Abstract Forty-nine mice were injected with 0.05-0.1 ml of a sus-
pension of blood corpuscles from lyitients with chronic
rlaeumatism. Among all the animals several weeks or months
after the beginning of the txperiment there vas observed
increased mobility, thirst, and an increase in appetite;
then trophic changes in the integument developed and, fi-
nally, progressive anemia, emaciation (UP to 30% of the
initial values)o decrease in appetite and mobility,

Ixtresis of the extremities (especially the hind ones) and
e~Lema of the digits. The cycle of development of the di-
sease lasted 2 to 11 months. Dissection showed the tisp
sues to be anemic, agranulocytosis was present, and in
some of the animals there were found to be minute nodules
in the liver and spleen) enlargement ofthe liver, a chan-
ge in the shape of the kidneys, hypertrophy or partial
atrophy of the suprarenals and periarticular swelling in
the region of the symphysis. The changes were not detec-
ted in control experiments in which mice were injected
with an analagous suspension of blibod corpuscles heated to
80 degrees or-vith a suspeni3ion prepared from clinically
healthy individuals, or whea the controls were located in
the vicinity of the experimental animals. The view is ex-
pressed that the blood of patients with primgxy chronic
rheumatism contains a thermolabile pathogenic factor of an
undetermined nature vhich is associated with the blood cor-

Abstract : The article discusses one of the aspects of voltage
surges occuring during accident breaks in long-distance
transmission lines with series and transverse capacitors.
These breaks are associated with the appearance of low
frequency oscillations. The authors study the basic
characteristics of the resonance on the simplest cir-
cuits consisting of linear and non-linear inductance,
capacitance, and resistance, connected in series. The
influence of the degree of nonlinearity on the magnitude

of the critical resistance and on the location and
amplitude of subharmonic oscillations is investigated.
The properties of subharmonic resonance in a three-phase
scheme are also studied. The authors find that the
calculation of subharmonic oscillations in long-distance
transmission lines with series and transverse capacitors
may be done with small modifications with the calculating
forms obtained for schemes with concentrated data. They
present results obtained frorn a model of a line. Eleven
diagrams and oscillograms, 4 references (1952-1954)
(3 Soviet).

Methyl-.,d,,d-dicyanoethyldiethoxysilane is an extremely unstable
spontaneously resinified compound. When stored in darkness for a i
month in a medium of inert gas at!room temperature, the product was
S_
~';-_:'converted from a clear liquid, boiling point 145C (7MM), into a vi
cous black resin. The resinification of this compound is explained
;by the protonization of hydrogen, combined with the -I-carbon-'atom.
;The substitution of the free hydrogen atom in the electron donor
group should lead to the stabilization-of such a compound. As a re-
sult of synthesis from the diethyl eater of methylmalonic acid,
methyl-,d,.4-dicyanopropy3:diethoxysilane was obtained in which the
iinitial properties were unchanged over a prolonged period. At pres-
'ent, the conditions of,hydrolysis of methyl-,,9..,e-dicyanqpropyldi-
ethoxysilane and the composition of the hydrolyzate are being studied-!-
Hydrolysis in neutral and slightly alkaline mediums with an'exeess of!
water provides a vitreous product with*a softening point.of 125C.
Hydrolysis in acid medium leads to a breakdown-of the nitrile group.

Abstract: An inveatigation was made e the conditions of the formation of a
sharply outlined object (tungsten wire) on-a screen. The radiation
of the gloving background penetrates not only Into the shadow zone
of the object, but also reduces the glow of,,,.the background near the
edge of theiAhadow. In this manner., the apparent magnification of
the d1meiwioi6& of the object is due to the optical properties of
the screen., and not to edge effects-in the development. If the
wire diameter is arvall, the density under the object is imcreased,
thereby reducing the contrast of the image relative to the back-

Abstract: 'awTace element is ccmposed of a ccuponent directed normally to
the: surface of the screen and a courponent, passing from the
neighboring elements at om angle to the normal, The first cam-
ponent does not distort the image, while the second does. If
there is an image of the object on the screen., the brightness
of the background on the boundary of the object is reduced. In
the case of photographs of slitsi, the reduction in the dimensions
of the alit leads to a reduction in the contrast of the image
relative to the surrounding background.
An instrument was prepam--d for the determination of the resolving
poirer R of screens and R of magnifying screens of various types
were measured.

Abstract The operating conditions of X-ray apparatus in the crLitical region are ex-
aminecl for two methods used to regulate the voltage -- autotransformer and tap
changing in the prima y and secondary windings of the main transformer. It is
shown that in the autotransformer regulation method it is best to operate with
the tube current constant. Voltage regulation by tap changing in the -prim Y
winding permits fluctuation of the transformer impedazice over a wider range.
If secondary -tap changing Is used, it is advisable to operate the tube at con-
stant power. Changing the.line resistance with constant filament supply to the
tube leads only to a change in the current through the tube, leaving the ap-
paratus in the critical mode. Tests have shown that changing the line resfs-
tance from 25 to 156% in the case of the Rum-4 apparatus and from 54 to-141%
in the case of the URD-2.10-4K apparatus does not change the factory setting
of the apparatus, leading to a change-in the power.
