Abstract Raw sulfate turpentine (ST) was treated with sodium
h~pochlorite solution containing 12.5% of active chlo-
rine in order to destroy the dicagreable odor and to
prepare ST suitable for organic synthesis. The desagree-
able odor dissapears at such a treatment in the result
of' the oxidation of sulfite compounds and their conver-
sion int:) sulfons and sulfo acids. The ST properties
before purification: appearance - transparent fluid)

Abstract :The premise that soporifics affect only the higher
nervous centers is contradictory to the pr,mise
that all these preparations as a rule act equally
on all sections of the neuron. Danielopolu thinks
that 2 types of action by the drii,-,s and physical

affector mechanism." In order to clarify the me-
chanism. of the iction of soporifics the -iuthors
investigated the actions of chloral, chloralose,
paraldehyde, and luminal. Their influence on -;L-,he
action of the mediators-acetylcholine (1) nnd
hist,unine (II), and also of the ions of potas-
sium on the uterus of a vir-in guinea pig; on the
terminal section of the iliac of the sane animal;
on the strai,-,-ht muscle of a fror,-Is abdomen; on the
stimulation of the excretion of adrenalin (III)in
a dog induced by KC1 of 1; on the effect of ill
on the blood Dressure of animal; and on the in-
crease in the secretion of 111 induced by the irri-
tation of the splanchnik was investiGated. The
authors found that like the action of other drugs
the action of soporifics may be nonspecific !ind

Abstract specific. A nonspecific effect is known as,one
which affects the processes which are the results
of the modifications in the action of mediatois
caused by a given substance. 1 has shovm that lu-
minal has-a speiaific and a nonspecific effect on
the working organ, with the first predominant when
large doses-,; and the second predomin~Lt when small
doses are administered. The nonspecific action is
exhibited in a weakened reaction of the organs to
1, while the effect of 11 and potassium ions does
not change.The specific effect of large doses is
indicated by a primary paralysis of the cells in
which they are insensitive to 1, 11, potassium ions,
and even to barium chloride. Chloral, paraldehyde,
and chloralose while nonspecific in action inttnsify
the effect on 1 on the musculature. Their specific
action causes contractions, which is succeded by

Abstract by 4'second paralysis caused by exhaustion. In-
experiments on a dog luminal inhibited the action
of 1 (produced a frenatoral action); the greater
the dose the greater its inhibition. It was im-
possible to differentiate between this action and
its specific paralyzing action. Small doses of chlo-
ral, paraldehyde, and chloralose.as a :?esult of
their nonspec'-fic action intensify the effect, nf 1
on the nervous system; large doses depress it
(specific frenatoral effect). In some small ani-
mals chloralose may induce spasms. Luminal inter-
feres with the increase in the secretion of 111
by the myeloid substance of the suprernals induced
by 1 -and potassium ions. Chloral, paraldehyde, and
chloralose have no effect on the secretion of 111.

The conditioned and non-conditioned oculovascular reflex (downward followed by
upward movement of the plethysmographic curve following light compression of
tht~ eyeball) and the circulatory reflex to flexor contraction were studied in 25 pa-
tionts with peptic ulcers. The reflexes were found to be very wenk and sometimes
absent in these patients. This finding Is discussed in the light of Danielopolu's
theory of the vici(.us circle of reflexes. which thus appears to be confirmed for

Two patients were detected radiologic ally. On examinations carried out on the 9th
and the 10th day of the Illness, a process of interstitial pneun-,onia with an in-
crease of the hilar shadows, ramifications towards the periphery and foci of pa-
renchymatous condensation were observed in the first case, but on subsequent
examination only the appearance of evidently interstitial infiltration persisted. In
the second patient, who was examined on the 5th, 12th and 27th days of the illness,
the appearance of an atypical pneumonia was observed on the first radiological
examination. On the occasion of a third control, predominance of the interstitial
process with absence of signs of parenchymatous condensation was observed. This
pleads In favour of Weil and Silverstein's conception, according to which in lepto-
spiroais an oedematous or IvLemorrhagle alveolitis with a sudden onset and rapid
disappearance, but with prolonged persistence of the interstitial lesions may be
expected. Moreover, the radiological examinations disclosed pleural involvement.

Abstract :Analysis of the basic laws that apply to the radio-frequency magnetless
mass spectrometers built by Bennett (Bennett, W.H.,, Journal of Applied
Physics, 1950, 91, 143) and Redhead (Referat. Zh. Ifizika, 3.955, 4169)
shows a formal analogy between these two instrume=s and oj:tica.1 spec-
trometers with diffradtion gratings. The Redhead instrument is an
equidistant radio-frequency mass'spectrometer and -the equat.ions valid
for it can be derived from the equations of a simple optici:a grating.
The Bennett instrument is the'analogue of a spectrometer with a non-
equidistant grating. Comparison of the Fraunhoffer diffraction from
one and two slits with the operation of one and tvo stages of a

fraction angle and the frequency of the electric field of the stages,
and also between the wavelength of light and the velocity of the par-
ticles. The distancies between the grids of a radio frequeacy stage
correspond in the equation to a constant diffraction grating. This
serves as the starting point for further analogies, whichmake it pos-
sible to produce a multi-stage instrument, using the relationship for a
multi-slit grating.'
The difficulties caused by the variable grating parameter can be
eliminated by solving this problem graphically with the aid of a special-
ly constructed instrument. The principle of constimction of this in-
strument, which adds vectorially the amplitudes of thei en(!Wgy increments
in each of the stages, is given. This makes it possible to choose a com.-
bination of cyclic numbers, chosen by Bennett empiriceLuy, Photographs
