ABSTRACT: The main power plant on the "Poltava" diesel ship is equipped with a six-
cylinder 8300 hp 115 rpm internal combustion engine made by the "Burmeyster and
Vayn" company. The 155.73 m vessel has a beam of 20.6 m, a speed of 16 knots and
displaces 18,400 tons. Electric power for the vessel is supplied by a three-diesel
generator with a 300 hp diesel at. 500 11m and a 275 kva 400 v IMS 275-500'~Pt4~r WL~larP
The generators are equipped with an automatic voltage control system and are put
into paral3cl operation by the precision SY11L'111-011i'W'.nti011 method. The choxacteristier
of the principal mechanisms and systems in the ship are given. with experiMentra. data
on the degree of loading. Loading of the electrical system under all conditions is
given. The load on the electrical system is 2110-270 kw per day under sailing con-
ditions in the tropics, 180-220 kv per day during sailing in the temperate zone, 125
kw at anchor without loading operations and without air-conditioning, 155 1,W under

the same conditions with air-conditioning, 170-180 kw during loading, and an
average of 280 kw during docking operations. Tests under normal operating condi-
tions showed that electrical equipment made basically for 380 and 12.7 vac satisfies
present technical., Vequirements and that the complex and bulky UBKM I~atomatic voltage
reaulation system-does not assure proper power distribution between generators. 711.13
diesel generators.with a power of 300 kw apiece and one 200 kw generator must be
used in vessels of the "Poltava" type since the load on the electric power system
under way is 180-220 kw in the temperate zone and 240-270 kw in the tropics. Conse-
quently two diesel generators with a power of 200 kw apiece must operate under sail-
ing conditions at a load of 40-60% which means unstable generator operation and con-
stant duty for electricians which cannot be allowed on modern ships. Electric
equipment for cranes operates quite reliably on the whole. 4 illustrations, 3

ABSTRACT: The method recomendea consists in applying a coating of the
luminescence solution onto the apparatus to be investigated. When
the vacuum pump (suction of air) is connected the luminescence
solution penetrates into the interior of the vessel, where these
places may be determined by means of a quartz lamp or an ultra-
violet radiator. Coating with the luminescent solution can be
carried out on endangered points or also in parts. In order to
avoid possible "wrong signals" caused by an unforeseen deposit on
the interior walls of the vessel to be investigated, the applica-
tion of 11 lumogen-o range" is recomended which radiates a particu-
lar color, so that mistakes are excluded. Before coating the
vessel to be investigated with a luminescent solution its respec-

of grid openings and the total area of the cross section of the risers should be no

63, after a long and severe illness. In 1926, after graduating from the Leningrad
Electrical Engineering Institute im.-Ullyanov, deceased became director of a
substation within the Gorlkiy GRES. At the TsNIITMash,, the deceased worked out
the methods for computing the electric drive of presses, drop hammers and other
machine tools with percussion loads. The monograph on these methods has gained
wide professional recognition. Deceased trained several thousand engineers and
over 30 doctors and candidates of science. He authored over 50 scientific worksp
