ABSTRACT: This depression lies between the KlyaAa and Oka rivers in the
center of the European U33R. A detailed description is given
of this area's geology, climate, population, agriculture,
natural resources, and the recent measures to develop and
exploit these resources (soil melioration, swamp drainage,
peat excavation, conversion of swamps into pastures or po-
tato fields, and improved husbandry). These points are de-
scribed in detail for each economic district of the area.
Specific figures are quoted. There are 7 photos and 2 So-
viet references.
