Title : The Physico-Chemical Conditions and Zooplankton Present
in a Kolhoz Reservoir of the Omsk Oblast.
Orig Pub : Tr. Omskogo med. in-ta, 1956, No 19, 31-4o
Abst : Over a period of 2 years., a study was made of gas con-
tent, pH, oxidizability, hardness of water, nitrite
-nia content in a recently constructed reservoir in
the town of Gromoglasovka, with a view toward determi-
ning the suitability of the water for household anI fam
use. The study also bore on the qualitative and quantita-
tive aspects of the zooplankton population, and its seaso-
nal horizontal and vertical distribution. It was found
that the water in the reservoir was suitable for house-
hold and fam use. Bibliography of 21 titles.

TITLE: Contemporary an Early Glaciation in-Horthern'Darvata
and the Southern Slope of Patra'Pervogo Range (Sovremen-
noye i drevneys oledeneniye Severnogo Darvaz* I yuzhnogo
sklona-khrebta Petra I)
PERIODICAL: Uch. zap. Tadzh. un-ta, 1955, Vol 6, pp 13-34
ABSTRACT: Data compiled by the author Inlicate that 124 glaciers
with a total area of 666.51 km4 comprise the present
glaciation'in the basin of the Obi~-Khlngou River. After
analyzing this glacial complex and the composite glacier
level, the author has concluded that the glacier areas
are increasing from west to e 'ast, and that the g1sciers
on the northern slopes of the range are much larger than
those on the southern slopes. Glacial growth to the
east is related to the general increase of altitude in
Card 1/3 this direction, and with the region's structure, which

is morphologically favorable to heavy snow packing-; this can be
explained by the fact that the basin is closed in the east and
receives a large amount of precipitation which falls in the form of
.3now at any time of the year, The north6rn slopes of the range
contain valley glaciers, while the southern slopes carry perched
and firn snow masses. The asymmetrical nature of glaciation,
although related to slope exposure, is explained by variations in
the amount-of radfation. The absence of moraines shows that at this
time glaciers on the northern slopes are advancing. On the southern
slopes moraines are up to 1 kv, long, showing that the glaciers are
contracting. Thus the over-all glacial volume'remains fixed, and
this, in turn, makes it possible to consider%the water balance in
the rivers which-feed these glacibra as being constant. The presence
of troughs, usually'of a U-shaped form, of glacial polishing, of
traces of cutting along the slopes, and of ancient cirqaes, all
indicate that ancient glaciation existed here. The table, which shows
the hypsometric position of cirques makes it possible to estiablish
the similarity of the ancient-glaciation and the present one. The

ABSTRACT: The valley of the Khingou River which is one of the
Darent streams of the Vakhah.-Mmm, has f our sections.
.two-of these are subsequent (with fully-developed
forms), and two are insequent, (with features charac-
teristic of recent valleys). The upper conformable
section shows traces of intensive glacial activity.
The subsequent section at the headwaters and also the

Paleozoic rocks, and the midstream and downstream sections run
through Meso-cenozoic rocks. Basic f eaturge cof ~ths'Jilth- mountain
relief began to form during the upper Neogene. Studies of the Neb-
ene Polizakskaya svita (series) in the Yakhsuyskaya depressiya
depression) have established that movement of inaterial from the
f
northeast (from the headwaters of the Khingou River) was more im-
portant than movement from the south and the southeast. The wide
valley at the headwaters of the Khingou River has probably survived
frcm the upper Neogene period, when a water artery apparently formed
a northwestern border of the rising Darvaz Range. The author ex-
amines the old Quaternary deposits$ such as the Khingou moraines,
the JUMd2bl-Mirganskiye otlozheniya (deposits) and the Dashtakinskiye
konglomeraty (conglomerates), and notes that their positions lie at
gradually decreasing elevations: (3400 m to 3500 m; 3000 m; 2700 M)~
This phenomenon is caused by lowering the erosion level in the west,
which process was obviously in progress since the old Quaternary
period. The author also notes that clastic material in the deposits

becomes-more rounded toward the west. This shows that the upper
part of the river flowed in almost the same direction during the
old Quaternary time as it did during the upper INeogene. II. is possi-
ble that an analogous subsequent valley existed at that t4:de and
that it was made up of the valleys of the Ragnou River and
the second longitudinal section of the Khingou River. This valley
lay northeast of the Neogene valley and apparently ran toward the
modern interstream area of the Obimazor and Shuj*bbdjv!~&_,
'Rivers , where a broad alluvium-filled ravine has been preserved.
The transverse sections were undoubtedly produced by the development
of lateral tributaries in the ancient subsequent valleys. This
development was caused by the process of stream-capturing in the
period of intensive lifting and of related deep erosion. At that
time the pattern of hydrographic network was the same as it is now.
A new stage of uplift caused renewed incision of the valleys in the
basin to the deptbL of approximately 50 m. This is proved by the
Presence of an dncient deeply incised valley runing virtually the

The Evolution of the Khingou River (Cont.)
entire length of the Khingou, Yakhola, Ragnou and other rivers,
with the exception of the antecedent sections where block uplifting
has occurred. Dying down of tectonic activity and, possibly, a
reversal of the movement from the positive to the negative has caused
the valley to fill with alluvium up to the modern terraces which lie
at 70 m to 90 m (at 120 m in the lower part of the Khingou River).,
New uplifts, interspersed with periods of relative tectonic rest,
caused the formation of the lower terraces. These terraces are
accumulative in alluvium, and erosional in the zones of local up-
lifting or where epigenetic valleys were formed. The lower part of
the Khingou River became a tributary of the Surkhob River during the
lower Quaternary time as a result of capturing two degrading
streams. At the present time, strong shore erosion is destroying
ancient terraces and widening the flood-plain in the longitudinal
parts of the valley. In the transverse sections incision in depth
continues and tends to eliminate grade variations in the profile of
the rivers.-A bibliography of 13 t-J.tles is included.

satisfactory and cite expts conducted by Sinel Inikov and Zemlvanyy in the All-
Union Elec Eng Inst, in which slotting of the end rings reduced the efficiency of
the motors tested by 4.5-5% and the power factor by 17-19%, while increasing the
starting torque by only 5-36%. Molchanov gives examples of successful application of
Shturman's method.

Abstract The method of pipeless electric drilling is described,
as well as the electric drilling unit used in It. The
electric drilling unit lowered into the drilling hole
consists of an electric motor which moves the drilling
bit and of a centrifugal pump which circulates the
drilling fluid. The drilling fluid circulates only
locally around the drilling unit and the suspended
removed cuttings are deposited in the drilling unit, which,
therefore, must be lifted from the hole periodically and
cleaned of those cuttings. This method of drilling, as
compared with conventional rotary drill, has the advantages
of saving time in lowering the tools In the hole, lighter

derrick load, and less power for operation required.
Those advantages are especially prominent in greater
depth drillings. Therefore, it might be suggested to
divide the well drilling operation into two stages: the
first, shallow drilling to be done by conventional rotary
drilling, and the second, deep drilling, by pipeless
electric drilling. Diagrams, tables, charts.
