TITLE: A New Method of Automatic Frequency Tuning

TEXT: In order to attain a constant frequency in quartz generators, the
authors of the papers of Refs. 1 and 2 suggested to use bridges for auto-
matic tuning. The idea behind the new method described in the present ar-
ticle is the use of the signal produced by a frequency change in the bridge
after a corresponding amplification has been made for charging a capacitor
'which prevents frequency drifts. The installation of this tuning bridge
and the mode of operation of the whole circuit are diagrammatically re-
presented in Figs. 1 and 2 and described. For amplifying the signal pro-
duced in the bridge it is necessary to use an amplifier whose input and
output are transformers. Fig. 3 shows a circuit in which a reactance tri-
ode is connected in parallel to the generator triodeo This reactance tri-
ode is used to amplify the signal produced in the bridge. Otherwise'. the
circuit diagram is the same as the one shown in Pig. 2. Next, the authors

of capacitor C 1 changes. This is attained by using the circuit diagram
shown in Fig. 3. Formula (5) is derived for the coefficient of stdbiliza-
tion. An experimental test of this circuit showed that it was not possible
to attain a coefficient of frequency stabilization of more than 10, since
otherwise a self-excitation of the circuit occurred. Parasitic oscillations
were prevented by the use of quartz filters and amplifiers with an ampli-
fication factor of about 50, and the influence of the supply conditions
could be reduced. Under these conditions, and using a quartz generator
with a resonator of a q-factor of io7, it vas possible to attain a relative
frequency change of 3-10-11 by changing the supply voltage by 10%. The
method suggested in the present article is suited not only for raising the
frequency stability but also for the forced synchronization of the frequen-
cy of generators to a staiidard frequency. This kind of synchronization in
which a signal corresponding to the difference betieen the standard and
generator frequencies is used for the control regulation of thc generator
frequency, is briefly described. There are 3 figures and 3 references:

A Determination of the Frequency of a Molecular Generator and of
the Irregularities in the Earth's Rotation
Time Service and the All-Union Scientific Research
Institute for Physicotechnical and Radiotechnical
Measurements who publish monthly corrections to these
clocks in the bulletin "Standard Timelt Mor A over,
daily time signals transmitted by the 6Z-10 Station
(England) are also used in the determination of these
corrections. These are further corrected in accordance
with the data supplied by the Greenwich Observator ty.
The frequency of the generator in the~,IKKh clocks Vwas
daily compared with the frequency of
generator. A preliminary value for the frequency of
the molecular generator, based on the data supplied by
the time services of the Soviet Union and Great Britain,
is now reported to be 23 870 129.395 kc/s + 0.012 kc/s.
Data on the irregularities in the Earth's i7otation in
1958 were obtained from the determination of the

systems of time. It was found that the amplitude and
phase of seasonal irregularities in the Earth's
rotation during 1958 were practically the same as those
in 1955-1956. The latter were obtained with the aid of
the cae'sium standard. It is argued that the results
obtained show that irregularities in the Earth's
rotation can be determined with the aid of the molecular
generator to the same accuracy as with the caesium
standard.

TEXT: The authors report on determining the irregularity in the
Earth's rate of rotation by means of a molecular oscillator used
from February, 1958, in the Sluzhba vremeni i chastoty Kbarlkovs-
kogo gosudarstvennogo instituta mer i izmeritellnykh priborov
(Time and Frequency Service of the Khar1kov State Institute of Mea-
sures and Measuring Instruments). The magnitudes of irregular and
seasonal changes in the length of the day were found and correc-
tions were derived for conversion of UT-1 (astronomical time) into

broadcast by Soviet and British services were averaged out and
checked against utomic time, Fig. 1 gives the differences between
the length of day in UT-1 and atomic time; these differences are
plotted as the ordinate (in milliseconds) against the period of
measurements (March, 1958 - March, 1959). The negative sign of the
difference represents increase in the rate of rotation of the earth.
The continuous curve (a) represents the total difference. The bro-
ken curve (d) gives the periodic difference. obtained by subtract-
ing from the total difference a quantity representing systematic
change of the earth's rotation. The systematic change was assumed
to be proportional to time: 0.00 msec in March, 1958, rising uni-
form!Y to 0.54 msec in March, 1959. The following equation was ob-
tained for corrections (S, in msec) necessary for converting UT-1
into UT-2 during March, 1958 - March, 1959: S(mol) = 31.0 sin (j -
- 25.8) + 4.0 sin2(j + 64.7), where j represents days in radians,
counting from 0.1.1958. A similar result was obtained at, the Vseso-

Abstract: Recrystallization is due to the very nature of hydrated parts
their tendency to pass from nonstable to a stable state. This can
have unpleasant results. Change in color of concrete (from grey to
dark chocolate) is the result of hydration of alumoferrite during
which takes place its decomposition and precipitation of Fe203 which
causes the dark coloration. Moreover on hydration of alumoferrite
there are formed octahedric aluminates which constitute nuclei of
further recrystallization of unstable hexagonal aluminates.

ABSTRACT: This is the second part of a paper in which the behavior
of fly ash in concrete is described. The chemical re-
actions between fly ash and hydrated lime in concrete
are explained, and the characteristics of concretes
prepared with fly ash discussed, i.e. the effect of fly
ash on concrete strength, water-tightness, resistance
to weathering, frost and corrosion by water, as well
as the phenomenon of shrinkage, generation of heat by
hydration, and resistance to caustic action. In conclu-
sion the author notes that an obvious improvement in
the quality of concrete can be achieved by replacing

Thirty-three pregnant women were treated from 7-14 weeks with 'largactil' ad-
ministered orally in increasing doses, using 150-250 mg. for one treatment. In 29
cases complete recovery or considerable improvement was obtained, and only 4
cases remained unchanged. No negative influence on the course of pregnancy was
