AN SSSR, 1957) 112, No 5, 937-96o Abstract : Based on plankton collections conducted on the first voya- ge of the "0b" from February 29 to June 3, 1956, it was established that for this period the zone richest in phy- toplankton (2.6 g/0) lies directly near the shores of Antarctica; zooplankton develops most abundantly in the zone between the northern border of the floating ice belt and 63-640 south. lat. The average plankton biomass in this zone of the Antarctic in the period of biological sum- mer (0-317 g/0) is close to (a little lower) the plankton Card 1/2 Zooler ,gilchesl-V institut, 1nstitut okeanologii Akademii naull SSSR. Captained by I.A. Man, she sailed from Kaliningrad on 2'1" Sep- tember 1957 with a cargo of supplies essential to the expedition. Her deck-cargo included aircraft and snow-tractors. On her southbound course the "Ob" negotiated the Kiel Canal and sailed through the Bal- tic, the North Sea, the Mediterranean (putting in at Genoa).and along the Atlantic coast of Africa where she mst the brawler "Kazan"' on 20 October. She reach-. ed 60 South on 16 November, whereafter her progress Card 1/4 was impeded by heavy ice. It took 2 more days to SOV/26-60-1-13/45 Around the World Aboard the "Ob"' reach the Antarctic land-floe at a point 30 km from the Sovetskaya observatoriya Mirnyy (Soviet Observa- tory Virnyy") and 3 to drive a path 2-2,5 km inland. Supplies were unloaded and delivered to the observa- tory by tractor. The "Ob"' sailed again on 10 Ja- nuary 1958 after a rendezvous with the motor vessel "Kooperatsiyall which arrived to relieve those who had wintered at Mirnyy. Course was set for New Zea- land and, while the ship coasted the Antarctic shore, work on cartography, geology and marine biology was carried out, frequently in bad weather. The aircraft were used extensively. Specimens of plankton, ben- thos and fish were collected at every available oppor- tunity during the 24-hour watch. In order to depict the conditions encountered and the work performed, the author gives a brief journal extract. The "0b"' reached Wellington, New Zealand, on 18 February and, Card 2/4 after a short stay, set sail for Australia. She SOV/26-60-1-13/45 Around the World Aboard the "0b" arrived at Adelaide on 4 March for a second rendez- vous with the "Kooperatsiyall. The next port of call was Easter Island, which the "Ob" reached on 7 May. After a one day stay she set course for South Ameri- ca where she visited Valparaiso and Buenos Aires. Circumnavigation of the earth was achieved by passing Cape Finisterre on 26 July and tiie "0b"' ended her voyage in the port of Leningrad on 2 August. Soon after, a conference on the marine fauna of the Ant- arctic was held at the Leningrad Zoological Insti- tute of the AS USSR to discuss the preliminary re- sults of the Sovetskaya Antarkticheskaya ekspeditsiya (Soviet Antartic Expedition). Work performed by the "0b"' yielded data on the quantitative distribution of fauna at-di;ferent latitudes, At water tempera- tures of 25 28 plankton was found to be extremely Card 3/4 abundant in pteropod molluscs and si-phonophores in- SOV/26-60-1-13/45 Around the World Aboard the "0b"' cluding the genus Physalia and Pyrosoma. The number of different types of plankton decreases progressive- ly in the more southerly latitudes. The results of the Antarctic expedition are to furnish material for monographs on the types of fauna encountered and will enable marine zoologists to extend their stu- dies. The author concludes by stressing the necessi- ty of analyzing on a comparative basis. There are 5 photographs and 6 references, of which 1 is Maori, 1 Scandinavian and 4 Soviet. Minsk, AN BSSR, 1960, 95-1M TEXT: It is pointed out that the phase of oscillations of a micro- wave pulse oscillator varies from pulse to pulse in a random manner. Such oscillators usually operate with very short pulses, of the or- der of 1 psec, or less. In order to control the phase of oscilla- tions, it is sufficient (in most cases) to control the initial phase in each pulse. With this purpose in mind, harmonic oscillation *s .--from an external source are introduced into the oscillating system. Card 1/2 S/194/62/000/003/062/066 Study of the phasing ... D271/D301 Phasing processes of oscillations in a microwave pulse oscillator are investigated. Approximation of nonlinear characteristic by a polynomial of the 3rd order, with a reduced number of terms, is used in the theoretical analysis. Processes of oscillation build-up were considered in an equivalent circuit of the oscillator which repre-_ sc!nted an oscillating system with lumped constants, with one or se I vi-ttl degrees of freedom. Equivalent circuit of a loaded magnetron I'S i,. i.rIven. Laws of oscillation phase establishment and the influence o'L phasing on the oscillator stability, with varying load, are in- vestioated. 13 references. /-Abstracter's note: Complete transla- tion.
