By direct estimation of pentove conteal in systems containing human erythrocytes
the *xistence of a new route of Ciucose utilitation has been confirmed. In contrast
tothe classic Embden-Mayerhof scheme there Is an oxidative decarboxylation of
glucose via pentoses. These processes ore erdianced by meth)Ierte blue and cys-
teine. In patients with cancer. with some exceptions in cancer of the lung. an
eWhanced pentulytic capacity of the erythrocytes has been found. D-Ribose is the
most readily metabolized pentose and is believed therefore to be the 'physiologicalo
intermediary in this decarboxylative Ctycotysis. The enhanced pentolytic capacity
of the erythrocyte Ls probably one of the metabolic disorders of cancer. The pre-
sent data. although suggestive. cannol be used for diaCnostic purposes.

'ibstract iWhen propqrly aerated erythrocytes (a) of a healthy
hizinn being were Incubated In glucose, the amount of
sodoheptulose (1) increased by 3.5 mg percont after a
3-hour incubation period. rn the presence of methylene
blue (11) it increased by 6 rig percent. rn patients with
cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, the increase
amounted to 4.2 and 10.2 mg percent, respectively. In
the cancer of the mrmry gland an increase of (I) is

cancer conformity of results was not achieved. In 2
cases of cancer of the thywid glarid and in 8 out of 9
cases of hemoblastoma,, the growth of (1) in an E suspen-
sion Increased, In bruin tumors the accretion of (1) is
within normal limits. E taken from patients with a hy-
perfunction of the suprarenal glands produced a large a-
mount of (I) in the presence of glucoso alone.. or in a
combination of glueoso with (II). The assumption is made
that in cancer of the gastrointestinal tract all feruenta
of the haxonmophosphatic pathways becone activatodp and
that a displacement of the glucose metabolism occurs
which produces a change of the Ibbden-Mayerhof pathway
by becorAng an oxidizing hoxommophosphatic one.

the rate of disappearance of this substance was measured. A decrease in concen-
tration of ribose-5 -phosphate was observed, but there was no significant differen-
ce between the various groups. During the incubation of ribose -5 -phosphate a net
increase of fructose was observed. The adrinalectomy and the done of cortisone
were metabolically active as measured oti liver glycogen content. It is suggested
to explain the difference in response of red blood cells and Un liver homogenatee
to adrenal corticoids, that (1) cellular integrtt:p may be needed for the demonstra-
tion of the hormonal affect. (2) different tissues may be charxelarized by a dif-
ferent metabolic response to bormones. (3) the effect of cortisone need not be
identical with that of ACTH.
