FEXT: The authors consider two relatively large pores close to one
another and calculate the possible distortions of the stress and diffusion
fields caused by their interaction, and assess the kinetics of the
processes accompanying the approach of their centers. This was
experimentally studied with macroscopic pores 10- 1 - 10-2cm diam in
artificial XaCl crystals grown by the Stokbarger method. Samples with
suitable, close, pores of equal size were selected and studied under the
microscope. The pores were healed by heating in an autoclave (argon
20-30 kg/cm 2, 700-7500C). The experimental results are plotted as
1/10 . f(d/d 0), where 1.L+2R is the distance between the pore centers and
d=2R, the pore diameter. The experimental values lie on the theoretical

ABSTRACT:, Experimental studies hgve been made to trace the'kinetics of healing

externally applied gas pressure under tphirorm compression. The observed kinetics
are explained by increased gas pressure in the voids as a consequence of decreased
volumo of the voids. Calculations have been made for the kinetics of healing
isolated voids within the framework of 110dqvist's scheme" (F. Odqvist, Acta
Polytechnica, 2, 125, 1953). By comparing experimental and computed kinetic
curves, the value of the elastic limit in a single crystal of NaC1 has been
determined for the region of pre-fusion temperatures. The value obtained,

Vertical Circle at Ukrainian ObsuNatory To Be Chocked
The vertical circle of the Main Astronomical Observatory of the Academy
of Sciences Ukrainian SSR will be used in the coming years for an absolute
determination of the declinations of fundamental stare of catalogues FK3
and FKS3 (detailed report on the instrument in article by G. Struve, Publi-
cations of the Berlin-Babelsberg University Observator , Vol 3, No 1, Berlin,
1919). This will necessitate a detailed investigation of the graduation
errors of the graduated circle) since such an investigation has never been
made.
This article discusses the choice of the most rational method for this
investigation, which will involve a considerable work. A comparison of the
corrections of the diameters expressed in degrees, obtained adcording to
the complete and the abridged Bruns methods, convincingly shows that the
abridged program will be sufficiently accurate and yet will reduced the number
of measurements and the amount of final data processing considerably.

TITLE: Special features of producing large-diameter X18H12M2T
(Kh18NIMT) steel tubes
PERIODICAL: Stal', no. 6, 1962, 532 - 535
TEXT: Khl8N13M2T steel tubes cannot be made with diameters larger than
219 mm owing to the high deformation resistance and low ductility of the steel
and because no tube blanks with larger diameter are availible in this gr;-,.de.
Therefore, a technology to produce large-diameter Kh1&112V11' steel tubes from
hollow tube blanks produced by centrifugal casting was established. The steel
for centrifugal castings was smelted in a medium-size basic arc furnace with
partial oxidation. To ensure the required mechanical properties, and reduce the
segregation of the alpha-phase and the amount of non-metallic inclusions, the ad-
ditions of Cr, Ni and Ti were within narrower limits than permitted by the stan-
dard, (Cr 16.0 - 16.8; Ni 12.o - 14.o; Ti 0.30 - 0.55). The billets were

produced in two sizes: 285 x 65 x 3,200 and 320 x 65 x 3,200 mm (after machining:
260'x 35 x 3,200 and 300 x 35 x 2,900 mm). The mechanical tests showed a
strength of 45 - 50 kg/MM2 and a relative elongation of 45 - 60,%. After heating
to 1.000 - 1,0500C and a holding time of I hour 15 min - I hou- 25 min and sub-
sequbnt air-cooling, the strength limit and yield point had not changed, relative
elongation increased slightly, relative contraction considerably. The tests on
rolling tubes from the centrifugal castings were carried out on a "350" auto-
matic mill, Two versions were applied. Three tube blanks, 245 x 45 x 2,900 mm
iA size, were rolled on two piercing stands, while in the other version 265 x
35 x 2,900 mm billets were rolled only on one piercing stand prior to the auto-
matic stand, (with mandrels, 236 mm in diameter in the first pass and 238 mm, in
the second). Better results were obtained with the second version: no cracRs
formed on the tube end, the surface was also improved and power consumption was
lower. Therefore, in the industrial-scale tests only the second version (using
one piercing stand) was applied. In these tests 273-mm diameter tubes were
produced from -260 x 35 x 2,900 mm billets and 325-mm diameter tubes from 300 x
35 x 2,900 mm billets (with a machining allowance of + 3 mm). About 25% of the
273 x 15 mm tubes had to be rejected owing to scaling. Macrostructural tests

showed that in the metal of the tube blanks rolled the alpha-phase content at-
tained index values of 3.5 - 11.0, due to the unfavourable chrome-to-ilfckel ratio.

r
value of rcduction of the tube wall on the piercing stand, when 265 x 35 mri, bil-
lets are processed into 273 x 20 mm tube blanks, should amount to 44.1,%. After
such a deformation it can be expected that the development of defects is checked.
The tests were carried out with the participation of V. A. Surzhikov, A. D. Kova-
leva, A. V. Tkachenko, N. S. Kirvalidze, D. V. Gladkikh, and A. T. Esaulov, En-
gineers, (Yuzhnotrubnyy zavod-Yuzhnotrubnyy Plant).' There are 6 figures.

ABSTRACT: Based on the assumption that s~mthetic inhibitors might be
effective in processes accompanied by changes in natural antioxidant
activity, the antioxidant aetivity changes of liver lipids were
,studied after single or repeated administration of free radical
reaction inhibitors to intact animals. Mice were injected intrapoyi-
,toneally with the inhibitors dissolved in water or a 10% Tween-80
solution* The natural antioxidants were extracted from the lipid

ABSTRACT: Antioxidative activity changes of liver lipids and

intact animals contain certain properties common to synthetic inhibitors

extracts of Ing8et mice were diluted with methyl cleats and gamme-

Abstract: Studv of the effect of addition of C&Hj, to HCOOH on strength
of mineral acids, by the method of potentiometric titration;
the experiments were carried out with a mixture of 10% HCOOH
and 90% C~Ho quinhydrone electrode used as indicator elec-
trode and a saturatid calomel electrode as the comparison elec-
trode. HC10,~, toluene sulfonic acid (I) and HaSOtvere titrated
at 700 with a solution of pyridine in CjHr,. In a mixture of
HCOOH and C(.H4 the change of potential from acid to alkaline
region is greater than in a medium of HGOOH (190 and 74 mv, re-
spectively, in the case of I). Amelioration of the conditions

ABSTRACT: Earlier controls of these preparations were conducted with inconveni~-
ent biological methods. A quantitative chemical method described in earlier
publications was applied to glycosides containing an aldehyde group at CIO, in
particular to cymarin, erysimin, semisynthetic and natural convallatoxin and
Corelborin II (UelleboM!s.glycoside). It consists in reacting the carbonyl group
with hydroxylaftdfie'HC1, !forming the corresponding oxime and binding the liberatT..

showed that the results agreed with data from biological analysis, but the results
obtained by chemical analysis were more reproducible and more exact. The
chemical analysis method is therefore recommended for both laboratory work an
analysis of standards. The semisynthetic convallatoxin was prepared by
