1ABSTRACT A study was made of the hydrolysis of starch
in 6 solution Of Hi02~at 370 in the presence
of Fe(P8903:(I)jq CU(F~a02)2 (II), as V-all as
of Il with the addition of-W2. It was shQi.,m
that II is more active than I and that Mn+;d
(I mg per 0.01 g of 11) promotes II. I-Phe speed
of hydrolysis of starch is proportional to the
concentration of H202 and inversely proportional
to the concentration of starch. The speed of

Abstract The ciliate -was grown in flasks (50 ml) on sterile filte-
red contents of the rumen; to 10 ml of medium 60 mg of
starch was added and 16 ng of dry sifted rumen contents.
The culture was saturated with C02 for 15 minutes to remo-
ve 021 closed with a rubber stopper and incubated at 38-
400. Reinoculations were conducted daily. The lar(,,est
number of ciliates were obtained on cultures of soya
starch (41,500 specimas per ml) and on barley starch
(40,500 specimens per ml). Corn starch does not produce
ciliate development.
