It is confessed that great difficulties arise when the :e'tla- logy of chronic psychoses based on infectious processes is to be determined. it would be preposterous to maintain that a microbe discovered In the blood of thew tient is the cause of the psychosis. The author attributes much greater value to Ik discovery of the indications of non-specif ic immunity in cases of chronic infectiao psychoses. Among these indications are mentioned: the phagocytic indication, W content of -y-globulins in the blood serum, and the titre of the complement. Then indications vary considerably when insulin or antibiotics are administered, Schi* phrenic psychoses require immunobiologic*l investigations. Title : Data on the characteristics of the immunogenic properties of pertus- sis endotoxin Periodical : Zhur. mikro. epid. i immun. 10, 78-82, Oct 1955 Abstract : On the basis of experiments on white mice and rats it was determined that unpurified pertussis endotoxin possesses immunogenic properties both in its natural state and after deactivation vith 0.4 percent formalin. Combined immunization of rats with "boiled" [inactivated by boiling] vaccine and unpurified endotoxin affords the animals stable immunity against parenterally administered live pertussis cultures or enclotoxin, even when the dose is several times the normal LD50- Neither the boiled vaccine nor the endotoxin, anapreparation, has this effect when used alone. Combined immunization of mice pro- tected them against,air-borne infection with H. pertussis. The re- sults of the experimients are presented on two charts. Four Soviet references are cited. It was shown that live cultures of whooping cough bacilli of Phase I contain at least 6 antigens, whooping cough endotoxins 5-6 antigens, formalinized endotoxins, boiled vaccines and.crude hemag- glutinin -- 1+ antigens, agglutinogen - 2 antigens. Moscow-Leningrad, Izd-vo AN SSSR,'1955, PP. 18-26 ABSTRACT: This study is devoted to research on the relationship between the shape of the spectrum of a complex signal and its perception. Research data on a special case of this relation- ship are given: the depe6dance of changes in the perception of sound on changes in the relation between the intensity levels of its spectral components, recorded according to frequencies. Three types of complex sounds were used, differing from each other in the shape of their spectra: 1) a complex sound composed of two groups of harmonies of the same fundamental frequency; 2) a complex sound composed'of two pure tones; 3) a complex Card 1/2 112-2-4812 Distinguishing Complex Sound Signals. Report Nr 1. (Cont.) sound composed of two noise bands. The method and setup of the experiment are given. It was indicated that the law governing change in the character of responses to complex sounds when the relation between the intensity levels of its components is changing, is the same in cases where the shape of the spectrum of the i t rferences is different (noise bands, harmonic groups, or tones7-1; all cases when the intensity level of one of the sound components exceeds the intensity ldvel of another compo- nent by more than 20 db, the subject being tested identifies the whole complex sound as the stronger component in 100 per cent of the eased. It was indicated, that for uniform perception of com- plex sound, the relation between the loudness of its components must be maintained. A graph is given showing the dependance on the frequency of the complementary tone of the minimum level at which the complementary tone has significance for the perception of complex sound. The similarity between this curve and the mask- ing curve is noted. Differences between this curve and the mask- ing curve are examined in detail, and the reason for these dif- ferences are given. Moscow-Leningrad, IIzd-vo AN SSSR, 1955, pp. 27-33 ABSTRACT: The history of the pr6blem of cornplex tone perception is reviewed and several points of view are given (Fletcher, Shouten and others). The results are given of experiments which were carried out in two stages: 1) determination of those mini- mum fintensity) levels of complex sounds (high tone harmonies of 200 and 300 cps occurring in the 1500 to 3,000 cps frequency band) at which a differential tone is formed above the threshold; 2) the determination of the complex sound pitch. The intensity of the differential tone was determined by measuring the magni- tude of its masking effect. As a point of departure, it was as- sumed that high tones do not mask low tones. Consequently, the Ca rd 1112 0 112-2-4813 Distinguishing Complex Sound Signals. Report Nr 2 (Cont.) group of high harmonies use6 in the experiment would not of itself necessarily mask a tone of the same frequency as the fundamental frequency of these harmonies. If, indeed, this group of harmonies generated a differential tone, then this tone must mask & tona of the same frequency coming from outside. The great- er the intensity of the differential tone ,~the greater the mask- ing effect must be. Results of determining the magnitude of the masking effect of 200 and 200 cps tones by high harmonies of these frequencies are given. The differential tone was not de- tected below 40 db. For this reason the 30 db level was chosen. The complex sound pitch (the harmonic group) was determined by comparing it with a pure tone. The curves of response distribu- tion obtained from five subjects being tested showed that the frequenc? at which the pure tone evoked 50 per cent of the re- sponses Higher" Itonel (in-relation to the complex sound) co- incided very closely with the fundamental frequency of the har- monic group, deviating from it not more than 6 to 10 cps either way. The question of how the presence of a fundamental frequency in a complex sound affects the possibility of estimating the pitch [of the sound) was investigated. N-Ya-K. Card 2/2 CHISTOTICH, L.A. As a result, a time- reflex was produced, manifesting itself in turning the eyes towards the sound source for 1-2 minutes.before the introduction of SS and in increased sensitivity to SS. Subsequently the use of stimuli, stereotypically prece- ding SS or repeating SS at constant intervals leads to the formation of a stable orientation reflex) which heigh- tens the excitability of the sound analyser. Orig Pub : Fiziol- Zh- SSSR, 1956, 42, No 7, 572-560 Abst-ract : In test-subjects the hidden Period (HD) of the motor con- ditioned response (CR) (lifting of the finger) at the tone of 1000 "ge" lasts with verbal reinforcement (verbal-motor method) 0,2-1.2 seconds, and with electro-dermal reinfor- cement (defence method of A.G. Molotkov) 0.1-0.5 seconds. HD for close tones (700-2000 gc) with verbal reinforce- ment lasts 0.6-2.8 seconds, in defence - 0.15-1.0 seconds. The generalization is particularly distinct in sual-1 --Ux- gaitudes of HD (up to 0.25 seconds) towards a basic stimu- lus. In large HD (0-55 see- 1.0 see.) generalization may Card 1/3 - 132 - UM/Humn and Animal Physiology - Nervous System. R-12 Abs Jour Referat 22iur - Biologiya, No 16) 1957) 71190 be absent. With verbal reinforcewnts the differentiation is worked out rapidly and appears complete; with defence reinforcements, when a small ED is observed of a positive CR, the differentiation becomes difficult and my be easi- ly destroyed. In this way, the different CE worked out in verbal and defence reinforcements, may be determined by the difference in the base magaitude of HD. After wor- king out of CR through the complex: "light (0.3 sec.) plus sound (0-3 see.) the exclusion of the second compo- nent does not affect the defence reactions, as the latter arise before the inclusion of sound, but inhibits the re- actions, vhich were worked out with verbal reinforcement and which arise only after the addition of the second component of the complex. In this case the extinguishing of the CR and the production of differentiation is more rapidly achieved vith the verbal-motor then with the de- fence reflex.
