Abstract In experiments on rabbits largaktil changed in a variety of
ways the intensity and character of epileptoid attacks., in-
duced by cardiasol, pyramidon, and atabixine, while it exerted
no substantial influence on the attack, induced by picrotoxin.
The authors explained this by the variety in the pathogenesis
of the attacks. Since the anticonvulsive actior of largaktil
manifests itself chiefly in the philogenetic inhibitions of
the very youngest divisions of the central nervous system, the
lack of largaktil effect on the picrotoxin induced attack is
explained hypothetically by the wide range and the peculiar
intensity of picrotoxin action on the central nervous system.

Abstract [authors' Russian and English summaries, modified]: On the basilL ni
E -cases observed in Bulgaria (one case dcscribed in detail), three successive
stages of the clinical picture of childhood acute alcohol encephalopatby are
diocusGed: the acu~,,~ stage of prolonged alcohol coma; th6 transitory stagr- fol-
lowing recovery from coma; and the end stage of epilepsy and mental deterinr-
ation. The coma develops dramatically with initial convulsions (decerebratloo
state) and autonomic phenomena, or with initial epileptic seizures. In 3 cacc--
the decerebration rigidity was permanent and grave. Two of these cased
in death and shoved bilateral symmetrical necrosis of the putamen. In
cases the decerebration phenomena occurred as attacks. Only in one case (the
youngest patient (I year and 7 months old) the decerebration rigidity vas not
manifest and replaced by an athetous- and torsiod.ystonic syndrome combine(i

neurological and psychotic phenomena appeared: at'%axia, hyperkyneses (rzyoclonia
"bows," ballism), mild spastic and flaccid pareses, visual agnosia, deliziouc
states and cerzain decomposition of speech. in the -:n--l state, severe and
permanent disturbances of the bioelectrical activity were observed, involving
the reticular formation ar4 clinically manifest as epilepsy, almost inacessible,
to treatment. Often a more or less manifest deterioration of the child's per-
sonality was found, with symptoms of euphoria and puerilism, intellectual -re-
tardation and, in some cases, irreversible dementia. Eight Bulgarian

TEXT: The stability of closed circular cylindrical shells within and
above the limit of elasticity of A16T (D16T) duralumin was studied in
30 specimens subjected to axial compression. The length L was double the
radius R of the wall center. R/h, where h is the wall strength, varied
between 25 and 135. The specimens were divided into three groups. In
the first one, R/h ranged between 80 and 130. The stability of the
relevant specimens, which buckle within the limits of elasticity, is lost
abruptly and rhombic indentations are formed. R/h of the second group
ranged between 35 and 80. In this group, the compressive stress at the
moment of buckling was above the elastic limit of the material. The
stability of the shells is destroyed by the abrupt formation of
indentations. The third group consists of shells with R/h between 25 and

35. The stability in these shells is destroyed by the development of a
continuous ring-shaped bulge. A theoretical study of the results shows
that the effect of the geometric nonlinearity, which is of prime import
in the elastic stability of shells, gradually becomes smoothed out of
range shell deformation. As plastic deformatiom in the plastic region
develop, asymmetric bulgings become axiaymmetrical. The stability of
thick shells is calculated by a small-scale examination of the bulging.

solutions is also presented. The testing of aluminum4glloy specimens (180 mm in
diameter, 180 mm long, 0.5 mm wall thickness) by using various paths of loading
(the sequence in applying the compressive force and internal pressure),in elastic
and plastic regions is described in detail. In tests beyond the elastic limit, the
effect of the loading path in the prebuckling state on the magnitude of the buckling
load was estimated. The obtained experimental data are given.in a table and are

compared in diagrams with theoretical values of the buckling stresses calculated by
using the solutions by B. 0. Almroth and D. O.-Brush (for the elastic region) and
,by E. 1. Grigolyuk (for the plastic region). The experimental data make clear the
very weak effect of the path of loading on the magnitude of the.buckling load. The
experimental values of the buckling stress are lower than the analytical ones in both
elastic and plastic regions. It was ascertained that at the beginning, the buckling
stress grows with increasing internal pressure and reaches its maximum (in the
elastic region)pthen gradually drops to zero (in the plastic region). The experi-
meuts demonstrated the inadequacy of theoretical solutions, especially in the

ABSTRACT: Describes the results of an investigation into the influence of the
composition of the mixture and the cycle frequency on the combustion
process of the fuel in a chamber with separate introduction of the com-
ponents. Two independent investigative methods are applied:
1) The determination of the chamber pressure by means of a piezo-
electric indicator equipped with a cathode-ray tube;
2) The stroboscopic withdrawal of gases and the subsequent analysis
of their composition on a T N tester.
It is established that an increase in the excess coefficient from 1. 18
to 1.45 results in a slow-down of the combustion of the fuel, whereas

Abstract The Main Administration of Animal Husbandry of the Ministry of
Agriculture of the Ukrainian SSR'has directed all veterinary agencies
to use brucellosis allergen for eye test in combination with sero-
logical methods for the diagnosis'of brucellosis in cattle. Use of
allergen for eye test offers possibility for detecting latent cases
of brucellosia in cattle and to verify clinical ones. Agglutination
method is a specific method for the diagnosis of brucellosis in all
types of animals. Although complement-fixation method has given
excellent results in many cases where agglutination method failed,
its use is limited by the fact that it is too complicated.

ABSTRACT: The instrument was studied in connection with its installation in Nikolayevo
(before the War it was in Pulkovo). The microscope-micrometers. The study
of the periodic errors by Ridberg's method at temperatures ranging from
+170.1 to +200.0 has shown that they are not great and can be disregarded.
The eye-piece micrometer. The studied errors of the lead screw in right
ascension are easily represented by a parabola. The errors of the lead
screw in declination can be represented by three straight lines with dis-
continuity between them. The periodic errors of both screws were found to
be negligibly small. Errors of the circle. The bending of the circle is
eliminated if the angle is measured at two points in the cirale which differ

circle in a complex w~y, and in order to reduce the errors arising from this, It Is
desirable to carry out the measurements in direct and reverse directions. As a result
of the deviation of the circle from the plane, perpendicular to the rotation axis, three
types of errors arise in the readings of the circle: because of the non-perpendicularity
of the circle and the rotation axis, because of the change in distance of the microscopes
from the limb during its rotation, owing to the inclination of the microscopes. A spe3ial
method was developed in order to allow for the latter error, amounting to 0".06 for t1te
circle in question. The study of the degree graduation in circle "B" was carried out
according to the rosette method, during the winter of 1955 - 1956. The corrections of the
mean reading of the circle from 4 microscopes were obtained, with the mean error being
t 0" .05. Comparison with a -more detailed study of this circle carried out by Yelistratov,
at 101 intervals, in 1940, (see RZhAstr. 1953, Nr 2, 649) showed that between the two
results there is a systematic difference. Apparently, during the time the instrument was
stored in the war years, the system of its graduation changed. The study of the bending
was carried out by Bessel's method - through observations with the aid of horizontal
collimators. Alltogether, during October 1956 - JulY 1957, 138 determinations of the

bendings were carried out, with the mean error for one determination being �0" .13. In
order to eliminate the personal error (amounting up to 0".5) a reversible prism was used.
Examination has shown that the bending is temperature dependent and is, moreover, subject
