin, glycerine, soap, and water; paste No. 2 is made up of casein glue, glycerine,
ammonia, alcohol, and water. The amounts and types of these materials are given in
detail, the methods for their production are described, and their application to and
removal from workers' hands are'explained. The pastes may be made more visible by the
addition of a nonagressive pigment. The third paste) reconmended by the institute of
Hygiene and Occupational Diseases A10, im. Obukh (Institut 8-igiyeny truda i
profzabolevaniy AIW) for work with petrochemicals and several solvents is free of
alcohol. It consists of methyl cellulose, glycerine, kaolin, talcum, and water in
specified proportions. A table shows the amount of ingredients of the first two

The optical isomers of promethazine have been investigated its to toxicity-

histaminic activity and anaeathesia-potentiating effect. The toxicity of DL-prome-
thazine was found to be identical with that of the D and L itsomers. The same was
true for the antihistaminic action (guinea-pig Intestine. blood pressure or the cat
and histamine-induced asthma of the guinea-pig) as well as for the anaesthesia-.
potentiating effect. Accordingly. a difference must exist between the antihistaminic
activity of the structural Isomers of promethazine (iso promethazine) described by
others and that of the optical isomers investigated in this study.

Abstract [Authors;,English summary, modified]: Imi.pramine in intravenous
doses of 4 to 6 m kg inhibited the disturbance of rhythm caused by
aconitine and calcium chloride. The bradjeardia elicited by pretreat-
ment with reserpine could be antagonized in 65% of the cases by the
intravenous injection of 4 mg/kg of imipramine. The drug, however, had
no ialuence on the bradyeardia caused by bretylium tosylato and. in-
creased the negative chronotropic effect of guAuiethidine.

BOL-148, UML-491 and dihydroargotamine on mescaline stereotypia and exci-
tation have been studied in mice. Inhibition of the scratch reflex
evoked by mescaline was strongest with LSD-25. The latter also completel;y,
blocked the stimiLlating effect of mescaline, and the action of BOL-148
was the same, but the other two compounds were imffective. The highest

The properties desired by the authors were. found most favorable in a -
Methophenazine isomer [3-chloro-lo-p-[4'-(p'-hydroxyethyll,-piparazinyl-l')-
propjlphenthi4'zine-3",4",5"-trimethoxybenzoate3. Having a slight sedative
effect only'and almost no effect on the autonomic nervous system,
Isomethophenazine can be considered ~ -a.phenthiazine derivative with a
potential for selective coronary dilatatory action. Some j*lymethoxy#On-
thiazine derivatives, and some phenthiazine derivatives in combination
with glucose or with sugar alcohols were also prepared in the course of

The authors carried out Intra-arterial administration of oxvgen in 20 Patients
with impairment of the arterial supply in the lower extremities. The following
affections were involved in this series: endarteritis obliterans (S cases), arterio-
sclerosis obliterans (8 cases), arteriospasmus chronkus (1 case) and ulcus
cruris (6 cases), The oxygen war, administered with the aid of an apparatus,
designed by the authors themselves. A marked improvement has been obtained
in 9 cases - surface temperature was raised, pain in the limb disappeared and
the walking index increased. Slight relief was noted in 6 patients, no i M-prove-
ment in 5 cases. Unsatisfactory results were observed in subjects with advanced
disease process, in whom necrosis occurred and surgery had to be resorted to.
On the basis of personal observations the conclusion is reached that the mechan-
ism of a prolonged vasodilatation following intra-arterial administration of oxygen
was of reflex nature. The experience of the authors is that intra-arterial admin-
istration of oxygen is a safe procedure for the patient and may prove to be suc-
