TITLE: Ca )ocyanine Dyes Containing the Benzimida-zole Ring
PERIODICAL: Chemicke" listy, 1961, No. 1, pp. 44-62
TEXT: A literature survey of carbocyanine colour
sensitizers is presented, with particular attention to products
containing the benzimidazole structure. The paper discusses
structural relationships determining optical and photographic
properties of the carbocyanines and lists the principal methods
of their preparation. Much of the material is condensed into
comparative tables:. (1) Carbocyanines containing the benzimid-
azole nucleus are compared with those where the heterocycle is
benzothiazole. Wave lengths of maximilm absorption and maximum
sensitization are quoted. The appreciable differences between
the two values in the benzimidazole series is demonstrated. (2)
Symmetrical carbocyanine dyes, containing different heterocycles
are tabulated, giving their wave lengths of maximuja absorption.
These increase in the following order:. Pyrrolenine, thiazoline,
benzoxazole, N-ethylbenzimidazole, benzothiazine-(1;3), thiazole,

benzthiazole, pyridine, benzselenazole, pyridine-(4), quinoline-
(2), quinoline-(4). Absorption maxima of the majority of
asymmetrical carbocyanines correspond approximately to the arith-
metical means of the maxima of the symmetrical dyes. Differences
occur, however, with compounds where the two heterocyclic rings
display great differences in their basicity. The absorption
maxima are shifted to shorter wave-lengths. (3) The relative
sensitizing effect of different heterocyclic rings is listed, in
comparison to an unsensitized emulsion. The effect increases in
the following order: Pyridine-2 ..... pyridine-(2), 3,3-dimethy-
lindolenine ..... 3.3-dimethylindolenine, 3,3-dimethylindolenine....
benzthiazole, benzselenazole .... benzselenazole, 30-dimethylindo-
lenine .... pyridine-(2)9 benzselenazole ..... benzthiazole,l-methyl-
benzimidazole .... 1-methylbenzimidazole, benzthiazole .... benzthia-
zole and 1-methylbenzimidazole ..... 3,3-dimethylindolenine. Plana-
rity is a characteristic of the sensitizing dyes. (4) Effect of
substituents in the 6,61 position of the heterocyclic ring on the
sen-8Ltization of symmetrical carbocyanines. Electron-donating

groups generally increase sensitization of compounds of hetero-
cycles of weak basicity. In the case of thia-or selenazoles,
these substituents have not a very pronounced effect and with the
strongly basic quinolinocarbocyanines, the sensitizing effect may
even be negative. (5) The effect of N-methyl and N-ethyl
substitution on some of the carbocyanine dyes is shown, indicating
a very complex relationship between sensitization and physico-
chemical characteristics. (6) Table showing effect of substit-
uents on wave lengths of maximum sensitization and, ran e of
sensitization in imidazo-selenazolo carbocyanines. (75 Table
showing effects in the imidazolo-benzthiazolo series. (8) Table
showing effect in the imidazolo-thiazolino series. (9) Table
showing effects in the imidazolo-indolino series. (10) Table
showing effects in the imidazolo-benzoxazolo series. (11) Table
showing the effects in the imidazolo-benzimidazolo series. Con.-
ventional preparative methods are reviewed. The author has
studied the dipheny1formamidine route for the preparation of the
as ymmetrical benzimidazolo-benzoxazolo-carbocyanines, using

absolute alcohol in presence of triethylamine, but reports very
poor yields. Similarly, attempts to prepare, by the same
procedure, benzimidazolo-benzselenazolo-carbocyanines were not
very successful., leading to the symmetrical com ound as by-product.

Preparing topographic map originals by the method of scribing on coated plates

TOPIC TAGS: cartography, conformal mapping,.photogrammetry
pantography . ,scribe coating method,
PURPOSE AND COVERAGE: The book describes a method of preparing map originals by
scribing on glass plates or plastics, as one of the most important achievements in
the field of cartographic technique. Two systems are distinguished in the scribing
method: negative and posifive.. The negative system consists in scribing the image
of the map in the negative form and then obtaining a diapositive by contact print-
ing. This system is used mainly for preparing the originals of topographic maps.
The positive system uses the method of coloring the scribed image with a speciaL
dye and then removing the scribing coat from substrate. This system is used for
preparin 'g land regulation maps and general geographic maps. The problem of letter-
ing is not sufficiently well solved. The simplest way is direct scribing by melms
of styles, stencils, and special instruments, working mainly on the pantographic
principle. However, the results obtained with these tools are not yet satisfactory
with regard to quality or to output. In Poland, the scribe coating process was

introduced in cartography for the first time in 1961. The book is intended for
surveyors, geographers, and especially for cartographers; it -may be used by stud
in the field of cartography.

The actions of these sympathivotonic an-.ines are discussed. The method of their
atiministration is described andthe complications and contra- indications to their
isse are mentioned. A personal series of 16 cases is reported. In 13 cases the
iminediate. results of treatment were satisfactory, and in 3 cases no improvement
was :)bserved. The best results are obtained in the cases of 'pure' peripheral
shock, without haemorrhage; good results in the operative shocks in major opera
timis associated with haemorrhage. The results in haemorrhagic shocks were
variable; sometimes % considerable improvement was observed after addition of
nm-adrenaline to the transfused blood. (IX, 5)

of skin necrosis of the lower extremity after intravenous
infusion of 16 mg of noradrenalin for 24 hours. Noradre-
nalin was given because of the severe haamorrhagic shock
in which large amounts of blood were of no effect. During
shock the conditions are very favorable for adrenalin in-

PERIODICAL: Szkko i ceramika, no. 3, 1962, 83-87
TEXT: The article is the first part of a report serial on a test made by f.,
the Katedra Ceramiki Szlachetnej (Chair of High Grade Ceramics) of the Akademia
Go'rniezo-Hutnicza (Mining and Metallurgical Academy) in Krak6w under a research
line which has continued since 1953 in cooperation with the radio ceramics Indus_
try. The objective was.to assess the properties of ceramics ground in a vibrat, 9,
mill whose efficiency far exceeds that of a conventional ball mill. The article
is an inlormative introduction into the theory of electric ceramics engineering
and, with due resort to references, explains the bearing of manufacturing tech

T EXT The article is the last part of a serial and describes tests and
results. Ceramic samples ifere prepared from a composition of 25.7% Scandinavian
feldspar, 25.0% indigenous quartz, 40% kaolin, 7.4/10 clay, and 1.9/10 barium car-
bonate. The raw material iras processed in four different ways: 1) conventional
method as used at the manufacturing plant; 2) both feldspar and quartz were
preliminarily prushed in a vibrating mill until 99% of the grains passed a gage
no. 0.063 sieve; 3) the quartz was preliminarily crushed and 4) the feldspar com-
ponent was so treated. The mixtures were separately wet-ground in a ball mill
and 2 kg samples taken from each after 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 hours of grindin&
respectively. Granulometric analysis of each fraction 'vras carried out on sieves
with a mesh density of 10,000 and 16,000 per cm.2. The total surface area per
