be made visible in depth by removing successive layers by
polishing and etching. The growth structure, twinning and the
dislocation struciure which arise under concentrated loading, and V.
the motion of dislocations in the 0001 1~lane in the [loio] Z

in the cell walls of an internal honeycomb structure was
demonstrated. Dislocations with Burger's vectors of the type

Abstract: Owing to their biological activity, neutral organic
materials, humus and low-lying peat, like acids,
upon mixing with phosphorite meal, are capable of
transfering their phosphoric acid into a me-bile
form.

ABSTRACT: The effect of the structure of fuel aromatic hydrocarbons (AM) on the
thermal stability (TS) of the fuels was studied with various boiling point fractions
of Romashkino crudes, catalytically cracked gas oil, and Baku T-5 jet fuel. The
AH were divided$accordini to their refractive index, into three groups which approxi-
mately corresponded to mono-, di-, and polycyclic compounds. These groups were
defined as light, medium,,and heavy AH, respectively. The TS of individual fractions
was eatimatea from the amount of deposit and gums formed at 200C after sparging
air through a fuel layer for 3 hr at 3 l/hr. The results given for Baku T-5 fuel
in Table 1 indicate that organoelemental (especially sulfur) compounds lower,TS*
and that the structure of AH strongly affects TS. The TS of AH groups and individual
AH was studied in mixtures of 5, 15, and 25% AH with a paraffin-naphthene fraction
which proved to be thermally stabl4Xunder the conditions of the experiments. It

JABSTRACT: A study has been made of the effect of normal alkanes, isoalkanes, and
naphthenes on the thermal-oxidative stability of jet fuels. Paraffin-naphthene
fracticns isolated by silica gel adsorption from various straight-run and secondary
treatment petroleum fractions and synthetic naphthene and isoalkane fractlons
~boiling close to the boiling range of jet fuels were used. The aromatic constituent
was bicyclic aromatic hydrocarbons isolated by-adsorption from the 250-330C
fraction of hydrofined green oil. Thermal-oxidative stability measurement8 were
carried out at 200C for 3 hr with air sparging through the sample at the rate of
3Z/hr, using equipment and procedure described earlier. The thermal stability
criterion was the amount of sediments and gums (Ing/100 ml fuel) formed. It was
found that none of the nonaromatic constituents form sediments in the neat state.
Addition to the nonaromatic constituents of 15% aromatics, however, sharply lowered

their thermal stability.''The structure of the nonaromatic constituent had a
substantial effect on sediment formation: a mixture of 15% aromatics with iso-
alkanes formed almost twice as much sediment as a mixture with naphthenes. This
effect was attributed to the influence of structure on'the degree of coagulation
of the oxidation products. To test this hypothesis, experiments were carried out
involving vacuum stripping of the mixtures, treatment of the residue with
isopentane, and drying to constant weight of the resulting precipitate. It was
found that regardless of the nonaromatic-hydrocarbon constituent in the mixture,
the amount of precipitate was the same. This was attributed to the gums and q
sediments being oxidation products.of.the aromatic hydrocarbons with the non-
aromatics acting as-a medium. This explanation was confirmed in experiments
involving oxidation of 1/1 mixture's of twononaromatic constituents with or without
15% aromatics added. It was shown that1ike the neat nonaromatic hydrocarbons,
the two-constituent nonaromatic mixtureji.fprmedvirtuall~ no sediments* Sediment
values for the two-constituent nonaromitic mixtures with 15% aromatics'obeyed the..
principle of additivity., Orig. art.. haA: 1 table.

A study was made of the cardiac glycogen in hypervitaminosis Bl in normal rabbits and
in rabbits with tachycardia following administration of adrenaline and caffeine.
Glycogen was determined idth Pfluger's method and the glucose idth hagedorn and Jensen's
method. Vitamin Bi given in injections to the rabbit ultimately caused an increased in
the cardiac glycogen. The vitamin seemed to prevent the Wininution of cardiac glyco-gen
caused by adrenaline or caffeine. When given by injection it caused an increase in the
weight of the heart but had no influence on the variations in the weicht of the heart
produced by adrenaline. Hatiu - Bucharest

In the last 6 yr., a clinical and pneumographical study has been made of 54 pa-
tients. In 1950-1953, classical treatment gave a mortality of 70.51,16, in 1954 the
mortality was 33.356 and in 1955 9.091j'o, as a result of change of treatment. Pneu-
mographical examination showed a change of the respiratory function. In the first
few (lays of illness intervals of inspiration were registered which were manifest-
ations of the increased excitability of the respiratory centres. The pneumograms
in the more advanced stages of the disease showed intervals of expiration, Mani-
festing either a state oi hypoexcitability of the respiratory centres or a state of
reduced reactivity of the endovascular chemoreceptors in the.carotid sinus. Chlo-
ral hydrate was entirely ousted by luminal. Administration of the latter Is much
more effective since it does not disturb the rhythm of periodical feeding of the
newborn, either artificial or with breast milk. Oxygen therapy, antipyretic treat-
ment, administration of antibiotics, serotherapy with maximal doses of 10.000
1 A. U., and permanent supervision and good care for the newborn made it possible
to reduce the mortality to low figures. L.. 71
