Title The Mechanism of Oxidation-Reduction Reactions.
The Detection of Small Quantities of Selenium
and Tellurium in the Presence of Arsenic
Oris Pub Farmaica (RPR) 1959, 7', No 2, 1355-141
Abstract On the basis of measurements of normal
oxidation-reduction potentials (Eo) of the
systems SeO?-2/Se and Te03 -2/Te, as a function
of the PH o the medium, conditions were deter-
mined which permit the detection of So and Te
present simultaneously In the solution as H~Se03
and fl2Te03. At pH--O, the rate of the SeOz-

reduction (Eo=0.7(;v) with SnGlP (Sn44/S,1+2
EO 0.3 volts) is lari3,o, and eiu=ental 'Se
separates as a rod-oremSe powder, while 7cO-,-?
(E0=0.305 volts) Is practically not reducod'by
SnC12 even when a large excess of SnC12 Is
present and the solution is heated. In an
alkaline medium (pH'_-14), the difference be-
tween EO values for S003- 2 and Te03_ 2 is small
('_ 0.1 volts), and both metals are reduced very
rapidly with SnCl,:) (E0=0.85 volts). In this
case, Te and Se separate as black powders;
however, So has a greyish-violet coloration
and represents the allotropic form which con-
tains OH-. Upon drying, So precipitate regains
the red-orange color, while the To precipitate
remains black. For the detection of So and Te,

one drop of the solution to be analyzed, one
drop of SnC12 solution In HU (5 6 SnC12 is
dissolved in 5 ml concentrated HU + 95 ml water;
PH -0.5), and after some time two drops of
2-N. NaCH are placed on the filter paper and
dried with warm air, at the same time observ-
Ing the color of the spot. The detection
limit Is 5 x 10-6 S of selenite or tellurite.
The presence of As+3 (also Sb) does not inter-
fere with tho detoctlon of Se and Te; Bi
interferes with the reaction in an alkaline
medium. For the detection of As in the
presence of Se and Te, it is recommended that
one use the Tananaev and Panamarev method
kafter precipitating So and Te with atomic -4).
