(Fig.2). The measurements showed that the activation potential is a linear
function of the concentration of hydrogen ionsp while the passivation poten-
tial and the potential of the beginning of repassivation are not subject to
such a functional dependency. The concentration of hydrogen ions has a
great effect on the critical passivation current. Steel composition and
sulfuric acid temperature have a great effect on the magnitudes of the pas-
sive and active ranges as well as on the critical passivation current. An
increase of the chromium content from 5 to 15% considerably widens the pas-
sive state range and decreases the active steel-dissolving range. Steel
containing 15% of chromium and 15c,4 of nickel is senrcely activated by sul-
furic acid over a wide potential range at 200C. Steel containing 19% of
chromium is not activated by sulfuric acid at temperatures of 40 to 600C.
Beginning at a temperature of 600C all the investigated steels are activa-
.ted by sulfuric acid. Even steels containing 23-27% of chromium and 23-2B%
of nickel are activated by sulfuric acid at temperatures above 800C. An
increase of the chromium and nickel contents decreases the value of the cri-
tical passivation current. For steel containing 5% of chromium and 23-28%
of nickel,the current value is 8-11 mA/cM2; for steel containing 9% of chro-

through the.heat exchanger of the pressure reducer valve. After having mixed
with the other flow it is directed into the heat-exchancer-liquifier, where '
it is partially liquified and the solid C02.particles washed out. Comparison
of the results obtained with the three above-mentioned systems led to the fol-
lowing conclusions: (1) If it is desired to simplify the design of the frac-
t1onatind column, variant (2) is recommended. (2) The specific enerGy con-
sumption in the increased-pressure cycle may reach an approximate value of
1.3 kwh/kG of liquid 02 [Abstracter's note: 1-3 kvt- ch/kG.zh.02 in the origi-
nal] when the compression,pressure is 14 At. in a turbocompressor with an
isothermic efficiency of 0.6 aiid the air expands in two turbo-pressure-re-
ducer-valves with adiabatic efficiencies of 0.8 and 0.78. (3) A second tur-
bo-pressure-reducer'-valve w 'ith partial expansion is advisable for pressures
from 8-9 At..and above. At.a pressure of-.12.5 #t. a se 'cond turbo-pressure-
7educer-valve decreases the endrgy consumption by approximately T"o. For this
reason variant (3) 'is recommended. The coeffibient of oxygen extraction for

however, the corrosionand electrochemical behavior of stainless steels'of the
OKh23N28M3D3T type in boiling H2SO4 solutions of relatively high concentrations
(>20%) has not previously been investigated, the authors studied this question with
the ob'ect of exploring the ways and means of inhibiting corrosion under such condi-
tions. Specimens of these steels, with varying proportions of Cr and Ni, were sub-

jected to corrosion tests in glass flasks with reflux condensers following water
quenching of the specimens from 1100%. There was 10 cc of the solution per cm2 Of

urface area of the specimens. The solution was replaced once every 10 hr of tests#
The corrosion resistance of the steels was investigated over a broad range of
-potentials with the aid of an elect-conic potentioetat. Findings: in boiling HZS04
solutions the corrosion rate of OKh23N28M3D3T steel is relatively high and increases
with increasing concentration of the acid (3ig. 1). For 40-507.kS04 the corrosion
rate of this steel does not exceed 2-3 g/(m -hr). For H2SO4 in concentrations
exceeding 457. the corrosion rate sharply rises, reaching a maximum 1-100-130
gj(m2-hr)1 for the concentration of 60-707., whereupon it somewhat decreases. In
comparison, OKhl9N28M3D3T steel with its lower Cr content', displays a somewhat
higher corrosion, i"f stance t an OWMUM3WT, steel (Fig.1).The standard hydrogen'
scale potential of 002~NUM30T steel in boiling H2SO4-solutions
exists in the potential range characteristic of active state. Hence ensue the
possible methods of protecting it against corrosion under these conditions. Clearly,
the corrosion resistance of this steel can be increased by alloying it with elements.

content, and reducing its Cr content (to not more than 19-20%). But this can also Z,

A clinical analysis of 103 cases in Szczecin during the last quarter of 1952 and tile
first quarter of 1953. Thirty-nine cases out of them were characterize(I by ex-
tremely similar clinical pictures, although there were differences in tile severity
of the course, which seemed to suggest the possibility of *a common actiologic fa;;-
tor. Fourteen cases proved fatal; in 18 cases after the course of this disease blind-
ness or deafness, paresis, menial disorders (dementia) or disturbances in the rne-
tabolic system (axis hypophysi.9-hypothalitmus) were noted. The appearance of the
epileptic syndrome has also been noted. The accurate number of cases in which late
sequelae of the course of encephalitis appeared could not be stated because of their

The introduction to the treatment of scleroderma appearing in the courfle of acute
diarrhocal states, besides the nntibiotics, lipotropic and circulatory drugs, blood
or plamna transfusions. of big doses of cr-tocopherol (3 times daily 30mg.) brings
about distinctly positive results. This is manifested by a consideraWe decrease of
the mortality rate. The improvement of the general condition and disappearance of
scleroderma lesions are observed in a majority of cases even during the second
24hr. of vit. E administration. The therapeutical action of a-tocoplierol can be ex-
plained by its beneficient influence on the carbohydrate and lipoid metabolism, on
the compensation of disorders in the oxido-reducing reactions, and perhaps also on

Investigations In 92 infants showed that these conditions cause hypoacidity of the
gastric juices and lowering of the secretory function of the pancreas which consti-
tutes one of the causes of the difficulties encountered in quick re-alimentation. The

administration In these cases of hydrochloric acid with pepsin and pancreatin has
a most important influence on the raising of tolerance to high caloric diet of the
high protein type. Normal feedings could be given after 3 to 5 days to infants who
received pancreatin but in the control group on the 6th to 8th day. The improve-
ment of high caloric diet tolerance in infants receiving pancreatin proved to be dis-
tinctly favourable both to the general state of health and to the increase in weight.
This allowed considerable shortening of the period of hospitalization (from 20-25
days to 10-14 days). The complete normalization of external secretion of the pan-
creas was noted already in the 4th week in the group of infants receiving pancrea-
tin and in the 6th or 7th week in the control group.

Abstract In children who suffered acute alimentary dystrophy, the
absorption of vitamin A oil solutions in the gastro-intes-
tinal tract was considerably lowered, which the authors
connect with an insufficient content of enzymes in it) in
