ABSTRACT; The article analyzes the motion of a ballistic missile moving in the atmo-
sphere. It is assumed that there Is friction due to the motion of the missile through the
atmosphere, and that this force is directly proportional to the speed of the missile pro-
jected on a plane parall9l to the direction of the gravitational force. With the help of
formulas developed in the article, the horizontal distance of the flight can be calculated.
Next, the conditions which assure a maximum flight distance are stated in the form of
partial differential equations. The general equations are applied'to the cases where the
thrust of the rocket is constant and where the,r6cket moveg with constant acceleration.
i The method used to arrive at the optimum direction of finmsf (optimality in the. sense of- - I

maximum range) is due to D. lauden. The results of the paper show that the optimal
conditions of thrust direction in the case of constant acceleration is for the thrust to be
constant, as is the case with a ballistic missile moving in a vacuum. The article is a

Then, conditioned food or defensive conditioned
reflexes (CR) were formed on the stronger of
the pair of IS. in the control tests, weak IS
also caused CR. During simultaneous presentation
of IS in preliminary tests a temporary connection
between them did not nppear, which the author ex-
plains by the rapid appearance in this case of an
additional focus of the complex stirnilation, and by
unfavorable conditions for the interaction between
the 2oci of the couponents.

TITLE: Radlosensitivity and course of radiation sickness in rodents of various species on
irradiation with the doses LD50/30 and LD100/30
SOURCE: AN GruzSSR. Soobshchonlya, v. 44, no. 3, 1966, 749-756
TOPIC TAGS: x radiation, radiation sickness, rodent, leukopenia
ABSTRACT: So far not many studies have integrally dealt with the survival rate and state of
various tissues and organs of irradiated animals as well as with the period of occurrence and
course of radiation sickness and its features as a function of the radiation dose. AccoixUgly,
the authors undertook an integral study of all these questions'with respect to various species
of the rodent family in order to clarify whether the changes in weight and peripheral blood
depend on the radiation dose and are related to the survivability of the animals and whether
there exist differences in the composition of the peripheral blood of the surviving and felled

animals. The experiments were performed on mice, guinea pigs and rabbits, exposed to
x-irradiation (20 kw, 15 ma, 0. 5 Cu filter, focal length 20-40 cm, dose rate 28-55 r/min).
Changes in weight and peripheral blood of all the experimental animals were traced before and
after irradiation at intervals of 24, 48 and 72 hr and on the 5th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 15th, 20th , 25thl
30th, 40th, 60th and 9M days. Those animals which died were dissected. Findings: as the
dose is increased from LD 50/30 to LD 100/30 the lifespan of the rodents (mice, guinea pigs,
rab bits) decreases and their general mortality increases. Animals of one and the same species
but with different original (pre- irradiation) weight showed a roughly identical rate of weight
loss when irradiated with an identical dose. The survivability of rodents is unrelated to original
weight and is related only to the rate and extent of weight loss following irradiation. As the
dose Is increased from LD50/30 to. LD 100/30 the decrease in the leukocyte count of the periphe-
ral blood of all the rodent species investigated sets in rapidly so that ultimately this count
dwindles to 4-2% of Its original value-per cc of blood. The pattern of variation in the erythro-
cyte and leukocyte counts at the onset of radiation sickness is the same for the survivors and
for the dead rodents. A difference in this pattern becomes appreciable only at the climax (se-
cond stage) of radiation sickndsa: on the IOLh-14th day in mice, on the 8th-l0th day in guinea
pigs, and on the 15th day in rabbits, It may be assumed that the survivability of rodents Is most

greatly affected by the degree of-original anemia. Following irradiation with the dose LJ) 100/30
the hemorrhagic syndrome is more distinct in guinea pigs than in mice and rabbits. The de-
termination of the radiosensitivity of animals requires the concomitant Investigation of several
systems of the organism. Orig. art. has: 3 figures, 2 tables.

TEXT: A large number of papers have already dealt with gamma-dosimetry,
and several methods have baen developed for neutron-dosimetry (also Wly
a gamma background of 10 to 15%)'i If the absorbed doses D7 and Dn are
nearly equal, the methods of photographic emulsion and the chemical methods
are too Inaccurate. Homogeneous, thimble ionization chambers (Refs. 7, 8)
appear to be the most useful. In the present paperv the authors give re-
sults obtained when determining the absorbed doses in biological objeoteg
obtained by the last-mentioned method. In this method, the neutron and
gamma components are separated by using two chambers having different
hydrogen contents in their.walle. From the difference between the effectsit
is possible to determine the ratio of the components. It is of importance

the third was made-from a special plastic material of the type "Aerion"
(Ref. 12), filled with an ethylene-CO 2 mixture (1:1.25). The hydrogen LK
content in the filling gas mixtnre was the same as in Aerion, the oxygen
and carbon contents varied, which, howeverp did not essentially disturb
the homogeneous behavior of the chamber. The conducting layer of the
polyethylene chamber consisted of a semi-permeable aluminum foil
(0.01 mglom2) which had been sputtered in vacuo. The volumes of the three
chambers were 2.12, 2.26, and 2.59 0m 3. The experiments were carried out
on one of the horizontal holes of the WPT(IRT) reactor. A system of boron
carbide and bismuth filters (150 mm thick) was used to reduce the gamma
