ABSTRACT: An experimental Investigation of heat exchange has been carried out

on a large-scale model of a channel with transegrae fins- In p~gag'JLM. Distribu-
tions of local heat-exchange coefficients over the top of the fin are obtained no a
function of geometric characteristics and the Reynolds number. The data obtained
are used for calculating the correction factors to tile efficiencv in consideration of
the nonuniformity of distribution of a over the height of the fin. An equation is

St.5 steel were summarized and appropriate deductions
made. The author notes that the TU 19-51 MES rules for
welded Joints Issued by the Ministry of Electric Power

done by the'MSOA-300 and MOA-500-welding machines (manu-
factured by the "Elektrik" plant in Leningrad). Three

TEM The authors are of the opinion that the most soonomicalmethod of butt
welding is the electric arc bath welding. In the case of horizontal butt
welding rods of grade CTn.5 (St.5) and Cm.3 (St.3) steel electric bath weld-
ing is 9-11 times more economical than welding with superposed bare as re-
gards metal consumption, and twice as economical in consumption of electrodes,j
power and labor. The same economy can be realized in the case of vertical
butt melding and in welding steel of 25 r2C(25G2S) grade. Electric arc bath
welding, being done by hand, requires to be improved by mechanization and
automation and to be adapted to field welding. This development work is not
being conducted. The latest regulations governing the technology of welding

reirforcement became effective on-January let, 1960, and contain only casual
remarks as to the desirability of giving preference to bath welding and some
inexact information. More erroneous information is contained in the article
by-k.Te. Brod3kiy and A.M. Pridman, which appeared in the No. 6, 1960, issue
of Beton in shelezobeton, stating that bath welding is not suitable for butt
welding of rods made from 36 x r 2 C (30XhG2S) steel, and theref ore recommending
the use of round superposed bars. The same indication is given in an offioi-
al directive approved by NIIZhB and TsNIISX, which prohibits electric aro
bath welding, no doubtT as a oonsequence of the findings of Brodekiy and
Fridman, which are based on a few unsuccessful experiments. This conclusion
is inadmissible in view of the importance of the question. It is to be re-
Jected because the experiments were performed with electrodes which by no
means correspond to the charaVeristics of steel 30KhG23i the tensile
strength of steel is 90 kg/an and that of the built-up metal only 55 kg/&m2.
Inspite of this difference in strength and of the fact that the welding was
not done in compliance with recommendations, the result was better than it
was to be expected under- a--,- -which- shows -that --the fAult-lies

not with the bath welding method. The authors contend that by selecting the
right kind of electrodes and complying with the recommendations which provide
for a steel grip backing when welding, perfectly satisfactory joints of equal
strength can be obtained with electric arc bath welding of rods made from
steel 30KhG23. The authors criticize the method proposed by Brodkin and Prid-
man, providing for the use of bare placed over the welding joint, which have
the same diameter as the rods and a length of 10 times the diameter of the
rodal they find that the extra cost of material involves unjustifiable waste.
The allthors conclude that electric arc bath welding with a steel strip back-
ing, - a method which has proved its full worth over a long period of time, -
has not received due attention and recognition in official directives and
technical literature. On the other hand there are numerous misrepresentations
and disregard of the merits of the bath welding method. In order to apply
this econo2ical and progressive method of welding reinfor6ement rods made
from 3GXhG2S steel it is necessary that development work and tests are con-
ducted to perfect the technology of bath welding. It is also necessary to'

The radiation was carried out lop to a density of 104 to 105 tracks
per cu2 . The examination was made by areas and along 'the track.
The average free path for all the processes, including scattering
by an angle greater than 200 was 68 t 5% of tb* geometric. The
principal contributions are mad* by processes of Inelastic scat-
tering and absorption with star formation.
The area Inspection method was used to trace 1,240 @tars. A
distribution was made,by the number of rays. Fifty cases of scat-
tering by 9 and 11 cases of scattering by D were found; the
elastic-scattering sections were respectively CH a 14 t 3.6
uIllibarn and OD a 13 1 5.5 willibarns. The scattering by D
In strongly anisotrople. A histogram is given for the differential
scattering of a--wesons by If in a center of gravity system. A
discrepancy Is noticed from the theoretical curv* for small scat-
tering angles.

The present Vork investigates this scattering by the method of thick-layer
photoplates. The plates which were saturated with lithium acetate were
irradiated on the synchrooyolotron of the Institute for Nuclear Problems of
the Academy of Balenoe in the USSR. The mean ;n rgy of positive &Ad negative
pion* determined in the plate* amounted to (2 5 ! 10) MeV and (300 + 15) NOT
respectively. At prosent 105 oases of elastic Kattering of negativ; mosons
and 149 oases of positive **@one wero found within range of the angles of from
10 to 1700, The corr ' Ions which were necessary for the estimation of the
integral cross Gootiollof elastic, scattering are mentioned. In consideration
of these corrections the following integral *rose sections are obtained:

of x+- and x- -mesons on deuterium carried out by means of
photographic plates are described. Very little Information
concerning these scattering experiments has hitherto been
published; all there is are the papers mentioned in
references I and 2 (meson enercies of 85 and 145 MOV).

TEXTt In the present papert the author publishes the results of a
numerical computation of the polarization tensor components of deuterons
elastically scattered by helium. Helium was used as analyzer because high
polarization values could'be expected for the resonance region of 6
deuteron: (1-07 Nev) corresponding to the single-particle level of Li
with J-3 and T-0, and because of interference between resonance, potential,
and Coulomb scatterings. The experimen 'ts and the phase-3hift analysis in
Ref. 3 form the basis of calculation of the polarization values. If the
coordinate system is properly chosen, the polarization of the deuteron beam
can be expressed by four mean valu&s of -the components of first- and
neeond-rank tensors, which are the components of the spin operators S.
